As we all know Sonic Boom initially started development as a very different title called Sonic Synergy, what happened to that? What are the differences? Who screwed over Big Red Button? Take a guess...

@@calistusjay60 I always thought those series had a massive amount of potential. Sonic has great ideas bit either they arent excuted well or if they do excute it well, its almost never built upon. Other SEGA franchises like NIGHTS would have been fantastic to see today with much more technological progress (Balor's Wonderworld forgot the name lol) is very reminiscent of NIGHTS which is great. Well, if you insist, here's a rather long synopsis on how the Demo/first mission will go (be wary, it's a long one): It's a game I like to call : Mobius: a World Beyond The game starts just before the Days of Fury (The one with the Xorda and the Gene Bombs) You begin as a Human who signed up for an Experimental Project involving confiscated Xorda technology to create super soldiers by merging Human DNA with those of an Animal. You are instructed to give your name, select gender, what Element(s) you wish to control. (Yes, there is an Element Matchup Mechanic in this game, and each with a exclusive ability tree.) Finally, you pick which animal you want to be. And trust me, the Character Customization in Mobius will make Forces look barebones. You can pick from all assortments of animals, from Mammals, to Avians(Birbs), to reptiles and amphibians, fish and other sea life, even insects and arachnids! (I was thinking if you pre-ordered the game, you can also pick Mobiosuar, Echidna, And Dragon as bonuses!) for this example, let's say you're playing as a Male, Flame and Normie Elemental Wolf named Gadget. After you make your selections, you are led by a group of scientists who place you in a capsule-like structure to begin the Biomerge. Just as the excruciating metamorphosis begins, the Xorda arrives, and begins to unleash the Gene Bombs on the planet. The shockwaves cause the building you're in to collapse, crushing the scientists beneath the rubble. The torturous transformation continues until you finally lose consciousness. There you stay, changing along with the ruined Earth, but you remain trapped in time, never waking, for thousands of years. In those thousands of years, a tyrant ruled the reborn world, challenged only by a group of Mobian rebels known as the Freedom Fighters. For almost nine years, the mad overlord, Dr.Ivo Robotnik, have been pestered by the Freedom Fighters time and time again, until he comes across an ancient log that tells of an incredibly powerful creatures that slumber undistubed since the time of Ancients. If Robotnik could obtain just one of these legendary creatures, not even the Freedom Fighters will stop him. The Freedom Fighters learn about this plan, and two of their best are off on a race against time to see who can secure the legendary being first. And that is where your story, your adventure in a world beyond, begins... The game begins in the Mobian Badlands, and two Mobians were watching Swatbots guard the entrance to strange ruins. The two Mobian Freedom Fighters, Sonic the Hedgehog(in Classic form) and Sally Acorn easily dispatches the robots. Once inside the ruins, the duo split up to find the creature's whereabouts.You take control of Sonic in a tutorial for movement controls and object interaction. Once you finish this (option to skippable) tutorial, Sonic meets up wit Sally to discover a room where the creature is in. Unfortunately, this was a trap set up by Robotnik himself to not just obtain the creature, but to also capture the two best Freedom Fighters! Sonic attempts to keep the Swatbots off Sally as she uses Nicole to hack into a control panel to try to awaken the creature. Robotnik has enough and fires a portable robotizizer at Sally, who Sonic shoves out the way so the beam hits a metal wall. The resulting explosion knocks the two Freedom Fighters unconscious, but Nicole has already finished hacking the controls. Three guesses who the Ancient creature actually is. (Note: In this game, I made three paths with an additional branch. You start out on the Freedom Fighters path 1 in your first playthrough, and as you progress through the story, new Save Files which will let you play as new custom characters for Neutral and Villain paths will open up, each with their own perks.) You finally start to wake up , but the Merger gives you one last painful boost to your changed body. In blind pain and desperation, you used that boost to completely obliterate Robotnik's Swatbots in a battle tutorial and send the dictator flying far from the ruins. Once you burn out that energy, you once again fall unconscious just as Sonic and Sally regain theirs. Sally is astonished by the carnage and wonders where the creature went. Sonic, however, finds it lying on the floor of the ruins, and is shocked by its appearance. The ruins, due to the massive outpouring of energy from the awakening, stats to collapse, and the Freedom Fighters, with the creature in tow, flees the ruins just in time. The duo decided that this mission was a success, and heads back to Knothole to learn more about their new "creature"... You wake up in a strange new place with a blue hedgehog-like creature next to your bedside. Naturally, you freak out, falling out of bed in the process. The hedgehog, who introduces himself as Sonic, attempts to help you up, but then you noticed that your hand was no longer a Human one. You notice a mirror nearby, and you stumble towards it, staring back at you is... (The Second part of Character Customization starts here. This time, whatever animal you picked in the first half will be the Mobian animal you are. You can pick Body type, eye shape and colors, fur color, you can make your own markings, stripes, pick different features, etc. you can also pick starting accessories. Like gloves, shoes, and for example, glasses. After getting a good look at your new form, your screams alert two other characters, Tails and Boomer/Rotor. The two Freedom Fighters are ecstatic that you're finally awake after taking you in two days ago, and when they find out you were once a Human from thousands of years ago, Boomer practically loses his mind in excitement. Before you could get acquainted with your new friends, a transmission from Antoine warns the Freedom Fighters of a powerful Badnik that is dangerously close to Knothole. Tails, Boomer/Rotor, and Sonic head out, but befre you can come along, Sonic tells you to stay in the HQ and try to get yourself situated. Meanwhile, The AI, Nicole, welcomes you and invites you on a Tu-Tour-ial of The Freedom Fighter Base. (Note: You can save either on the fly, or in your room) Once you finish in the main control room, a Transmission from Sonic tells you that the badnik is more of a handful than he thought. He doesn't want to do this, but he needs your help. He's battling the robot in Great Forest Clearing 1, and Nicole can help you gear up for the battle. Once you get your items, you make your way towards Great Forest. You try to get a better vantage point from a tall tree, and once you do, you get a grand scope of how big this game's world will be. You can spot mountain ranges, what appears to be a floating Island, and a grey city tarnishing the pristine world. Nicole explains that city wasn't always that way, it was a beautiful city once, using technology to coexist and enhance nature, that is, until Robotnik happened. An explosion in a nearby clearing alerts you to an ensuing battle, and you hurry over. Three out of four Freedom Fighters were out of commission, with only Sonic left to take on the large machine solo, but even he's not without his fair share of injuries. You distract the Badnik into targeting you instead, and the robot recognize you as the "Ancient Being." You and Sonic team up to battle the robot, but once the Badnik reaches half health, it swats you and Sonic aside, and the droid closes in on you. In desperation, you inexplicably attack the machine with a strange power, the power of your Element(s) this leads into a Tutorial Curbstomp battle on how to use your Elemental powers. The Badnik is defeated at the end, and Sonic commends your skill. He asks you if you want to be a Freedom Fighter, and since you have no knowledge of this new world, you guess it wouldn't hurt to team up with them for a while. You agree to be a Freedom Fighter, and Sonic is happy you're a member of the team. Now, what's your first mission as a new official Freedom Fighter? Help Sonic carry Antoine, Boomer/Rotor, and Tails' unconscious bodies back to base. Once you get back to Freedom Fighter HQ, you meet Sally Acorn after returning from gathering medicinal berries. You're given an Exposition Dump about the Freedom Fighters and Robotnik, and you let Sally know you're going to give it your all to fuel the fight for freedom! Thus ends Mobius Mission # 0, prologue. (The first Mobius Arc will span the first 50 issues of the comic series some issues that were just filler will be replaced with missions based on certain Sonic SatAM episodes.)

I thought it would make a more narrative sense to have two customization scenes, with the first one being during the Days of Fury, you were only supposed to have the ability attributes of the animal you chose (Like regeneration, enhanced strength and speed, etc.) but you were basically left in the oven too long and got the physical appearance of your animal as well. The scene where you wake up at Knothole is where you can customize both your Mobian form and clothing options, since you're seeing for yourself what you look like for the first time, since I was planning the whole sequence to be from your character's first person perspective before switching to third person. I'm glad you like my ideas, though!

It's definitely SEGA and not the players. Anyone blaming the players is wrong. Sonic was riding high on Colors and Generations. No players and I mean *_NO PLAYERS_* asked for them to abandon a gameplay style that was working and deliver Lost World instead. And it's not the players constantly asking SEGA to rush out games. Even widely well received games like Frontiers clearly needed more dev time to work on issues like the severe pop-in. SEGA just keeps sabotaging this franchise over and over again. Big Red Button got it bad, so did the developers of Sonic Colors Ultimate and Sonic Origins. Time after time, SEGA just plain sucks. Anyone blaming the players too is just a SEGA Simp, trying to defend their favorite multinational corporation.

Yeah Nintendo kinda got thrown under the bus. (Not nearly as badly as Big Red though). SEGA just had to fork over some Sonic games. They didn't HAVE to shove Rise of Lyric in particular onto the Wii U but SEGA went "Hey we got this technical Sonic game already well into development. Just use this to finish the deal off and we're set!" without giving a lick of thought about what such a random shift would do to the game. If this game had been built from the ground up for the Wii U it would have turned out infinitely better.

If we want to be technical, the "mandates" weren't created until around 2013 after dealing with another 3rd party creator (you know, the most infamous one other than this one). It was their way of trying to keep everything together in tight management. But that aside, to reply to the original post, well, you're goddamn right. SEGA has always been like this ever since Sonic's inception, and it has ruined several unique and creative projects around this character ever since. And they're not stopping their behavior even when they're called out. In fact, they just push harder for it than before. It really shows that they really had little idea how to manage this icon even since 1994.

Why is Sega so against having story-driven Sonic products? If you're not going to expand on the lore in your games, why hold other studios back, especially if it's not affecting the main cannon. You know why some people like the Pre-Genisis Archie Sonic comics, because it had "a world unique beyond what you know from the Sega games". Yes, those comics had their problems, but they attracted those who wanted more outside of the games and it didn't affect the world built in the mainline games. There is an audience that is into expanded lore that Sega refuses to acknowledge and it cost them when they limited the potential Sonic Boom had. With the perfect balance of creative freedom and supervision, Sega and other companies can create new worlds for their mascot.

I too feel the same way when it came to Archie Sonic Pre-Genisis wave. I was never really a Sonic fan until I read Archie Sonic one year ago. I had already seen both Sonic Boom tv series and Sonic X but those never really peaked my interest for vey long and I never played any of the games either. But what sold me with Archie was the fact I got to see these characters grow, in other words I got to see how they were from the beginning, where they are now and how the events of the story changed them.
@JesseIART
@JesseIART 2 жыл бұрын
@@johanroyce6324 I often hear how Boom was made as an attempt to reach a western demographic. I know Sega probably didn't wanna collaborate with Archie by that time, but they could've just expanded on the comic with a show or spin-off games (I respect game canon as it's own entity). Or they could've done that during the Flynn Pre-Genesis era (started back in 2007 I think). Either way, it was a missed opportunity.

Man, the writers on the Sonic Boom tv show really WERE on another level. The comedic style of that show fit perfectly with Sonic. Each character had one specific over exaggerated trait, but it wasn’t done for no reason. It was done specifically so that they could write very specific jokes around those traits. Which was pretty brilliant tbh. The story and dialogue in Sonic games always comes off as cringe or corny. So the fact that the show didn’t take itself too seriously at all, really got rid of that issue all together. Hope that they re-hire those writers to write more Sonic dialogue in the future.
@sev1120
@sev1120 2 жыл бұрын
And they weren't just that character trait! Knuckles isn't just an idiot. He's quite intelligent when it comes to topics he's passionate about, and when he says something actually intelligent everyone does a double take. For an example, his speech on how bringing up the breaking of gender roles undermines the concept of gender equality. Tails isn't just the smart one. Sure, he's the smart guy in the group, but he's also extremely loyal to his friends, and is also cunning. For an example, when he sent UT with a hidden message to rescue him. Amy isn't the stereotype she is in the main series where she's obsessed with sonic. Granted, there are moments when the show says she has a crush on him, but she's still a hyper competent badass and the heart of the team. Sticks, the newest character, is the outcast. A conspiracy theorist and a tomboy who fights with homemade weapons. Despite her outlandish theories, she can often be described as the "voice of reason" for the team. Sonic isn't just "fast and cocky", he's a good guy. Granted, he can be a jerk, and he's not the most socially conscious, but he's been a hero most of his life, that'd screw up someone's social life a lot. Then there's Eggman. Sure, he's a villain, and Sonic's sworn enemy, but that doesn't mean they can't be friends. It's kinda like two guys whose jobs oppose each other, but when off the clock they're chill. Plus, he's got a lot of image issues, and there's some funny jokes. Like how his robots are programmed not to obey orders unless they're threatened. All in all, the main team makes a good 5 man band, and oftentimes Eggman can substitute one of the team members and fit in fairly well Sonic is the leader Tails is the smart one Knuckles is the big guy Amy is the heart Sticks fits the role of the lancer, as does Eggman

Sonic Boom really was the falling off point but for me it wasn't rock bottom of, well, this respective fall. Sonic had gained some street cred thanks to games like Unleashed, Colours and Generations and we were FINALLY getting Sonic reviews from pro-critics that didn't begin with "Oh boi o lawd Sonic sure has been through a rough patch" buuuuut then Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric happened. And it was like, okay, Lost World was uncharacteristic, but Rise of Lyric really pissed away all of that goodwill. Then I kinda figured, well, a return to what worked about games like Generations, that'll do the trick, right? ...right? ...damn it. Lost World was the cliff's edge, Rise of Lyric was the fall, Forces was the landing. With that said, I don't think Boom as a series was tooooo fundamentally bad, it just would've been better off being treated as an evolution of the Sonic we know and love as opposed to a dumping ground for new ideas. Then again, the new idea was, make Sonic slow in normal gameplay and make any fast bits like Sonic dash, so, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe I kinda get it. I sure hope the wait for the next Sonic game will be worth it.

This is a fun and informative video, I'd also like to add a couple fun facts about this game and the development process: -The gameplay the devs had in mind was actually implemented and working at some point, but its gimmicks and features had to be stripped down due to the WiiU's limitations, the devs refer to this time as 'the reform.' -One of the designers actually pitched the Sonic Boom television series to SEGA, and while they were originally meant to be seperate projects, SEGA instead decided to tie the two universes together. Much of the story and gameplay had to be changed very late in development because of this. -Many former annonymous BRB employees claim that the reason they had left the project during development had nothing to do with SEGA, Big Red Button or bad work conditions. -In the final game, Knuckles only has a partially animated walk cycle. The first half plays before reversing what just played. This "ping-pong" animation is especially noticeable when you focus on his quills. -Several cutscenes in the game are missing music, dialogue and sound effects. While patches have been made to alter the lighting, performance and textures in some cutscenes, the sound remains an issue still. I find this game super fascinating, so if anyone else knows interesting lesser known facts about this game or it's developpemt i'd love to hear it!

Engine issues due to Hardware; Sonic Xtreme says hello. Key people leaving during development; Sonic Xtreme and Sonic 06 again. Still people didn't get desperately ill during development like Sonic Heroes and again Sonic Xtreme. Gee it's almost like Sega never learns their lesson. Don't forget Archie! Nevermind that's OK, everyone wants to forget Archie, even SEGA...*insert chubby comic writer here intensifies* (anyway, for people who miss the point, it's that SEGA is equally responsible, if not more, for the strife this writer had against SEGA, Archie, and BioWare that ruined a once-compelling run of interesting stories. And instead of learning from this the right way shove their mandates even harder down people's throats - even though it has gotten them nothing but trouble - so we get even more half-baked stories that we are forced to accept as "good." So it's not only the games; it's everywhere in Sonic, and they will probably never learn. SEGA treats their 3rd party workers like shit.)

I want to add that there is a positive related to Sonic Boom failing: It was the motivation for SEGA of America to be restructured, with much of the old staff leaving and it being handled by Atlus USA by 2015. Basically the vice president at SEGA of Japan at the time acknowledged that the quality of their games has failed to meet expectations and wanted to improve. This can be seen with the sudden interest to revive old properties, tackle a global market, and allow outside companies to tackle their IPs. Stuff like the Yakuza series, Puyo Puyo series, Sakura Wars, Virtua Fighter, etc. getting another chance from the last several years might of not happened if SEGA didn't get that harsh wake up call to do better.

Despite this game reception, I still genuinely had fun with it and I still think that this concept is great and should definitely NOT die in a fire. It just needs time and attention to see what works and what doesn't for this franchise. It's one of those games that I really wish to see come to PC (or Unity maybe) to see what the modding community could bring to the table (bug fixes, Stages, new mechanics etc.).

Yeah, that's how most of the Dark Age times felt back then. Most famously, during the late 2000s...yeesh, I can relate. At least this one, while feeling dry, doesn't fill everyone with such negative vitriol recently. It feels great to be able to be more confident to admit that I'm a Sonic fan. The absence of weird looks and laughter definitely helps!

I always think about how good Sonic Boom/Synergy would've been if SEGA wouldn't have screwed over its development. I liked their new designs and the way the gameplay could've been. It was one of my most highly anticipated games in my life, and I've been waiting for years for the game to get the opportunity it truly deserves. I want SEGA to give Big Red Button another chance without screwing with their project. Hell! I'd make the game myself!

I don't buy merch, but I do have the Sonic Boom tv show on DVD and Fire and Ice (the second Boom game on 3DS). I got to say, I really like the character designs... Except Knuckles. But otherwise, I think they look better than the designs used in Team Sonic produced games.
@dominantasmr578
@dominantasmr578 3 жыл бұрын
@@ressljs I feel that, and I’m not trashing on the redesigns themselves. However from a profit standpoint it is most logical that they would change the designs in order to facilitate a new wave of merchandise for consumers of previous merch and for new fans of the series. It’s akin to Pixar movies like Toy Story which was literally created just to sell toys based off the movie. Children’s movies and tv shows for the most part don’t get greenlit if they are quality, but if they can also sell merchandise. That is where the bulk of the money is made for these companies. Not to sound condescending or like a know it all but from my experience I feel like this is what I have observed.

I remember being so excited for Sonic Boom. The behind the scenes videos and interviews made it seem like it would be a fresh, innovative take on Sonic. All that excitement went down the drain once that E3 gameplay was revealed. Annnnnd then the game released and it was one of the worst Sonic games of all time. What Sega did to Big Red Button was scummy af. It really shows crappy of a company they can be. It’s a shame since the cartoon was honestly pretty solid, but the whole Sonic Boom brand was killed by that awful game.

Sonic is peak when it takes itself seriously and is more mature, not only do I think boom would have been amazing with the original tone intact but the other games with more serious storys (like unleashed) have proven that sonic can work with that style of story telling, they just need to get the gameplay right The metarex saga in Sonic X is by far my favourite sonic anything to ever come out, especially the original Japanese version of it

When I heard about Boom, I actually had high hopes for it to be a great platformer game for once (with puzzles and the combos mind you) I wouldn't care if some character designs were slightly changed if it were for animating facial expressions better. Knuckles was the biggest for almost everyone cause that was a massive difference, but soon got use to it. Was sad that Sega strictly removed all the potentials the development team had going with it. And the fact that they had no idea how to emulate (sorry if its the wrong wording) transfer the games graphics/performance to the Nintendo console and had to contact the people to help with it, which causes lag and poor loading of the world. Whatever we saw on the first trailer or glimpse of the game, it wasn't here. All because of the changes done. I had second thoughts of the game...decided its not worth it, given how much I actually wanted to buy and give it a try since I love these types of game mechanics. The animation of the characters in the cutscenes are great, not perfect since its using the in game environment lighting, but the attention to give more personality to the character movement made it much much more charming to look at sometimes. (I'm looking at you Sonic Forces) Edit: The show was freakin great

Sega really doesn't get alternate universes. When Archie was adapting Sonic Unleashed and they had a crossover interrupt things, Ian said they told him he couldn't use Chip in the crossover because Chip was dead. He said they didn't seem to understand that the story of Sonic Unleashed hadn't happened yet/concluded in the comic and that it was a separate thing.

It's such a tragedy that this game could've been so much much much more, and it got further and further stomped into a shallow and bad smelling paste that only had a pathetic tenth of what they wanted to make. All because Sega get stifling them and making shitty business decisions. I remember seeing the first trailer and thought it looked cool, and then the final game had pretty much nothing like the trailer so yeah now I know why that is. And i'd love to see a video going over all the cut content of this game.

The scummy practices at SEGA when they themselves licensed the IP to a Third-Party Company for the intention of making a Spin-Off really remind me of something. It's almost exactly what Toho did to Tristar when they were making their Godzilla Movie. Tristar had acquired a license to make a Godzilla movie, set for release for Godzilla's 40th Anniversary in 1994. However, Toho kept putting increasing restrictions on the project, so much so that the production changed hands several times. Part of it was because Toho wanted Godzilla's Tristar Design to be "unique" so that "audiences wouldn't get confused," - more like they wanted to _distance_ their version of Godzilla as far from Tristar's movie as possible. Second, when the original script featured Godzilla fighting another giant monster - one that was an original Tristar creation - Toho immediately shut that down, and stated that if they wanted _another monster_ in their movie, it had to be one of Toho's creatures - preferably King Ghidorah, who comes with a Major Price-Tag. Toho was basically strong-arming the production of the movie to buy another license to _another_ of their characters. So in the end, Toho pretty much backed Tristar into a corner, forcing them to make a movie about a monster that didn't look like Godzilla and didn't act like Godzilla at all...And even though the movie was a Boxoffice Success, fans of the franchise didn't like it. So it seems kind of Scummy when Toho - who forced them to make all of these decisions - said in interviews that the movie took "The God out of Godzilla."

Being a modern Sonic franchise fan is like being a fan since childhood of a sports team that was once great but now is bad with so much potential: The team has a sentimental connection to you, so you buy tickets to every game and show up to every one with at least some hope that just *maybe* they can pull it off this time and turn things around for the season. You stick through every game until the end, only to be terribly hurt and disappointed by easily avoidable mistakes and wasted potential. The worst part is that you pick yourself up and remember the days when they used to be great, which causes you to slightly get your hopes up again for the next game. You show up again, and the cycle never ends.

7:15 It's bullshit like this why Sonic's universe feels so small and empty. The main characters are everything and the world around them can't contain anything of value. It's like it's just Sonic, Tails and Eggman on a Green Hill Zone island, floating in a white empty void. Assuming characters like Wave the Swallow or Sonic X's uncle Chuck are left out to keep it simple or retconned out of existence, does this mean literally every piece of technology in the series has been created by either Tails or Eggman??? So both or either is the main manufactorer of all technology in Sonic's world??? I guess it makes alot more sense now why they ditch the phrase "Mobius" and stick with "Sonic's world", the main characters really ARE the center of their entire universe.

Gimme dat deep dive. I got into the show a few months ago and finally discovered... well, exactly as you put it, the missed potential of Sonic Boom. It actually really saddens me that we'll probably never see that world again as they're never going to try to improve it and it's already been confirmed to be done with. I guess my biggest realistic concern at the moment is what is going to happen to Sticks? Because she has way too much personality and became such a part of the team in my eyes, they better not just pull a Marine on her P.S. I'm also done with giving Sega a pass. They are the sole reason the very franchise they're trying to sell big is not allowed to thrive
