So hard for men to speak to about stuff like this
@adamolition87024 жыл бұрын
I think for men the whole idea of being sexually abused seems emasculating, but that's the core problem. sexual abuse is a criminal offense, and should not be subjected to gender. masculinity should not be characterized as someone who is unable to show emotions, shed a tear, talk about downfalls and speak out about personal harm done to them by other people. Brave guy for speaking out and not being (as) phased about it. and I hope all of this toxic masculinity will be over and society will understand we're all made out of the same material.
@arturo4354 жыл бұрын
Also, most male victims are usually children or teenagers(bar sexual assault victims in prison) So, that doesn't help either. It's way easier for our brains to shut this kind of stuff away when we're young so that we don't have to suffer with reality, it's a self preservation mechanishm. Also, obviously, it's way easier for these monsters to groom young minds into believing that nothing wrong is happening and so they never actually go back in their memories and realize that what was happening was wrong. It's horrible.

Happened me too in my sexual abuse case in Ireland. Was a completely different outcome when it came to my sisters (which I'm overjoyed they received some sort of justice), but it shocked me how the justice system (and my own family) responded to me as a guy opening up first. Not that I care or expect their validation of being believed, etc., I learned just to get on with life and surround myself with positive minded people, but it does go to show that there is a fault in the justice system towards men that experience assault or sexual abuse, and I don't mean to sound sexist but there just is an issue in the system - because of societal expectations of men. I'm only glad I was to testify in court on behalf of my sisters and help them as much as I could as their big brother, and I still hope to do that even now as they grow up into amazing strong women.

*I had an uncomfortable/questionable experience happen to me with the doctor that I had gone to literally my ENTIRE life. I'm #4 out of 5 children in my family and we had been going to this pediatrician since my oldest sibling was a newborn. It wasn't until I was 15 that I really felt like something was a little off during some visits. Now at 26 years old and with a 4 year old of my own, my child will NEVER go into a room without me. Not for any appointment, ever. I don't care what it is. I birthed this child, I have a right and will express my right to be present for anything and everything involving any kind of appointment with another person around my child. There's no reason not to be, but a million reasons to be.*
@mercuryfever3926 жыл бұрын
When he was talking about how somethings are uncomfortable that happen at doctor's offices but you don't question it, I thought the same thing. As a kid, when your pediatrician has to examine you sometimes that means they have to examine private parts of your body. Now, generally speaking...that is part of their job. It made me think about how a lot of times doctors will explain the treatment to you, talk it over, ask for your feedback regarding how comfortable you feel with doing that. I wonder if he ever actually did any of that. I know it seems a lot of the female victims said he didn't tell them what he was going to do or why. He just did it. My thinking is that maybe because he was such a master manipulator, he was able to use that respect and power to skip that because he knew his status would enable him to get away with no explanation. There is also the gymnast aspect where they say you don't question what they tell you, you're told and you do it.

Coming forward helps so many others. I struggled for almost thirty years over coming to terms with sexual abuse by my doctor. I'm still struggling with knowing what, if any legal action can be taken. Hearing how all the athletes describe their feelings of doubt and shame, what happened, learning about grooming tactics...I finally knew what had happened to me and that it was evil. I'm about ten years older than them and they taught me so much and I've been able to start healing and get my power back.

It seems like the thematic difference in him and when a non-predatory doctor has to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable, they very much acknowledge, "this is really uncomfortable." Some things are uncomfortable in the medical world. Paps. Sports Physicals. Seeing a urologist... but you know what those people are doing is legit, and they acknowledge that "this is weird, I know. I'm sorry that this is necessary." Acupuncture in the pelvis doesn't even sound real. Trust your gut kids. If it feels wrong, it probably is wrong. Other than when you're actually having your stuff examined, they probably don't need to be there.

I agree with you, but specifically in Nassar's case, there were times when parents were in the room and he still abused patients. He angled his body in a way that they couldn't see what he was doing, and the kids assumed that if their parents could see it, Larry wasn't doing anything wrong. For example, in Rachael Denhollander's book, she said that she told her mom about what Larry did to her a few months after it happened. Her mom said, "I'm so sorry, Rachael.
