Jagged Little Pill will reopen the Theatre Royal Sydney in September 2021, it has been revealed.
The venue, owned by Trafalgar Entertainment, will welcome audiences back with the Australian premiere of the Tony Award-nominated piece later this year, with Sydney audiences set to be the first outside of Broadway to experience the musical.
After previews in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Jagged Little Pill opened at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York on December 5, 2019. The musical features a book by Diablo Cody, music by Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard, direction by Diane Paulus, choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt.
The creative team also includes scenic designer Riccardo Hernandez (Parade), costume designer Emily Rebholz (Dear Evan Hansen), lighting designer Justin Townsend (Moulin Rouge!), sound designer Jonathan Deans (Waitress), and video designer Lucy Mackinnon (Spring Awakening) alongside hair, wig, and make-up designer J Jared Janas (Sunset Boulevard). Production management is by Ira Mont (The Producers).
It was nominated for 15 Tony Awards and recently won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It will be produced in Australia by Vivek J Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David, Eva Price, Howard Panter for the London-based Trafalgar Entertainment and GWB Entertainment.
Morisssette said: "We are all very excited knowing that our show Jagged Little Pill will be making its way to the Theatre Royal Sydney this year! This show has been a vehicle of healing for so many of us throughout its journey and knowing we are coming your way is such amazing news after these intense 12 months across the world. Can’t wait to share this blood sweat and tears musical with you...as Australia has always held a very special place in my heart."
Panter said: "Trafalgar Entertainment and Theatre Royal Sydney are committed to ensuring that Sydney will be the first destination for the best theatre in the world, and we are thrilled to announce that the first production to open the theatre is straight from Broadway, Jagged Little Pill. Alanis Morrisette is so beloved in Australia and we can’t think of a better fit to launch this stunning fully restored new venue in the heart of the CBD Sydney."
Full dates are to be revealed, with the piece set to play a nine-week season in Australia. We don't know much, but we'd hazard a guess that further plans for the show are likely to be unveiled soon, given what Panter told us in an interview recently.

Good news: they’ve casted Maggie McKenna, a non-binary performer, as Jo in the Australian production! It gives me hope that the producers are making good on their recent promises. Plus, I’ve seen Maggie live; and let me tell you, they are incredible!

@@rockstarhenz Wow! Twice in one week? You are definitely living your best life! I’m not going to lie: I’d kind of like to see Maggie play Jo on Broadway sometime soon (since I’ve made the decision to wait until Lauren Patten steps out of the show. I still think she’s incredibly talented, but there’s just too much stigma right now.). I know it’s not exactly plausible; but a guy can dream.

I saw this at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach last night. With little expectation going in (it was a surprise outing) and only being familiar with the music itself, I was totally blown away. I was lucky that my teenaged daughter asked if she could come with us and we were able to get another ticket. (The lady at the box office was fabulous and got us seats together despite it being sold out). To say that the show was incredible does it no justice. As a frequent flyer at Broadway shows, this one tops the list with heart stopping performances, minimalist yet very imaginative sets and all very cleverly done. My daughter really enjoyed it too and the story speaks to both generations so made for a good converstion on the way home. A must see.

I hope this show will still have a long run, because the show is really good and tells a story that needs to be told and people need to see it. About the controversy, it doesn't really have anything to do with the show, Jo being cis or non-binary doesn't change anything to the story. It's just they should've adressed it differently, they should've just said "We tweaked the script a little bit because we didn't feel it was right for a cis gender actress to olay a non-binary character." Which is acceptable from a marketing perspective because we all know what critics had to say when a straight man played a gay broadway actor. All they can do now to justify their mistakes is making sure that after Lauren Patten decides to leave the show and they need a replacement, that the roll will be played as a non-binary character by a non-binary character.
@KingdomHeartsFan3211
@KingdomHeartsFan3211 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I don’t necessarily want them to get rid of Lauren Patten straight away, but once she leaves the show, I think they should revert to the ART script and cast Ezra Menas as Jo. I’ve listened to their version of “You Oughta Know”, and they’re definitely an amazing singer and they seem like an amazing actor.

I have multiple reactions to this. First, as someone who was the age of these performers when the album came out, it's a little hard for me, visually at least, to relate to them, because now, at my present age, they look like "kids" and I'm like "But you guys weren't part of this generation..." or something. The dancing is fantastic. I'm sure the show is great, my brother and his wife saw it. I would just need to adjust my brain to sync up the 90s era that I experienced back then with these youngsters today.

So someone please explain the problem for someone who does not know this Broadway show but knows the songs inside out. What’s the issue and who is jo and Lauren, are these characters or thier real names?
@livieyuh
@livieyuh 3 жыл бұрын
Lauren Patten plays a Character Joanne (Jo) Taylor in the Jagged Little Pill Broadway Musical! Lauren Patten (a cis woman) has said multiple times in her past tweets that Jo is supposed to be representing trans/enby/genderqueer people and how Jo shouldn’t be referred to with “she/her”. So technically Lauren said that she’s playing a non binary as a cis woman. When the writers decided to change Joannes Identity (changed to a cis women) they made Lauren take down the tweets to make it seem like Joanne was never Non-Binary. fast forward to now, Jagged Little Pill made an stupid apology saying how Joanne was never written as non binary and how we were in the wrong for attacking them. While there is so much evidence including Old Recordings of the show before it hit broadway and the tweets. it’s kind of a messy situation and really hard to explain. But, if you go on @jaggedlittletransphobes on instagram there is A LOT of great info on there!!

@christopheryoung4563
@christopheryoung4563 3 жыл бұрын
Ezra was the understudy when Jo was still NB and they just kept everyone’s covers in the transfer. Ezra and Lauren play the role completely differently and Ezra does it better as Ezra is someone struggling with Gender meanwhile Lauren is someone struggling with Sexuality. But after lockdown, they should make Jo non binary

I see people say this brings up so many issues that should be seen and does a good job. I disagree. It brings up things that should be talked about, but leaves about 90% of it in the dark, never to be seen again. They never address most of it on any worthy or needed level. They try to cover far too much and thus they approach nothing, and they praise poor actions with little consequence and we never see repercussions or growth, we're only told... if that. (Aside from the mother, but it's played like a "Lawl that was crazy wasn't it" - poor coping mechanism) Meanwhile it seems to create conflict solely to fit the songs, with the songs dictating how one should feel without pushing the narrative forward. The only song that DOES is predator, and that was written FOR the musical. Was overall disappointed with how the songs were incorporated with this messy, unhinged poor excuse for a plot. The parents and Bella were all I cared about, because the issues of everyone else were either lackluster, all over the place, or it didn't make sense.
