An all too common occurrence these days; many people would rather figure out ways to pick someone else's pocket, rather than educate themselves and come up with an original idea. Great info as always Paul. Watching your videos and reading your Muncie book have enabled me to repair several transmission projects with confidence.

Paul, interesting to learn the history of the 5-Speed conversions. You are truly the godfather of 5-Speed Jaguars and you treat the competition with respect. Interesting to know that the first Eagle's had JT5s before making their own. Curious to know your thoughts on changing rear end ratios 3.54 (USA), 3.31, 3.07, and 2.88 in lieu of a 5-Speed.

Entertaining videos as usual! I have a question you might be able to answer, I've recently bought a 70 mustang with a 4-speed toploader. While manouvering it around in the garage the transmission locked up kinda. I was selecting first gear but the car would just stall and not move at all, is it somehow possible with a toploader to have two gears engaged at the same time? Otherwise it runs and shifts nicely. It's got a new hurst shifter (installed by po). Thanks Marcus

Why did you put back the plastic speedo gear and not upgraded it to steel?
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
They had an oddball speedometer driven gear setup. I did not want to risk stripping the driven gear because it was possible that even though they copied my speedo gear design, could be a different pitch and tooth profile. Understand?
@t5montecarlo5 жыл бұрын
Well done, Paul. Did you reinstall the counterfeit extension housing? I noticed the depth of the teeth on the reground gear appeared substantially shallower than on the OEM gear. Was the mainshaft 5th gear also reground?

What techniques/tools do you use to clean up these gasket surfaces? I’ve used a dremel with brass wire wheel and it seemed to work well but I was wondering what the general consensus is?
@timmilus845 жыл бұрын
Interesting fact is that BW themselves did a similar thing with the .8 5th gear. They took the .68 (59T I think) and cut it down, then reground it for the 53T. The numbers are crossed off and new ones are stamped below them.
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
Never happened. Could have been the same forging blank. Thus same forging number. BW never reworked gears. The rework here is done because of a simple lack of tooling or desire to invest in tooling
@timmilus845 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo I guess that would have been a better description. The 4 different .8 sets I have from both OE boxes and aftermarket built (a couple by you actually) all have the numbers in that manner. It's just interesting and like you said in the video, it's a good approach.
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
If you are in the UK it's possible you got some of these reworked gears. Reworking them IS NOT a good idea. These have had serious failure and noise issues. There is a video on my KZbin channel that shows you the different factory .80 sets compared to the new set I made, which by the way has been copied by a few other companies as well.

@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
I did sell to the UK market but stopped because of UK Jaguar owners support of the copy. There are better conversions in the UK using different transmissions and several companies with unique and different approaches to choose from, but as long as several counterfeit brands exist, I won't sell or participate in that market.

Paul, Im curious, did they copy your name on the casting? The respline looks super small like 1". Did they still copy the chrysler seal and have a monster thick companion flange? Like .350 wall?
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
No may name is not on the casting. They used some oddball non standard bushing and seal. I designed the system to use a standard Ford C6 seal and bushing so it can easily be sourced. The output is smaller than 1 inch
@philipmacduffie76125 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo I can believe an output that small holds up. Some guys must be just cruising in those cars. Also somewhat of a plug but buy your 5th supports from paul. There are tons of others and I have used some. Paul's actually fits correctly and his peelable shims will change your life.

I'm new to your channel from the UK. I was sadened to hear that your good work was copied and that you lost business as a result. However, I'd be willing to bet that your extension was copied in China, not UK. 'Kin Chinese copy everything. No excuses for UK companies buying the copy though rather than direct from you. We sold/gave away most of our engineering ability years ago and it would surely be cheaper to buy direct from you rather than cast copies and machine new parts in this country. Cheaper labour in China makes all that work viable though. Interesting channel, good work.
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
Actually no. I am aware of the foundry and company in the UK that did this.
@jamescoulson25765 жыл бұрын
@@GearBoxVideo Oh really? I'm suprised at that, very naughty. I'm a Land Rover guy and we have all kinds of trouble getting good parts - aside from over-priced genuine. There are copies everywhere, sometimes they don't even fit. Even worse are companies that sell you OEM but it turns out to be a patterrn part.
@GearBoxVideo5 жыл бұрын
You need to understand something. Somebody didn't copy this in China and then decide to sell it to people in the UK. This was a transmission we use to sell to a few companies in the UK and then they decided to make copies of my castings. It was initiated by several UK companies, cast in the UK, built in the UK with crap parts and at times represented as mine. It is still being sold by several companies today. When you brand a part that is not authorized or authentic that's what we call counterfeiting in the US. Possibly in the UK you can get away with that but in the US not so much when it comes to automotive. Anyone can make replacement parts. Just don't represent them as OEM.

I'm sure you know about the imitation and flattery thing, but when the copy is sub standard and due to name association damages the brand. Yeah, it's pull out time. If it was not lucrative it would not have been copied in the first place. Sorry you had to lose that market. If i have learned anything about your practices, if it is not correct you will not do it.
