The Carmudgeon Show

Күн бұрын

On this episode of The Carmudgeon Show, Jason and Derek discuss the future of Jaguar-the iconic automotive brand struggling to survive in today's market. What brand decisions have made a negative impact on Jaguar Land Rover in recent years, and what problems must be solved as the brand moves into 2023 (and prepares for an electric future?)
All this and more, brought to you by the Hagerty Podcast Network.

One of the reasons Jaguar's interiors were so amazing and RR / Bentley level is because they used to use Connolly Brothers Leather, which was the leather supplier for RR / Bentley, as well as the seats in the House of Parliament (as well as Ferrari, amongst others).

I sell Jaguars, and oof, this is so very true. The LR part gets all the attention, while Jaguar is endangered. But the less attention we get from JLR, the more endangered! The I-Pace is such a wonderful Jaguar, completely normal luxury and handling, just oddly quiet, and that's certainly a wagon instead of SUV. Anecdotally, I've noticed that the customers who have the most reliable Jaguars (usually in service for regular maintenance) are those who drive high miles and treat their Jags like sports cars.

The F-Type (especially the R) is not competition for a Cayman/ Boxster, what it is really is a Hellcat that can read and does yoga. Also on the V6 being the V8 with two cylinders removed means that the manual which was only available on the V6 will bolt directly to the V8 with no modifications. I don't know if anyone has done it yet, but it's something I'm considering as a future project.

I used to work at Jag. In US focus groups, when you asked about Jagwarrr, people would either lean forward an exclaim "beautiful cars!" and then lean back and cross their arms and say "but man they're unreliable". Or the opposite reaction, unreliability mentioned first and then something positive about styling. It was kind of irrational though at times, one guy had two S-TYPEs on lease one after the other with zero problems, but wouldn't consider an XK because of "reliability". I always maintained that the supercharged saloons (sorry, sedans) were the best Jags... trying to sell front-engined GT cars as sports cars was like pushing water uphill against Porsche... trying to sell 'normal' Jags against BMW et al, ditto. It was only the supercharged sedans that had the true expression of Jaguar duality... luxurious and wafty on one hand, taught, powerful and dynamic (when you were in the mood) on the other. The last XJ in 5.0 s/c Supersport form, not XJR, is what sits on my driveway. And yes, it's currently broken 🤣

I agree with a lot of these points, but judging from some of the misinformation in this episode it really seems like you guys haven't had much experience in recent Jaguar models. F-Type is down to a V6 Jason? Since when? They ditched the v6 and only sell the bonkers supercharged v8. And Derek admitted to not having driven a Jag since 2004, so how valid is his take? Also, the XF interior is pretty much IDENTICAL to modern Land Rover Interiors, albeit with a little bit more plastic. Likening it to Daewoo is flat out dishonest hyperbole...

The car no one remembers even while it is still in production. I would love to hear your opinions on the IPace as it is actually a fantastic car overall that was so poorly marketed it could only be a flop. Fast? Check, Gorgeous? Check. While I agree Jaguar lacks an identity and it’s interior need the LR updates, I completely disagree about the F Type. I sold my 991 Carrera and picked up a rear drive V8 R Ftype and couldn’t be happier. The 911 is too good, no personality. The F Type is drop dead gorgeous and personality for miles. Also has twice the HP as a base 911. I grin from ear to ear every time I hit the accelerator. Best rear end.

As I'm currently on my second Jaguar (an F Type here in the US after previously having an XE in the UK) I can't disagree with most of what you are saying. I will say one thing about the F Type versus the XK and this is circumstantial based only on my own experiences but the F Type probably has a much lower average age of buyer than the XK did (I'm guessing the average age is somewhere between 35-50 instead of the 50-70 of the XK). Personally I think Jaguar should become more of a niche brand rather than trying to directly face off against BMW/Audi/Mercedes with the LR of JLR providing the volume.

I've had 2 X150 XKRs and a Ferrari, and you're right about the average age. But I'm only 36, and I love everything about the XKR. I especially love that they're more rare than F-Types - production numbers over the 9 year run is a good deal lower than the ~7 year run so far of the F-Type. There's just nothing else like them. I'd like to get an F-Type R in the future at some point but I see it as such a different car that I don't consider it an upgrade or successor.

Interesting podcast, very much enjoyed it. I cannot argue the points the two raised regarding a) reliability - fondest memory of the XJS was up on the hoist at the Jag dealer, we seemed to share ownership 60/40 (dealer biased) b) interiour - before the interiour of the 80/90's cosseted you, now with the F type, it urges you out of the car c) build quality - significantly better in the last 5 years than when I had the XJ series 3 and XJS All that said, fab to drive, when it did. Thanks for the rundown memory lane, now back to the garage to fix the wiring harness on the V12.

Pre-pandemic 2020, I was shopping for a replacement to my E61 wagon. Being a wagon fan, the XF Sportbrake was at the top of my list. Checked all the boxes. Found one, less than 2 years old, 4k, came with a 6 year warranty, full loaded and a good color combo(not perfect, that would have been blue). Practically brand new for nearly 50% off. Test drove went well, but I had driven an Audi S7 the day before. The Jag was adequate, but the Audi wowed (not just based on the extra power, because I would have figured out how to swap the full V8 in). It was all based on the interior. This was their special interior and it was meh compared to the Audi. 3 years with the Audi and I don't regret it. It's got enough wagon in it with the hatchback to work for me.

My dads got a last generation XJR and it’s actually been pretty great. A few small issues with the infotainment, but it’s never left him stranded, and although the XJ was an S class competitor I’d describe it as feeling about a thousand pounds lighter. 5.0 Supercharged V8 also makes good noises. He’s also got a 96 XKS (the 6 not the 12) and it’s been absolutely wonderful. NOT a sports car, but it’s faster than my FRS in a straight line if I don’t launch it, and will cruise at 100mph with literally 0 effort at all. It’s also been super reliable. Could be we have two good examples, but my dads friends who have the supercharged v8 in their cars, as well as other xks owners agree that on the motor and transmission side, they’re pretty bulletproof.

I think you guys did the F-Type very dirty by saying it doesn't "drive like it looks", and then giving a 718 Boxster as an example. I thought the 911 comparison that everyone has made since it was launched was misguided, but comparing it to a Boxster is so much more illogical it almost sounds like you're intentionally trying to make the F-Type look bad in all cases. It really does not look like a Boxster or 911 competitor whatsoever. Jaguar was never trying to make the F-Type a back-to-basics sports car. Think of it as a Lexus LC500/BMW M850i competitor and it makes total sense, which it looks very similar to.

A bit of history on Jaguar's early development of disc brakes on the C-type: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYfRqoWXbJ54d5I And for the record, Jaguar's reputation for reliability was pretty dodgy well before the late XJ6. At age 70, my grandfather bought a 1963 XK-E (!). That car couldn't go by the dealership without needing to turn if for repairs. It epitomized the many jokes about Lucas electronics. My mom had to drive it once when dad was in a nearby hospital for a power saw accident. She was doing 100 and said trim bits were flying off the car - but it would do 100! But, damn, the E-type was just sex on wheels - in the class of the 250 GTO for pure looks.

As you said, the Jags that built the legacy offered cutting edge capabilities and technology for less than competitors. Today, that would probably be an EV more range and performance than Tesla, and a better chassis and interior, for about 80% of the price. I think there was a lot of truth in this episode. We had an '05 S type (4.2l engine). It was a fantastic car, no reliability problems with the drivetrain (although it did have a couple issues with the heater core after 150k miles). Drove it to 270k miles, until someone rear-ended it (while parked) and caused all sorts of electronic issues. Ultimately it was just going to cost more to fix than it was worth. It was a phenomenal car for driving the family on long trips at high speed. Could cut a 4 hour drive down to 3:15.

Jaguar is probably my favorite car brand. Affordable performance and cutting edge engineering. Well, it was that through the 40's through the 60's. It seems such a huge waste to let the brand die but I do not see it recovering. Many have tried and really screwed it up each time. The lack of reliability, to me is the killer. It they could have approached Toyota levels of production engineering and process I think the company would have a great chance of thriving, but it is all too late now and that makes me truly sad.

Speaking as a Brit and a Jaguar owner (a proper Jaguar, not a Hyundai Lookalike). The reason Jaguar is failing is that they deliberately went away from their design heritage. If you produce cars that look like Hyundais then you cannot charge premium prices for them. Simple. Even the top of the range XJ looked like an old Ford Granada from late 80's early 90's. So if they themselves don't give a damn why should we?

Agreed. Jaguar made uniquely beautiful cars through the 1960s, but the recent XF and XE look generic. And Jason and Derek are correct - Land Rover has an enviable reputation in the SUV segment. Down to a supercharged V6? Isn't the only engine this year in the F type the V8 available as RWD or AWD?

In 2 occasions, I thought about buying a Jaguar in recent years: a F Pace in 2016 and a XE IN 2019, In both occasions, I walked away after seeing the interior. In he case of the XE, the comparison with a Genesis G70 is downright embarrassing

It's Jag.. wait 3 minutes and someone will buy it... oh wait, it's owned by Tata with Land Rover with a left over taste of Ford. Jag is a more talked about brand than TVR, but has the same track record. "The Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary was struggling by 2019 and Tata Motors wrote down its investment in JLR by $3.9 billion. Much of the financial problem was due to a 50% drop in sales in China during 2019" Correction, It's another Buick... where the existence said brand is dictated by China's sales (Hence why Pontiac went poof in favor of Buick)

Haha, I may have had that same X-type as Jason as a rental in Boston in 2004. That period NeverLost was like 8 bucks a day, but you could upgrade to prestige collection for 10 (at least from corporate rate) and all of those had it.

I've got a 2018 XE Diesel that I've had for a year and a half now. Got it with 22,000 miles I absolutely Love it, but it went into the shop for a coolant hose and thermostat housing replacement at 40,000 miles. Now at 63,220 miles I'm waiting on a diagnostics and estimate. Turbo may have gone. If so I could be looking at an engine replacement. The sound it made as it suddenly shut down isn't caused by something simple.

@jamesrobert4106 I called Jag USA, and after going back and forth with them for about 4 months or so, they warrantied the complete engine replacement. It was at the shop for a little over a month, and now it's back home. I've only put about 1,200 miles on the new engine and everything is good so far. I will be doing extra oil changes on this engine just to try to help make it last. Apparently, these engines can build carbon easily, and the carbon works its way down into the oil and starts destroying the rod bearings. I still absolutely love this car, and so far, I haven't had any other issues with it.

We are all profoundly sad that the episode numbers exceed the number of fingers and toes you have Jason. That's no reason to hate on Derek because he can count past 20. He is adorable, car obsessed AND can count. Heck, that puts him to the top of my "guys I'd like to date" list. Next time you feel the urge to hate on Derek for counting episodes remember that letting an adorable man count doesn't make you less adorable. We love you both. A few of us less platonic than we should.

I think you’re being too harsh on Jaguar (particularly the F Type). I’ve driven many fast cars over my lifetime including the the v6 and v8 f types. Porsche’s certainly are more dialed in and planted than an f type but almost to there detriment. Porsche’s have become so capable that they seen sanitized (meaning they are not fun to drive unless you get them to there limit which requires very high speeds. Basically they’re only fun on the track. F types and cars like the f type are way more fun at lower speeds.

I don’t have a problem with 120 degree V6’s or the Alfa Romeo Busso V6…. But past that, I agree, Inline 6 is just far superior power delivery. Packaging can be an issue, but that’s why you build the car around the engine when it’s planned

For LeMans Porsche 19, Audi 13; Ferrari 9; Jaguar 7; Bentley 6 - As owner of 2 Jags (04 XJ; 69 E) I agree. In the 70s and 80's they were the cash cow for British Leyland. All the money they made was sunk into the rest of BL line. The rest of the line was a money pit of labor unrest. During the 70s the money taken to support MG Triumph Austin should have been spent on new engines, throwing out the long stroke tax dodging design for a more modern short stroke design. I was hopeful that the electric XJ would be a winner. Then the CEO decided sedans were dead and cancelled the car after the design was finished. Sedans do seem dead but in the electric space I think they can more be than competitive. The lower frontal area of a sedans will allow a longer range than SUVs providing a compelling reason to for sedans. Now that the CEO has been canned lets see if they can pull out of the dive they are in.

min 38-39. (they are talking about the 8 cylinder 6 piston.) What Jag-you-are should have done was make a 2 c. 2 p. Engine that could plug/ fit into the backside of another 2c2p engine in the first place instead. Can any auto make/engine maker make this a reality, in physical form?

I’ve wanted an F-type since it came out. Haven’t had the money to buy new so I wouldn’t be able to support them. Also would question at the price point whether I should’ve bought a corvette.

The shooting of Tupac Shakur that lead to his death happened while he was sitting in a 1996 BMW 750iL complete with a naturally aspirated V12. That exact same car is currently for sale for $1,750,000 on Hemmings, complete with the bullet holes that were never fixed…. I’m surprised a wealthy rapper hasn’t bought it yet as a display piece… figured I’d mention it since you brought up the car on the podcast 😉👍🏼

You really hit the nail on the head with Genesis. I absolutely love my GV70 Prestige 3.5T, it's absolutely the nicest car I've ever been in. At 1125 miles my transmission control module failed, and with all of the luxury brand hype I didn't think it'd be a big deal. Turns out I was just a Hyundai customer, it's been sitting at the dealership for a month and hadn't even been looked at. It's now finally being fixed because I finally was able to speak to a service manager just last week after informing the dealership I was going to Lemon Law it. Now they're actually trying to fix it and my parts should be in the end of this week. The service experience for me has been a nightmare, and even corporate really did nothing to help out. If I wasn't so in love with the car I would definitely be Lemon Lawing it. I understand that things break, I'm not upset that I had issues with the car, it's worth it, but when you buy a $70k vehicle and get a budget Hyundai service experience it's a huge problem. When more dedicated Genesis dealers start to pop up it hopefully won't be a problem anymore, but it definitely is now. I'm on the forums and it seems like most have a service experience that's to be expected, but a luxury brand should be providing a luxury service experience for everyone.

Seriously guys. It was only a couple years back Jag made the fastest 4 door around the ring, and it still hasn't been beaten. I have one. I also have an xkr-s GT. That's pretty fun. They ABSOLUTELY still make excellent sports cars, just very low volume. Come over to Japan, I'll let you drive them! I've already got one other youtuber planning to :)

The XF had a incredible interior compared to another car at that price point in 2008. The issue is they don’t refresh over cycles and over manufacturers catch up. An 08’ Jag is too similar to an 15” Jag and that’s good for the used market but not for brand new customers

SUVs turning to wagons trend is already happening. The latest RAV4 is basically a wagon on stilts. Renault Kadjar, RR Velar, there's no turning away from the fact it's a kick ass body type ;) Oh, and electric cars are becoming modern minivans when you think about it. Two-box instead of one, but still.

I don’t think the problem with Jag is themselves but their competition. As a company who competes with BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche you have to have the R&D budget to play. I think the F-Type is the only Jag that enthusiasts really love now.

F pace does really well actually. It's been Jaguar's best selling vehicle since launch. As for the reliability, most of the people complaining about them have never actually owned the vehicle. It's all just hear-say...fake news.
