Shooting the Dickert of its first day on a woods walk. I regret now showing you the rat hole "one ragged hole" group this Rice barrel put on paper as the day started out. Incredible. So far, I worked out to a 80 grain FF load with a .015" bear greased patch and a .530" RB. It was a very humid, damp, wet, moist, soggy day and the flint on the lock is the one it came with. I replaced the flint today with a larger dark gray English flint from TOW that showers sparks like the 4th of July. Enjoy the video and thanks for watching! Be sure to check out the other flintlock videos! • Flintlock

I have two rifles on order from GRRW, they are in fact taking orders, one offs from some of the original gun smiths. I'm like a kid waiting on Christmas, can't wait to get delivery of mine. A Jim Bridger Hawken and a Full stock Flintlock Hawken. Thanks for your efforts on these Flintlock shooters, I'm sure it will help spread the sport.

Thank you! That Dickert rifle is patterned after a good well known German maker I am sure you know.

I know:-) but not so many blackpowder shooters here know the tradition and names like Dickert or Schrojer or Womelsdorf school who had there roots in germany. But to me these are the most beautiful rifles in the world.

At the Alamo how many shots would the average shooter get off per minute? As undermanned as they were I doubt if they had someone loading behind them and passing weapons back and forth. It would have taken a very resolute character to load that weapon while under fire.

Congratulations on this video. Very nice to see how you guys try to dress up in the same kind of clothing people back then would have worn. Have a question though for you flintlock guys: If you had your rifle loaded and the steel closed, how long could you walk around in that kind of weather before the chances of a misfire would have become most likely?

Many variables to that including the condition of ones flint, his prime and so on. Some walk all day in cold, damp fog with little to no issue especially on a fresh load with unfired (not fired that day). As we shoot, the warm breach and the residues tend to want to absorb some moisture. I have been to some real cold wood walks and the flints do great. The air here tends to be dry, especially if not down by the river bottom - dry air is your friend. Overall to answer the question - it is not much of an issue. Maintain and tread the rifle right and she'll shoot every time.

Hi Denny, Thank you so much for your answer. Picked up antique collecting about a year ago (mostly pistols so far), and of course am trying to learn as much as I about all subjects concerning these old guns.

Would a tight fitting Rifled Conical bullet have any effect on a smoothbore muskets accuracy?

Not really. I'm not sure it would gain spin as a patch is around it. And if it didnt have the patch, powder would escape around it.

I know a guy who does this with minie balls and it works. Give it a shot. The hollow base in the base cavity expands to the grooves. Also I’ve been told that the center of gravity for a minie ball is the same as a round ball because of weight distribution. So it should theoretically work.

It's a lovely Pennsylvania rifle. Very well done. I guess 50 or 54 caliber. I settle for my Kentucky of Ardesa (Traditions) and Pedersoli. Please could you make a video with your friends explaining how to improve the ignition with the rifles of flint lock in wet days and with snow?. Here, in the north of Spain, there is a humid climate and it rains a lot and we all want our muzzleloading rifles to light up fast and well. Greetings friend.

She is a .54. The advice I am given is to do the following: Some recommend a dry cotton patch clean (some put 99% alcohol on it) and keep it in your bag, wipe your flint and frizzed between shots. Some prime with 3f others 4f, wipe and keep pan clean, clean touch hole between shots or prior to taking a shot use your vent cleaner to push in slightly into the main charge. Also clean and wipe the bottom of the frizzen where it covers your prime. Keep powder dry, sometimes you should run a dry patch or perhaps an alcohol patch down the bore if shooting a lot that day. Flint maintenance is critical to get good spark. Having right sized flint with a good well snapped edge. I made a snapping awl this week (see instagram) in order to knap the edge. A hard frizzen, combined with a well sized and properly knapped flint I have learned will create a shower of sparks igniting your prime. Keep the prime below and slightly back from the vent/touch hole. This allows for the FLASH and radiant heat to push from the prime towards the vent hole igniting your charge. Use a healthy prime amount as well! Hope this helps some.

Hello mate. Thank you very much for your reply. For prime the Swiss NUL B is the best , but it is very difficult to obtain in Spain. For the rifles the Swiss No. 1, which is a 4 FFFFg, also works very well. In France, too, very good gunpowder is manufactured to prime flintlock pistols and rifles. Greetings from Spain.
