King George III didn't rap either (nor did Samuel Seabury), but that's because in the show, the revolution was portrayed through fast-paced rapping, and they were the old-fashioned slower melodies

i think the reason "the orphanage" hits us so hard is because throughout the entire musical they continuously remind us that alexander is an orphan. so at the very end when we have eliza opening up an orphanage and caring for orphans it just feels so right and beautiful and bittersweet.

The first lines of "Let me tell you what I wish I'd known when I was young and dreamed of glory. You have no control who lives who dies who tells your story" are from the song History Has Its Eyes On You, also sung by Washington. The concept of Eliza "putting herself in the narrative" first appeared in That Would Be Enough when she asked to be part of the narrative, and once again in Burn when she erased herself from the narrative. Eliza and Hamilton actually had 8 kids together, and the orphanage she created is still functioning today in New York.

Lin titled the show just “Hamilton” bc he felt it is equally about Alexander and Eliza. In fact, during the curtain call, usually the main character bows at center stage, But Alexander actually gives the center of the floor to Eliza for the bows.

After the war Hamilton refused his officers pension - partly because congress did not have enough to pay the soldiers (if I remember correctly) but I think maybe he didn't want to taint his legacy as a "war hero" by looking like he did it for money. Downside was he wasn't counting on dying young (47) and leaving Eliza and their kids without income. Eliza had to fight to get the right to his pension back but in the end they granted it to her (luckily). Eliza's wish was for her husband's story to be told and she asked three different people to write his biography, but no-one managed to complete it in her lifetime, unfortunately. One of their sons completed a biography a few years after she passed. She was very devoted to him right to the end and would often be seen standing by a bust of him they had in the home in her older years and saying "I want to see my Hamilton again". He did make mistakes and he was far from perfect, but it is still a love story.

Someone who knows more, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I also think they thought that Eliza's father would leave them a large inheritance when he died. However, no one really knew that he had donated a good portion of his wealth to the war, the Continental Army, and the young Nation - so there was far less there to divide among his children than they expected...

One of my favorite lines is when Eliza goes “I raise funds in DC for the Washington Monument.” To which Washington goes “She tells my story!” And Eliza counters with “I speak out against SLAVERY-” In the musical you’ll see Washington standing behind her making this face 😟 because Washington still owned slaves.

Hamilton is such a great musical. Something I found out, Philip was alive for 19 songs in the musical and he lived to be 19. Hamilton lived to be 47, and if you include the Lauren’s interlude, that adds up to 47 songs in the entire musical. If you wanted to continue to do musicals, I would suggest Newsies (the Broadway musical) just because the music is amazing and most of the time they’re dancing while singing (there is a recording of the Broadway musical on Disney plus as well). Also just anything Jeremy Jordan cause his vocals are insane.

Fun fact: That cool lyric by Madison was actually a paraphrasing of something Ron Chernow said to Lin. Chernow pointed to it as an example of how open and receptive Lin was to his input, which I think is just so cool. Edit: I also found myself not wanting it to end. I think for me, I got choked up because this song brought the realization that all these characters we'd grown to love in 2 hours and 40 mins were leaving us, and that the real people had already long since passed. "The orphanage" doesn't get me, but when she says Angelica is "buried in Trinity Church near you"--😭

I have to wonder if he wrote this song based on that one line from George Washington in History Has It's Eyes on You. Which song did he write first, or did he write them around the same time? I get chills whenever I hear it, because I know it's the only moment in the show that musically foretells the final song. And when Chris Jackson sings "She tells my story" in the middle of this song, that adds a whole other layer of emotion, especially with his delivery of the line. Miranda is a genius

Trinity Church, where the Hamiltons are buried, is in the shadow of the World Trade Center. On 9/11, lots of people sheltered in the church from the falling debris. The album leaves off the last bit of the show. Alexander takes Eliza to the front of the stage to show her the audience, and she gasps. Lin has never explained what that gasp means, but people have interpreted it as Eliza seeing Alexander's story being told to a modern day audience.

The thread that gives me chills is that Eliza wrote herself into the narrative when marrying Hamilton, wrote herself out of the narrative after his affair, but in the end she WROTE the narrative of his life! Wow! Fun Fact: Jefferson wouldn’t have been able to make the Louisiana Purchase without the financial system Hamilton set up! How did I not notice that the last time Eliza says "time" the instrumentals stop (just the chorus continues). Could it also mean the end of her "time"?

When you watch this, watch carefully. When she speaks about slavery, Washington bows his head in shame. At the end Lin is basically telling Eliza he is telling her story with one look. I suppose that is why it is called Hamilton. He is telling both their stories.

Yeah, she lost two children, even though only one died. Philip's younger sister, Angelica Hamilton, had a mental breakdown after Philip's death and had to be given into the care of a doctor for the rest of her life. She might not have died, but sadly she was lost to her family.

And yeah, Eliza held on to a really formidable age in those times. She died at the age of 97. The lady lived so long that she was a contemporary of Washington, but also saw the rise of a young senator from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln.

I think you missed out on an opportunity to talk about how this musical has been at times complex and intricate and details, but it finishes in unison and a capella, which feels so simple for this blockbuster show, but really makes it all the more powerful. If you're looking for suggestions for other musicals to react to, I'd recommend Come From Away. It is also based on a true story (the grounded planes during the 9/11 attacks), and has a lot of songs that don't necessarily fall into the category of classic musical theatre. It's a Canadian show and takes lots of influence from Newfoundland culture and folk songs. Even if you don't want to react to it, maybe just look into it on your own it's a beautiful, powerful show which tells a story you may not know about.

Philip died and the daughter that is mentioned in the play Angelica, went crazy after losing her brother Philip, she never recovered. Eliza was actually pregnant when Philip died and they named that baby Philip in honor of their first born. They had 8 kids total. I really hope you can react to live performance next and then dive into the full play 🙏🏻

Another fun fact is that in the show. Everyone is wearing white. Only Burr, Eliza, Angelica and Alexander are wearing colors because they are the answers to the questions. Who lives? Aaron Burr survived the duel. Who dies ? Alexander dies in the duel. Who tells our story? Eliza and Angelica continues tell Alexander’s Hamilton story, and Eliza tells the story of George Washington and the rest of soldiers. Overall the scene in the show is very emotional and I cry every-time I watch it.

By the end of Jefferson’s 2nd term, it was clear that the US was heading towards the War of 1812 with England. James Madison was a less domineering man in stature, hadn’t served in the Revolution. Had he been alive, there’s a decent chance Hamilton, the war hero, would have been elected President especially since Washington was deceased at this point. If you’re thinking about the two term limit, that was the precedent Washington set but there was no law about it until after FDR. Had he been alive and had they asked, he might have served again, for the sake of directing US troops during the war.
