At 3am this morning I went live from my music room in London, as part of Stream Aid 2020. I played one of my most favourite songs - Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". Forgive me for the lyric mishaps... it was way past my bedtime!

Whether or not you like Jacob Collier’s style, you have to respect it because it’s a guy expressing himself musically using one of the best musical minds out there. He is able to turn extremely complex music theory into the emotions that he feels and I think that’s super respectable.

To me, this absolute beautiful compelation of musical techniques and theory blended so well is amazing. And concidering this dude has four grammys and ive never heard of you... and concidering to get a grammy, you need a 75% play time of your music with a 5 year period. I understand people can hate things, but man to just hate people for no absolute reason but because the guy is being free in doing what he wants is absurd. People find so many reasons to hate and less to love, thats how we become jaded. If you dont find it pleasing to you then dude you can literally ignore everything this guy has instead of wasting your energy. But hey, you have the freedom to hate as well maybe not the best use of your time but you do you.

It's weird, I watch this guy and I'm not even that crazy about his stuff, but his ability - in every sense; vocally, instrumentally, compositionally, theoretically - is so superior, that I'm completely fixated. My wife was like, "he must be on the spectrum," but he's not. He's totally normal socially, from what I've seen of him speaking to people outside of performance. He's a genius. He might be the greatest musical genius in our lifetime. Pretty cool to see a master of this caliber. I can't help but watch.

same, i'm entranced by the guy but his music is... _too much_ right?? This here song, at least it's only a piano and his voice, so it has more charm than a lot of his other stuff that I've heard. I hope he outgrows this compulsion to cram layers of complexity in each song to the point where everything feels kinda bloated. but maybe that's just his personality and hey, who am i, and lots of people seem to love what he does... @@zacharywilliams2 Let me preface this by saying getting the words wrong is damn near blasphemy with a Leonard Cohen song, as lyrics are basically the entire purpose. It would be like getting the lyrics to a Bob Dylan song wrong. Well, I'll admit that when I watched this I didn't read the entire description, I just skimmed it as I often do. But reading it now, I think that's a very, very poor excuse. If it really is one of his favorite songs, he would know the lyrics to the first verse. I mean fuck, that's like the main verse that average people remember. But he was far more concerned with unorthodox chord progressions and harmonies and all that vocal noodling. It comes off as extremely obnoxious and shallow, especially with the Grammys strategically placed in the back. He also managed to completely butcher the song anyway. The song should reflect humility. Instead, he is exactly the opposite. If he wanted to perform like that, why couldn't he just pick a different song? He's got the chops to butcher any song. Why choose Leonard Cohen and a song that had already been covered that evening, and which has been covered to death. I can only guess he wanted to show how unique he could be. Bleh.

Sometimes I hope that society is going to developed past the idea of superiority and qualification... the neverending expectation to compete and to exceed, to do better then those around you. I dislike the thaught that inferior in some ways means valueless in every way as it prevents so many from ever trying to create themselves. I feel like some people are almost reducing Jakob and those like him down to his superiority instead of truly valuing his art and creation. Music in and of itself is not a competition but it certainly can easily be mistaken for one...

His talent is truly stunning. He is clearly a musicians musician, crafting with the complexity that other well-studied artisans can appreciate. While the impressively well-written lyrics of Cohen take a back seat in this version, there is no denying the beauty of the tonal journey, both through the keyboard and vocally that Jacob carries the listener along on. He is simply amazing.

hi Jacob. thanks for this video. i am writing to you from Italy. I am very sad because I had a great opportunity to see you live at the Roundhouse on April 8th but, due to the coronavirus, I had to cancel my trip (and you had to cancel the concert). I would have come to see you with my whole family. I hope to have other opportunities, perhaps in Sicily, closer to my home. Music plays a big role in this period for the whole community of the world that is forced to stay at home. people have more time to listen to it and to get relief and recreation. you are very good at this and have a great ability to bring happiness and positive feelings. you have a great gift but also a great responsibility in helping to transmit positive feelings with your music. Keep the smile. You are the music. keep it up.
