No mention of the battle of Falkirk (Jan. 1746), an important Jacobite victory; the last uprising seems overly rushed and simplistic. And invoking "the divine right of kings" as a basis for Jacobitism seems a bit of a stretch. Probably suffers from attempting to throw too much into a mere 3 minutes.

PS: Outlander has a much to do with Jacobite history as The Sound of Music has to do with the Second World War.

"the divine right of kings" was the essence of the Jacobites' case. An utterly absurd position to take and thank God we Scots rounded on the empty-headed idiots. Shame we can't do the same to today's ScotNuts.

@@aaronaustin225 Of course it was. The whole point of the Revolution of 1688 was to assert the sovereignty of parliament. Various Jacobite fuckwits then tried to turn the clock back so they could have a divine monarchy again but, thankfully, failed.

What a tough decision. I'm half Scottish and raised Protestant in America. I would have been a Scottish Protestant nationalist.

A lot of the support came from opposition to the act of union. The Scottish Jacobites wanted to end the union and return to the three kingdom monarchy that existed from 1603-1707. During both the 1715 and 1745 risings James and Charles both officially dissolved the union after being declared king and regent of Scotland respectively. It's not quite as simple as calling it a war of independence because it was more complicated than that, however a Jacobite victory would result in a break up of the union (and a return to the previous arrangement of three Kingdoms with separate parliaments ruled by one king. This was popular with Scots and the Irish as well as some Anglicans in England because the British state had been increasingly centralised from 1688 onwards. The Irish obviously favoured a Catholic king but also saw the Stuart's as having rightful claim to the High Kingship of Ireland due to lineage. Scots generally opposed the Union, especially in the early years and 1715 was by far the largest rising and was declared with the express goal of ending the union. There were many other factors that motivated Jacobites and they often overlapped. There were very few Catholics in Scotland by the 1700s but there was a big divide between Presbyterians and Episcopalians though the split was not always clear cut. Episcopalians generally supported the Jacobite cause not only because of anti-union sentiments but also to reverse the establishment of the Presbyterian Kirk as the official church of Scotland. Conversely this is why most opponents of the Jacobites in Scotland were Presbyterians however there were also many presbyterians who per the Jacobites for other reasons. These reasons included an unease about the union, as many feared that just as in the 1640s there would be an attempt by the English to restore episcopalianism as the state religion of Scotland. Others were uneasy particularly in 1715 about having a Lutheran German King - important to remember that the hanoverians for much of their reign were also of a different religion to their subjects. The focus on Hanover also caused resentment among the English which is why there was more Jacobite activity in England in 1715 than in 45. The other thing to remember is that it was harder to stage a rising in England than in Scotland. The British troops were more abundant and government control was more established so many suspected Jacobites could be captured or subdued before organised resistance was established. Plus England since the end of the civil war was a much less martial society in the civilian sphere than in Scotland. So in other words it was harder to mobilise the Jacobites in England than it was in Scotland. Also by the end of the rising Lowlanders and scots speaking Eastern Highlanders were a majority in the army, not Gaels.

You might want to read the records on the Jacobites my dude ..as per 'Jacobites Gleanings from State Manuscripts: Short Sketches of Jacobites' by J. macbeth Forbes , all of the Jacobites taken prisoner after the Wars and taken to the American plantations were described as "black"persons (with few exceptions)

Well, it wasn't really a "glorious revolution". And the Jacobites were not crushed in Ireland at the Battle of the Boyne. James left for France to gain more support after completing a successful reargaurd action to get his forces away. With James gone, the Irish Jacobites fell back to the West, and fought for another year. They were crushed that Aughrim, where their commander was decapitated by a Williamite cannonball. As he was the only one who knew the plan of battle, the Irish Jacobites were slaughtered. About 7000 of them. Then the seige of Limerick occured, which led to the flight of the Wild geese, and the Brits breaking the Treaty of Limerick. Wait, that would be 20 minutes.

It's worth remembering how closely linked all these timelines were. I mean, the Salem Witch Trials were held at the same time as the original Glorious revolution, Quebec City was captured by the British Armies about 15 years after the last Jacobite revolt and George Washington was born before the second rebellion. Centralization like we see with modern nation states is actually much newer than many think.

Hang on. Are the Blackfyre rebellions in ASOIF based on the Jacobite rebellions?
@ArcticTemper8 жыл бұрын
Doubt it, the Jacobites were supporting House Stuart - who were displaced by William of Orange. The Blackfyres were the bastard-branch of House Targaryen. Smaller details may be based on this period of British history, but I doubt the overall concept it. Daenerys and her sons not being able to invade Westeros and being forced to find loyal supporters from within and win via revolt would be more like the Jacobite rebellions.
@AustenKime8 жыл бұрын
The Blackfyre Rebellions could just as easily be based on Harold Godwinsons brother tostig and his alliance with Harold Hardradda in 1066

@Catubrannos8 жыл бұрын
+Austen Kime Northern England is more catholic (old religion) and York was represented by the white rose. Jacobites were mostly catholic and represented by a white cockade. MacDonalds were catholic mostly and supported the Jacobites. Lannister colour is red, Lancastrian rose is red, they play the political game better and later joined the new religion of protestants. The protestant Campbells were loyal to the new religion over old cultural ties and consistently supported protestant causes staying closer to the centre of power than the more peripheral MacDonalds.

"Glorious Revolution" was the last successful invasion of Britain. The Empire era's favoured myth of never being invaded wrote that fact out.
@conscienceaginBlackadder4 жыл бұрын
@@keyvanff123 A military entry into a country against its government's resistance is an invasion, whatever balance of the body politic are on the invaders' side. Simon Schama vol 2: The critical event of 1688 is better described as the invasion it undoubtedly was, rather than as a "revolution". It had been contemplated by William in the Netherlands long before he had an official invitation. William was shrewd enough to know it would be a gamble. But by spring 1688 he had come to believe it would be worse not to embark on it. The controlling imperatives were all Dutch. It was 3 months before the enormous armada + its huge cargo of troops, many of them the creams of the Dutch army, were able to sail from Scheveningen. James now led what was left of his army into Wiltshire. But it was precisely the fact of the Prince of Wales, and the possibility that as time went on his legitimacy would seem more not less credible, that made William realise, with his peerless sense of timing, that if he failed to seize the moment, he would squander an advantage that might never return. So, with the Dutch Blues on the streets, he simply rejected every overture short of the crown itself.

This all lead to the eradication of an ancient richly cultured deep clan society that had fought and existed since before the roman ceasars tried to conquer them. The loss of an entire culture and lineage of people. Yet both your tone and selection of facts made it seem as if it was of no importance. In essence, you failed to mention any of what made the government forces horrific. Hangings, beheadings, loot. Many of the real reasons why the Jacobites fought were not mentioned and you made the government seems so unevil and basic with hee haw truly bad qualities. The attitude towards the men who fought and died for charlie seemed a little dissmisive as you failed to mention the countless years of hangings, beheadings, looting and forceful cultural takeover of poor Scotland.
