But, there is an over production of wine worldwide and a lot of it is now very good. The very best French wine is still superb but a lot of places have caught up especially using the Australian method which I believe is still forbidden in France? ( Night harvesting to preserve bouquet and volatile fractions, spotless steel vessels, chilling the wine etc. It can really improve the wine.) Some regions would do well to change the grape varieties too but aren't allowed. There is also a problem with the climate and that should have been mentioned when they were talking about Kent which is more suitable to grapes now than apples, and a lot of the wine growing regions in France are going to be too hot, and don't have enough water so they are suffering with the harvest. Don't get me wrong, at it's best it's still the best there is but a lot of the Bordeaux superior for instance, really aren't very good, but give me a Côte-Rôtie and I'm in heaven and I can't imagine people are going to stop buying Petrus or Margaux

The fact is that there is a severe shortage of labour in the UK, pickers, packers, truckers etc. Which means farmers are not planting, greenhouses are being dismantled and sold for scrap, much of what has been cultivated has now been ploughed back in and less land is being used for farming in the UK. Production from UK farms has reduced 20% per hectare where as production is 5% up in Europe per hectare and there is more land given over to farming since the Russian invasion of Eastern Ukraine. And in the case of The Netherlands the added pressure on them to reign in their Nitrous Oxide emmissions (due to laws introduced 30 years ago, which weren't enforced until recently, but had to be when an environmental organization sued the Government for failing to do so and won). So those issues are of a different nature than the Brexit induced collapse of the British Agricultural sector.

This illustrates exactly why farmers are giving up, Mogg is ignorant of agriculture and everything that effects ordinary folk. The farmer is right, supermarkets make contracts and then criticise the crop and underpay. They have always held imports to bash farmers, so now we get empty shelves, and short use times. What a beautiful piece, thank you for sharing. I tend to fall down in debates as I don't have the answers immediately to hand, but David here was faultless. Each pin set up by Rees-Mogg was easily knocked down. What a great speaker and someone who clearly knows his field. Brexit is a good example of economists seeing how things could be better and trying to change them overnight, without considering how it might affect things in reality. Like playing a game to see how things pan out, knowing that you can easily start again if it goes badly. So sad that the remain voters appeared to have been right, I for one would have loved to be wrong.

The fact that UK export of apples grew by +6.31% 2022-2023 suggests that the farmer on here is actually incorrect and the fact that whole Apple Pear and quices export market is worth a grand total of £8.7 million would suggest that the true reason the farmers in Kent are stopping growing apples and turning to growing wine grapes is because there has been a surge in popularity in English wine thus creating more demand for the grapes which makes it far more lucrative and easier for farmers to do this. I remember Reece Mogg stating we shouldn't worry about the difficulty of importing our salad veg over winter from Spain and southern Europe due to Brexit as we'd be able to air freight it in from California. Here in Germany they are protesting about the removal of subsidies for their diesel fuel. Less specifically, they feel that the Greens in the coalition don't help farmers enough. It's mind-boggling that we got into this mess. Brexit is objectively a catastrophe. I accept EU membership wasn't perfect and there are areas of the EU that would benefit from reform, but on balance the benefits of being in the EU far, FAR outweighed the costs. Everyone who says 'Oh we'll see a benefit in 50 years' is just absovling themself of any responsibility for the stupidity because they will never be in a position to be held accountable. If we think about 50 years ago from now, that was the mid-seventies in the middle of the cold war with no internet or mobile phones. Anyone who claims to have a solid and accurate understanding of what the world is going to be like in 50 years time is a liar.

Farming?? Tennant farmer with 1000 acre, part hill land, was getting subsidies per head running about 600 cattle and was doing OK. EU changed to subsidies to per acre. He sold all his cattle, sat back and played at farming a couple of hours a day and in the ensuing years made a fortune....nuff said ......

One of my oldest friends was a fruit farmer. He grew strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants on a farm his family had rented for 3 generations. He did pick your own and also had a contract with Asda. He relied on an influx of workers from the EU to pick the fruit for the Asda contract. In 2018, instead of his usual 50 workers arriving, only 12 turned up. As a result, he could not pick enough fruit to fulfil his Asda contract and, although he tried to increase the pick your own and to recruit local workers, much of his crop went rotten. The few local workers he got were no match for the ones from the EU. The next year, Asda ended his contract. In 2020, massive losses meant that his farm went into administration. He had to move out and live in a rented house. My friend and I have only ever disagreed on one thing. He was pro-Brexit and I was against it. We argued like cats and dogs over it. I last saw him in 2022 and his final words to me were, "You were right; Brexit's been a bloody disaster. They lied to us." Last year, he got a job managing a fruit farm in Ireland, a move made easier by him qualifying for an Irish passport through his mother. In his Christmas card in Dec 2023, he said "I won't be coming back. Brexit has broken British agriculture".
