Why is that the name? Taylor named her fifth studio album, "1989", after her year of birth, therefore, that was the name given to her forth headlining tour, in support of this album. and Taylor named her album "1989" because it symbolized two things about the album's direction: 1. That the music in the album is inspired by 80's synth-pop 2. And that this is her first album to be promoted as a pop album. (Her previous album, Red, can be interpreted as pop but it wasn't promoted as such.) Her switch from country to pop showed a rebirth of her artistry, so that's why she used her birth year.
