Do the people who get offended by this not understand acting is a job? Getting asked "why do you want to work here" and answering "I need a job" is incredibly relatable for me, a regular person, applying for jobs

It's so crucial to acknowledge how people like Elordi and Pattison can bash their work and be "cool" but when Rachel Zegler does it, she's "insufferable." The double standard is weird and honestly, I am sending all of the well wishes to her and her success. She killed it in the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and I bet she's going to be incredible in Snow White. Some people are so chronically online, I stg. Editing this to add: Rachel is incredibly young (22 years old as of me writing this), so maybe that's worth considering. She's learning. Be kind. Further editing this to add: I have seen clips of Rachel stating in an interview that her costar's role could be completely cut from a film and "that's Hollywood." I agree with criticism that that is unacceptable and disrespectful. But also remember she is likely being encouraged by Disney to "girl boss." So let's all point and laugh at the big company funding these things :)

Of course, misogyny plays a part in women always getting harsher criticism than their male counterparts, but you are completely ignoring the fact that they're distancing themselves from it years on whereas Zegler has been talking shit about her project before it has even come out. Elordi and Pattinson are also only talking about the work that they were a part of, not an incredibly influential and beloved piece of work that has stood the test of time like Zegler has been with her criticisms of the original Snow White film.

@@shradhachawan4569 It's just misogyny - most people who I still see keep harassing her over those words are redpill men and people who farm egagement from them. The genuine critisism already mostly died out, because people said their piece and let it go instead of dragging the poor girl through the dirt for an opinion that anti-woke crowd doesn't agree with. They don't hate her because she doesn't love the character, they hate her because they hate anything that is 'woke' and she is an easy target.

People aren't thrilled at changing the race of a storybook character (which I could see as a valid criticism) and are projecting that anger onto the poor actress who got that part, which is completely nonsensical. Were they expecting her to just turn down the opportunity of a lifetime because of her skin color??? If there is legitimate criticism here (*that isn't racism, as that's certainly part of it) it should fall solely on the Disney execs who are choosing to race swap beloved characters instead of actually creating new and inventive stories for the current generation of children.

all I can think about is Constance Wu being dragged back in 2019 for getting upset that _Fresh Off the Boat_ kept getting renewed, which meant she had to turn down a bunch of projects she was really keen about. people attacked her for wanting to do other things instead of the show. she attempted suicide because the blowback was so harsh. she didn't deserve that.

The glaring hate for Rachel that to me as someone who barely pays attention to press about movies came out of nowhere, makes so much more sense now that you've explained her speaking out about her movies next to other actors all of whom are men. Like ohhhhhh yeah the unfair microscope placed on women's (and people who don't fall under the American ideal of white's) words when men get praised for saying the same or even more harsh and honest thing is happening again. I would say fork spotted in the kitchen but its its more like oh i forgot that the fork does get commonly spotted in the kitchen. Like the double standard makes me so angry especially because its so easy to forget that its a important factor in ALOT of criticisms in general

Tbh i never understood ppl praising Rob for his disdain for twilight like he passed some decent guy test. "Look how he hates it, look how he cringes at these annoying little girls that love him!" It’s also interesting how it’s never the female contrepart that demonstrates that behavior. (Iirc the main guy from 50 shades also disliked the series pretty overtly) I’m 100% sure the reactions would be less inclined to praise the lead actress doing this and would steer closer to ’oh she’s so entitled and ungrateful’ territory.
@raelrojas5263
@raelrojas5263 11 ай бұрын
Absolutely! It also plays a certain role in this that twilight is for teen girls and middle age women, so hating it makes you correct and funny. And when people get called out on hating only ""girls"" (men can and should like stuff regardless of gender) stuff, they go "well actually, is toxic and pedophilia. So I'm doing this to protect girls", then go on to love indiana jones, a hero who canonically groomed a sixteen year old, and celebrates everything that perpetuates abuse.

Rob honestly did a piss poor job at playing Edward. He read Edwards internal dialog and thought it would be good to show it externally. He took all his charm away because he read a couple chapters of midnight sun a decade before it was released. There was a reason to fall in love with book Edward, but because of Rob there wasn't a single thing to actually like about movie Edward. Him hating on twilight is spitting in the face of everyone who enjoyed it and we eat that shit up. The only reason people love that he hates it is because we enjoy making fun of things teen girls like.

Hot take: aside from the obvious gender double standards, I think more people are ok with dunking on twilight and kissing booth because both promote pretty toxic relationships. Meanwhile Snow White is a product of its time but overall wholesome in its message. Still think it’s ridiculous that Jacob Elordi and Rob Pattinson get praised for doing the same thing people hate on Rachel zegler for doing.

Sorry but I disagree. Even movies/shows that are well written are very likey to be ignored or sh*t on JUST because their target demographic is girls/young women. Look at Turning Red, for example. Old white men basically treates that movie as an alien film just because the main story was about a young Asain-Canadian girl going through changes and becoming a teenager. Even though plenty of movies with that same premise get praised because the protag is a white boy

@@starsiadraws I agree with the sentiment but by that logic the film bros would be bashing on Snow White too since it’s the epitome of girl-centered media. Maybe the need to dogpile on a young actress outweighed the need to bash a girly movie though. So now all the film bros are acting like Snow White is their favorite movie even though they probably haven’t watched it in years.

Sorry, but I whole heartedly disagree. At least those are made by women for women, and isn't actually apealing to the guys that are actually responsible for going on and doing that kind of shit. Do you know what is one of the most celebrated movies in history, "indiana jones" a movie catered to men that celebrates a university teacher doing statuatory rape to a teen. People like to give moral excuses, only when they already have decided to hate on it because its for """"girls"""". If a thing is for guys they never have to abide by those standarts. Not getting into how also this arguments are usually victim-blamey, in a she is reaponsible for being able to enjoy power dinamics in fiction, not the guys actually abusing them in real life.

Okay, two things for a defense about Rachel Zegler… One, it’s not like Disney doesn’t want to portray the same ideals about the new movie in comparison to the old movie. This is probably what they want and they are ruining a young actress’s career by pushing her to say it. Second, regarding the blatant sexism on display here: A man ist allowed to react. A woman can only overact. (- TS)

I really don’t understand the Rachel Zegler hate. She seems like a really talented broadway actress. She met her boyfriend on the set of WSS and initially turned down the role for the Hunger Games prequel because she’d just been filming in London and wanted to be with her family instead. But when her boyfriend got cast in the prequel (which the casting director had no idea they were dating, he’s just a good actor in his own right) she asked if they’d reconsider her because she really wanted to work alongside him again and wouldn’t have to be away from him anymore, which I thought was quite sweet. You know, turning down such a big and lucrative role to be with family and loved ones. And from what I’ve seen from BTS she got along with the rest of the cast and enjoyed making the film. She’s even admitted to loving the HG books and films, which is nice, and not always a given. She’s 22, so of course, she was apart of the teen dystopia craze like the rest of us Gen-Z people and loved the books. Equally, from what I’ve heard, the film is quite good…so I just don’t get it. She doesn’t seemed conceited at all. Just you know, a normal person. Honestly, it’s so backwards that male actors can admit when they’re just doing a job for a pay check and don’t really like the script, but female actors get slated for it. If I got offered a bunch of money to be part of a Marvel franchise, I’d take it even if I didn’t particularly like the script. If Jacob and Rob can admit to not liking a franchise they were apart of, why can’t she? It’s Shazam 2, it ain’t that deep! Also, Rachel didn’t even say she hated Snow White, she just said she doesn’t like the (arguably) old-fashion rhetoric of the woman always being saved by the man in classic fairy tales. She wanted something more modern, like a female lead having her own ambitions and interests or, alternatively, saving herself instead of waiting around to be rescued. And since the new Snow White is doing a more modern take on the story, she said she was excited to be apart of it. Which, in my opinion, if you’re going to do a remake, you should change the story (at least a little), have a fresh take, present new ideas and themes which build upon the story. Otherwise, what’s the point? We’ve already seen Snow White. If I wanted to see it again, I’d watch it again. Do something different. Also, bringing Rachel’s race into it too is so low. Snow White being white absolutely had nothing to do with the story, and added absolutely nothing to plot. If it was relevant in anyway, I’d get it, but c’mon. It was the same thing with Ariel, like, be so for real, what does it even matter? Rachel isn’t even dark-skinned, she’s half-Columbian. She’s a white Latina. God forbid the girl catches a tan, she’ll be crucified.

With Zegler some people are getting defensive because they are defending a nostalgic movie from their childhood. I think that is why you have seen some fans of the kissing booth be critical of Eldori’s comments as well. Of course doesn’t discount any misogyny/racism at play with the Zegler criticism.

Can I just say, I'm super tired of Twilight hate, and never enjoyed that Robert Patinson got so much praise for hating on them. I feel like there is also a clear double standart on critizing them based on who wrote the stories behind those movies and who are meant to enjoy them. Women. Even if it portraks relations that are toxic, they are clearly kinky to some degree and catered to women, the movie doesn't appeal to the actual men doing the shitty toxic thing in real life. While movies like "Indiana Jones" celebrate a guy doing statuatory rape to a 16 year old (and george lucas stated he wanted her to be even younger). Those are the movies that are actually catered to the men who abuse power dinamics. And no one cares Also there is this victim-blamey feeling about all this. As if women enjoying and being turned on by power dinamics in fiction, are somehow responsible for the men in real life abusing them. I'm not saying you are wrong to enjoy any movie "Indiana jones" or "Twilight" I'm saying there is a clear biass pushing hate on womens media, and then going on to make up a moral reason just to not feel bad about the subconscious sexism most people partake in.

I highly disagree with this comment- im sorry but twilight is genuinely a garbage piece of fiction (other than it being a "so bad its good" or "fun bad" movie), and robert pattinson criticising / making fun of how badly the plot is written, and how badly the characters in twilight are written, and how toxic bella and edward's relationship is, is completely valid (and kristen stewart also does the exact same thing making fun of the twilight movies lmfao). Neither robert pattinson nor kristen stewart are making fun of the movie because it was written by a woman or because it caters to young girls, theyre making fun of it because its just a bad piece of media (outside the nostalgia factor). Even many twilight fans who grew up with the movies/books acknowledge that they are objectively bad movies/books in hindsight. Although I will agree that there were many boys at the time who jumped on the twilight hate bandwagon for the wrong reasons because it was a cheesy romance movie aimed at girls, so I dont disagree that misogyny definitely did play a part in the twilight hate, HOWEVER making fun of twilight doesnt make you misogynistic because it is still a trash series that glorifies and romanticises a toxic and abusive relationship to young girls.

Please be fr, edward and bella's relationship wasnt kinky, it was predatory, creepy and toxic. A key thing about "kinky" relationships is consent. Not to mention twilight wasnt aimed at adult women, it was aimed at young impressionable teen girls who ended up romanticising edward and bella's relationship because they were very young and didnt know any better / couldnt recognise how toxic the relationship was. Thats not to say that all media about toxic relationships is bad, but there's a very big difference between consuming and enjoying fiction about a toxic couple that is deliberately portrayed as toxic by the creator and the audience KNOWS is toxic, vs consuming and enjoying fiction about a toxic couple that is portrayed as romantic by the creator so the audience is unable to recognise how toxic the relationship is. For example, both twilight and the "interview with the vampire" tv show feature toxic vampiric romances where there is a huge power imbalance, but there is a huge difference between how bella and edward's relationship is portrayed vs how Louis and Lestat's relationship is portrayed.

"the movie doesnt appeal to the men doing shitty toxic things in real life" irrelevant point, nobody is arguing that twilight made men do shitty and toxic things, the problem is that twilight romanticised and idealized toxic controlling relationships in the eyes of young teen girls so that they were more likely to be drawn to and seek out these types of relationships. If the media you consume teaches you that these toxic relationships are romantic (especially as a young impressionable teen), then you will be less likely to identify red flags and recognise toxic relationships in the real world, especially if you yourself end up in a toxic relationship.

"women enjoying and being turned on by power dynamics in fiction" girl if you're a grown woman turned on by edward and bella's relationship you need to seriously re evaluate some things fr 💀💀 Edward and Bella's relationship was not just about power dynamics, Edward was openly extremely controlling and possessive towards bella and his behaviour was portrayed as romantic. I also dont think its a good thing to be romanticising relationships with extreme power dynamics in fiction. Power dynamics in sex/smut is one thing, I have no issue with that as long as it is consensual, but romanticising power dynamics in romantic relationships where one person (usually the man) consistently holds alot of power over the other person (usually the woman), and frequently exploits this power dynamic to control the pther person, is just gross and harmful IMO.

@@FirstnameLastname-zq8oy So it is completely relevant, cause you very much are explicitly agreeing with the argument I'm against, you are indirectly admitting that you think: Women are more responsible of having to identify red flags (which so many times aren't there until pretty late) to protect themselves, than men and patriarchy of constructing these things in the first place and enforcing it. My point is pretty much propaganda is everywhere and in every movie (romantization of colonialism, violence, the military and cops) and across the board, very little media doesnt contribute to things that are toxic to us. But you prefer to go after the media that although echoes this power dynamics, is targeted to the sexual enjoyment of women (many developed enough to just enjoy the kinky part) than the many MANY movies that actualy target and encourage men to do shitty things. Making these kinds of things dissapear from our culture is equally hard (Imposibly so because there are a lot more factors than just pop culture constructing them), but one is certainly going to be much more effective (stopping the entitlement of men that think they are allowed and owed things from women), and the other is robbing women of at least enjoying themselves. My friends and me knew what red flags you should look for and let me tell you, the world was still a dangerousbplace, going after fiction that women actually enjoy, before any of the actual things causing the abuse in the first place shows a clear biass. Women (Queer and in general minorities) should be free to enjoy life and their kinks without having to be constantly vigilant, scare and responsible; but people love to ask the sacrifice and effort from the wrong people. Ps: Also let me tell you, the sexual enjoyment of these dynamics existed before the reading any of those books, because the construct already permeates our whole society, that is why every one of these books has so much success, it appeals to an already existing thing. Culture solidifies ideoligy it doesn't generate it, there is a lot to do and change before movies. But you are free not to like them, just don't pretend the internets moral crusade against it is justified. Thus, analizing culture, has a philosophical and even moral use, understanding propaganda and how people unconsciously echo the systems constructs and ideoligy, but then the fight should go on to be against those systems. Transform into actual action and not internet fighting

the scriptwriter of snow white is greta gerwig, same writer as the barbie movie and little women. when zegler was talking about the movie she was basing it off the script she worked with, and knowing gerwig, it's definitely going to have a more progressive feminist take. and let's be real, snow white getting saved by being kissed by a rando man in the woods while he thinks she's dead is weird and creepy. zegler essentially said that in this retelling, snow white is empowered to save herself from the queen. i don't think any reasonable person would say that's such a terrible moral to impart in the 21st century 🤷‍♀️

I am so tired of people making actors bad people. jacob elordi is one of my favorite people. He seems nice he cares so much about his character he probably didn't like to make those movies because his character wasn't complex, and the movie was so bad happy for. The other cast seems like they have fun, but people are mad about jacob. elordi, he said he didn't like to make those movies that make no sense. I found that so unfair because everyone has different opinions about everything. I don't know why because I just got tired of it. I was scared to say Something about this, then I watched this someone jacob elordi. Unfortunately, I was like this so unfairly. I just wanted to say something about it because actors are human beings also

Actors looking back on a shitty movie they were in and making fun of it just seems like a normal thing for people to do about jobs they’ve had in general. I feel like making fun of the traditional Snow White while they were still promoting the new one was mainly bad timing

It always feels so gendered when these topics come up. Robert Patterson? I can guarantee a lot of those "respect" comments were from men, and who was twilight aimed towards? Young women. I can almost guarantee it was the same for Jacob. The film he was in? Aimed towards teenage girls. Shitting on things that girls like (and I'm not talking because of quality here) is a staple in Men Online Behaviour™ so of course when a woman hits back in the exact same way on DC film she gets lambasted

Rachel Zegler does NOT deserve the hate shes getting, in the slightest. However, she isnt just talking about how "patriarchy exists". Shes saying kindness in the face of adversity isnt strength if it ends with a marriage. As someone who grew up with abuse at home and saw snow white and cinderella as role models, its... whats the word? Disheartening? But again, shes a great woman, great actress, and i love her in everything ive seen her in

I have nothing against Rachel Zegler but MAN was she miscast! The lead actor should be able to connect with the source material in a meaningful way. Rachel doesn’t seem to like the original Snow White that much. That’s perfectly fine, nobody has to like Snow White. However, this is a serious remake of a historically significant movie, so the person playing Snow White ought to understand the character. Again, no hate to Rachel, she’s only doing a job. I blame Disney 100%

I don't think we can really compare Robert's situation to Rachel's cuz Twilight was objectively ATROCIOUS, what positive thing could he say about his experience in the movie if it followed the book's plot, which itself is hard to read? The characters were fucked up and the plot so corny and badly written, if he tried to say positive things about it he would have ended up looking ridiculous or just fake for the sake of being. Snow White is a fairy tale which is aimed to a public of kids who don't usually mind the whole princess and prince concept, they're not that aware of what's realistic or problematic cuz they simply don't think too much of things. Being mad at the disney movie as an adult is quite frankly more childish than the fairy tale itself. Another difference is that Robert was a perfect Edward despite everything and the movie's performance was atleast close to the original plot..I don't think I need to say anything about Snow White cuz we already know. I can't help but think she was being overly critical about the old version cuz she wanted to promote hers. The Snow White movie wouldn't have been different from any other remake done so far, the part of the liberal celebrity who advocates for women's rights in a movie for kids has been played by every single other actress that took part in these remakes. She most probably just needed a job and started speaking of it as if it was the best movie in the world despite it's imminent flop which is basically the opposite of what Robert did. She did come off as passive aggressive, the Brie Larson comparison is spot on cuz they had the same vibe and u can't rlly blame people for having a bad feeling about them. She can be the sweetest but one single ambiguous word can make people change their opinions about u.
