The Night lords are one of those fascinating legions that differs so much from marine to marine. Especially the three night lord books convey this feeling of comradery but hate for each other and disgust for themselves so well. Probably one of my favorite especially the lack of focus on the Dark gods.

Him being unable to easily fall into merth with others and yet being lighthearted and joking all the time is no paradox; I can relate because I myself smile easy, joke more often than not at work and appreciate jokes all the time... but I gradually disconnect and distance from my contemporaries at some point as I continue to refine truth and they seem to stay where they are, reason being they all love lies and use/rely on them to be driven and to be happy. They lie to themselves and each other and consequently never have sight of the bigger picture. I won't compromise with the truth and will not be party to deliberate lies so I end up detatching. Lacking empathy has nothing to do with it either as I relate easily to where people are coming from just as the character Sevatar is a psyker if sorts and feels what others feel... the alienation comes from rejecting lies so as to remain 'aware' and proactive with regards to what needs to be done, just as Sevatar is the only reliable Nightlord; in Prince of Crows he's always the one taking care of business and cares not for petty egos. It's not that he doesn't care about others, it's that a man cannot be LOST in merth, enamoured with lies or overly sensitive of feelings if he is to remain sober and do the right thing. Delusion makes men victims, hence the path of the warrior is the path of truth... Sevatar is therefor the perfect archetype of the warrior. You'll see throughout Prince of Crows, Sevatar never once tells a lie or entertains untruth... He doesn't even lie to men he's plotting to kill, which is extraodinary in a legion who's way of war is so indirect and reliant on suprise... but as with other Dembski-Bowden stories, the paradoxical contrast is only superficial and melts away as the details are revealed; as with the Black Legion who's defining feature is actually loyalty. Aaron Dembski-Bowden has a lot of wisdom and his 40k books are the best of the lot. He's great at using these characters who seem paradoxical in contrast with their legions' extremities to help the reader relate to that legion... in the end that character turns out to be the quintessence of that legion, just in a more humanized, relatable form. It's a genius way of fleshing out and grounding the over-the-top, cartoonish backstories of 40k. Another trope of his is that he ends up making these famed captains the betters and more perfected versions of their repective fathers, which I find fascinating: -Sevatar is genuinely just where his father fell into psychosis and became subjective and arbitrary -Abaddon becomes a real leader where Horus forsook his sons for ambition without even realizing it -Kharn embodies brotherhood where Angron left the concept on Nuceria *By the way I'm a soldier and nearly all the men I know are soldiers, so the way I related Sevatar to my own situation is not really out of context.
