@Mtbdrum It wasn't Athens that started the games. It was a place near Sparta, called Olympia, where the Olympics started. Even if Athens was the town to start the Olympics, I can't understand why Athens is separated from Greece. Athenians used the Greek language, participated in greek customs and, generally, had a greek identity. Therefore, in any case, the Olympic games are a Greek creation. Congratulations to the British people for their extraordinary opening ceremony.

I wouldn't be so sensitive. He was only thanking Britain for their contribution to the modern Olympic movement...of course everyone knows that the Olympics originated in Greece.

Greece? It was Athens, the small city state, that created the Olympics. Spartans were only intressted in war and the rest of the small states that made up the contemporary Greece were domestic farmers. So, we should thank Athens and the Romans.

Not enough French in his speech. He represents the Olympic movement so it should be at least 50% in French, the official language of Olympics.

Cant be easy though to make a speech in a language which is not natural to you
