My jaguar hasn't broken down or shown a fault code now for 5 months! Mind you as its a convertible and its winter it has been in storage all that time. I love that car! Used to be a Porsche man but now I'm a convert to the F-Type so much so that I'm buying another one, a Coupe. My wife askes "is that in place of the other one then?" - Silly question that. No its as well as!!!!

Hey just to let you know reguarding the rear differential, there's a yellow plastic breather tube on the top of the differential that will get plugged up with crud, when that happens the pressure in the differential builds up when you drive it hard and than pops the main seal in the front of the differential causing you to lose fluid and your differential. You just have go in with something like a paper clip and give that breather tube a root canal.
@MrGB_UK

I own an XFR and an F-Type R - both are very reliable. That stated, the issues you cite have absolutely hit the F-Type… replaced o2 sensors multiple times and had to replace catalytic converter on one side at 14k miles. As you mentioned. They’re all exhaust system problems. The other issue I’ve experienced is that the car battery can die after using the ODB2 port for emissions tests - I’ve learned this is because the power management system doesn’t turn off - it’s a software glitch…. The fix is to unhook the battery for a few minutes and then hook back up and it will reset

Very informal 2nd part MrGB. I have a few things to add if I may, firstly the panel gap problem is mostly caused by improper closure, always close clamshell bonnets from front centre rather than from either side. Secondly the low battery problem when things start playing up, simply disconnect the battery in the boot (don't forget the f type has two) leave disconnected for a couple of minutes then re connect giving it a re-boot, problem solved. Thirdly Throw the OEM cats away and get yourself some 200 cell sports cats you wont regret it.
@MrGB_UK
@MrGB_UK 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, and for the comment Dave. The clam shell is definitely closed, but I certainly agree that it’s not the easiest to close properly! Interesting point about the two batteries. I think that’s only the earlier models, if I’m not mistaken? AFAIK, the latter models only have the one in the boot. As for the OEM cats, I couldn’t agree more. It will definitely be my approach if I have further issues. Happy driving!

These guides are very informative and quite honestly has eased my fear about grabbing an F type. Hopefully by early next year I can purchase one before June of next year. The engine, the sound, the looks, the experience of the car is worth the price no matter what. It was either this or an M6 and unfortunately at the time someone nabbed both before I had the chance. But now that your putting these videos out, it's allowing me to make a more informed purchase and giving an idea of life with the vehicle. Great work friend 😎👍

On trickle chargers: we have 4 cars, all of which park at home with a trickle charger attached & the ones I use also recondition the battery. The reason for this, as pointed-out on Car SOS, is that if not on a trickle charger the battery actually starts to deteriorate after a couple of days. I used one of my chargers to recondition a dying battery on a neighbours car in January 2021 & the same battery is still in the car. Certainly worth £30(ish) to maintain battery life.

.........and my depression continues. This just screams "STAY AWAY" to me and yet here I am again looking at more reasons for me to learn how I will never have one of these in my garage. I just love the design. Wish I could get the shell and interior of the F type and then gut it with all new mechanical parts,....lol. Great job once again on the video and full details behind potential problems with these cars. You are also correct when saying its not fair to pin many of these issues to just the Jag as ANYTHING mechanical (with time) WILL eventually break down. Only problem is when it happens to expensive luxury vehicles,..the repair costs are equally as expensive in most cases.....unless you can get under the cars yourself and do the repairs.

Panel gap, I would say there are a lot of people not understanding the way to open and close the hood/bonnet properly! You should always open by lifting as centre as possible, not by the corner or side.. closing, placing your hands on the hood/bonnet vents and close squarely straight down. Gabs are created by opening and closing by a twisting effect.
@MrGB_UK
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
Thats a great tip! It’s quite uncommon for a front-hinged bonnet and I guess a lot of people will never have encountered one or how to close one before. Thanks for the comment!

I asked about the panel gap on the day I bought my 2016 F-Type. The dealer mumbled something like it’s supposed to be that way. Well, my car was “tapped” on the right side by a Ford 350 going 5 miles an hour. End story: 10,000 dollars later after the panel was replaced and properly aligned I have no gap. PS: Insurance covered.

In addition to the battery voltage Degradation, I would only add that is also a good idea to make annual ground point cleaning and corrosion preventing with simple and cheap petroleum jelly. It's not just a Jaguar issue as I also do this preventive measure on my Fiesta. It's a universal issue of modern cars and electronic technology.

I don’t want to jinx myself, but as a word of encouragement to fellow F Type owners I own a 2016 V6 Jag F Type with 45,000 on her and I have had no issues. I think that it is important to note that F Type owners need to be cognizant of the fact that these are GT cars and not track cars. It’s not a Porsche. It was designed for longer trips with the ability to haul ass if you need to. I believe if you drive them this way they reward you with reliability versus tracking them. Of course this is just my opinion but so far so good. Drive safe all.

First thank you for some of best informative F-Type videos I can find on You Tube! As a perspective buyer I have a couple of questions. Do you know exactly what year the exhaust update is included from the manufacturer? Also is there a way to delete the update if I was to buy a previous model that had it done? To me the pop's and crackles are the selling point for me.
@MrGB_UK
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
I’m glad it’s been helpful for you and thanks for the comment. The exhaust update came as standard on the face lifted models from 2018 onwards (not the new shape with the new headlights, but the 2018 refresh). There is no way of removing the software update without having your ECU remapped. You can tell if the car has had the software update, by putting the car in dynamic mode and then turning it off. When you turn it back on (straight away) if it is still in dynamic mode, you are safe and do not have the dreaded update

If the battery volts are a little low, surely this is ONLY a problem prior to starting the engine…..once the engine is started the Alternator should supply a sufficient voltage level to run the Ignition and Ancillaries at the correct voltage, and Charge the battery…… if the voltage levels are to low to power any component in the car correctly while the engine is running, this is surely an Alternator problem, not the battery.

Discovered there is a bug/feature with the bms when the obd connector is used (e.g during a service) it can get confused. Yes... I am also looking for an F-Type (most likely an "R"...). Unfortunately I am chasing a metal-green one with either brown or black interior. Not that easy. What you explain does not really scare me. On the catalytic failures... is there also known about catastrophic engine failure? I heard that if cats break (and I really mean that they break - crumble to pieces), debris can even reach comustion chambers of the engine. Anything like that known? Or is it just that they break?` Did I miss it - how much is one catalytic converter for the F-Type R?

Thanks for watching and commenting Mat. That colour combo sounds absolutely stunning! I would love a BRG F-Type with the Tan brown interior. Pure class! I've not heard of a lot of cases of catastrophic engine failure. I think one or two cases have surfaced on the FB groups, but out of a few dozen thousand cars, thats not a lot. Huge factors, such as environment, servicing, care etc need to be considered when looking at engine failure. I can't say I've heard of the catalytic components working their way back into the engine. The exhaust gases flow outwards, so it feels as if it would be hard/impossible for them to go 'up-stream' I paid a shade over £1800 for 1 catalytic replacement (JLR main dealer prices). Aftermarket ones are half this (sports cats) Happy driving and thanks for watching!

@@MrGB_UK This is basically true - and it is also not. Also I do not know if this is really a thing for the Jag Engines - this is why I asked. It is perfectly possible and the reason for that is either EGR or the internal version of that (I think this is also used by Jag) which is working with valve overlap (intake/ exhaust). Unfortunately I do not find proper explanation for that (at least not in english language) other than a facebook vid from Bamford Rose on topic "Explain Catalyst failure on V12 engines? - QOTW #9" (I write this that detailed because I do not know if I can just post a link/URL here so you can easily find it, just copy and paste it to google)... he is an Aston guy but the problem can exist on any brand/make/model. So this is not my phantasy... a pal of mine had such an issue on a Subaru engine. It is known on Aston, too and I think I read about it also in Porsche Forums. As said... any brand/ mode may be effected, if EGR or Internal EGR (valve overlap) is applied to the engine. On top of what Bamford Rose is explaining I also read about resonance frequencies in the volume of the exhaust gas, it is not really flowing, it is more waving. Either way... This is why I just wanted to know if it is known to Jags as well - as you already mention, that cats fail more frequently my guess was "oh... maybe those have catastrophic engine failures to CAT debris as well?".

In the US at least, the O2 sensors are covered by something like an 8-10 warranty (due to being part of the emissions system). As a result, owners "should" be able to have the dealer replace them for free until that time is up.

Ok, a lot of issues, which are not tragic. I dont really care about panel gaps and o2 sensors. It would be more important to know the cost of a timing replacement and the interval it has to be done.... On an Audi S4 it costs 4-6k.... While a o2 sensor is like 150 Eur....

Panel gaps - It's an aluminium car, not built like a steel car.

Only disappointing thing is these manufacturers have been building automobiles for almost a hundred years & to think that most haven't been able to build a truly bullet proof automobile seems unfathomable given their history & so called knowledge of producing vehicles! I can't yet understand how these companies still have reliability issues when they're developing engines drivetrains & the like. You test these automobiles numerous times under all these conditions but still produce inferior or unreliable vehicles to me is insulting! Faulty or weak parts,short cutting & just being plain lazy is unacceptable especially when your shelling out 50-90 grand on a vehicle rated as a luxury or performance automobile! I believe in integrity & merit not just panache and commercials! Beautiful automobile no doubt but the nuances take away from pure owners delight in a way to me

How do you know if o2 sensors and catalytic converters are bad?

You should get a warning light (EML) on the dash board. You can then have the code read to understand what the fault is. Thanks for the comment!

@@MrGB_UK I love how these cars sound and look like. But it's the reliability that makes me nervous
@MrGB_UK

@@rsstnnr76 An understandable concern. They're not horrific, in my opinion. Considering they are bordering on Supercar performacne terriotiry, you dont have the supercar running and maintenance costs. Jaguar is a mainstream brand, and parts & labour reflect that. Yes, I have focussed on the negatives in the video, but you get common issues with every car. If you get a well looked after example with good service history, you can't do much more!

@@MrGB_UK Why are they so unreliable? You'd think they'd do everything they can to get rid of that stereotype.

Is there a way to know if the car has had a software update that has nerfed the sound?
@MrGB_UK
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
Yes. If you put the car in dynamic mode and turn it off the car, it should remain in dynamic mode if only off for a short period of time. If it doesn't, you likely have the software update
