Good video. Clear and informative. Thank heavens mine is a 2020 with the modified chain and tensioner. I blame it on the stupidly long oil interval. I change mine every 6000 miles. Not cheap but better than coughing up for all that work.

only use genuine land rover parts some needing changed with under 30k so genuine parts must be junk land JLR should be replacing the chains as they are not fit for purpose i wonder what the dealer would charge to get it done great video

I think one of the biggest factors is oil changes, most manufacturers are claiming to high a mileage between changes, I would think that the oil ways to the cam chain tensioner would get blocked reducing to oil flow to keep the tensioner adjusted correctly.

Some years ago, whilst looking for parts in a wreckers yard, I observed a Ford Granada I think, quite high up, and the front engine cover was off, exposong the crankshaft cog meshed with a much larger gear-cog, which in turn drove the camshaft. Having had a timing chain snap myself, I couldn't help wondering why aren't all engines made with a gear like that,.? Save a lot of aggro wouldn't it. !

@@johnrideout7124 : Good observation on the old Granada engine crank and cam gears. i guessing the multiple camshafts and variable valve timing technologies require these complicated timing chains.

A 2024 sport ( a vehicle people have received around 1st of March) ) was parked in the high street near the shop , we’ll it wasn’t parked , 3 hours later a recovery truck arrived. A car person who knows vehicles won’t go near these vehicles. And people just keep buying JLR because they look nice , argue with people that they are good cars , then get one and end up like this. Good luck for owners that have passed their warranty stage and good luck to the ones that have just got their brand new beautiful off road capable Range Rover. Simple : Buy an old vehicle or get a Japanese/Swedish vehicle. Or just deal with the problem if you like them. (Sadly new isn’t better , every modern vehicle is no where near production standards of pre 2010 let alone 90s / 80s.

I spent just shy of $4.5k to repair/replace the timing chain at 70k kilometres. So disappointed the dealer didn’t identify it. Oil change interval way too long. 32k or 2 years. The repairer recommended oil changes at 6 month intervals… quite a difference. Even though I love the car I am so Disappointed in the product.😕

Far better hidden gems out there foolishy people just go for the brand & haven't yet discovered Lexus in the UK Market they win not just on reliability but as an overall package yes its a Toyota underneath but you truly appreciate one once you have spent the time in one not to mention strong resale value. Excellent skills. Superior dedication to duty! Do you know if JLR updated this chain to a improved version? Or is that too much wishful thinking. Got a rattle on a US Ver. 2013 LR2. I'm not qualified to do it, not sure who really is in Georgia / Tennessee area. Someone with attention to detail would be a blessing. The dealer would undoubtedly kill me deader than dead. I'd be lucky to be able to walk home much less drive. : (

Have same - 2014 - Ford Ecoboost - not a great engine but better than LR's Ingenium - will need a chain and all the other accessories changed out at 100k miles. Just did the 2012 Evoque (same engine), made a big difference. Will be $1k in parts and find an Indy LR shop, probably another $1k in labor. Consider replacing the turbo at same time - these generally only last 40k miles (get exhaust fumes coming into the cabin from the AC.)

interesting how your diagnosing chain slack by rotating the crank and compressing the oil pressurized tensioners. without oil pressure, there is of course more slack, then would normally be indicated if the engine was running. not arguing that the chain needs to be replaced because it was obvious at first sight at the oil pressurized slack adjuster was at maximum adjustment and could not take up any more tension. I have seen some indication that there was a change (2019) to the idler gear to help prevent chain problems. would be nice to know if it is an upgradable item or not. supposedly it stops chain hysteresis from damaging the guides.

My 1994 XJ40, never a problem. But regular oil changes on any vehicle will stop all this. Oil builds up clag within the oil . This is then deposited around engine. Change oil after no oil changes. This clag then breaks down with new oil and blocks pick up filter. Bang engine blows a end. . Then customer blames me. . If in doubt before changing oil stick a litre of diesel in engine. Leave it on idle for half hour . Then drain new oil . At least you stand half a chance .

Hi all, great video, I have a F-Pace 2017 from new, had service contract with JLR, so always been looked after by them. Always thought that it was a bit 'tapperty' on start up but told normal, had a Nox Sensor replaced by different JLR dealer, they said 'engine noise needs investigation, took in in this week, had a phone call and told it needs a New Engine (covered under extended warranty) is this normal to need a whole new engine? Car has 42,000 on the clock that is all. I would recommend paying for the Extended Warranty if you can.

@@horacesawyer2487 Hi, Yep had to wait 5 weeks to get the car back. They said that I had oil pressure, but not oil flow the the 'tappets' and cam shaft which is why it was a complete engine. I have to say that it is a different car, so much better, for a start the engine is a lot quieter, and a lot more responsive, there was also a slight hesitation when pulling away at a road junction sometimes, but not now. When you think that I had a service plan, so the car was always serviced at Main Dealers, each time I said that the engine seems noisy, but they just said 'they are all like that' and then it turns out there has always been a problem from new.

My 2016 evoque (automatic gearbox) produce a rattling noise as well on a start up but its just for 1-2 sec. Then it goes away. Sometimes engine light shows up as well with camshaft sensor P0341 issue. And after the car is on drive way for a day or two the engine light goes away too. My garage told me its a software update issue. But i am not fully convinced by that. Any ideas? Also the timing chain was replace 2 years ago by LR dealership. So can it be timing chain issue soo soon? The car hasnt been driven more than 20k miles after that.

The same problem happened to my aunt's evoque my 2016 150 h.p. ... LR changed distribution under warranty after 62.000 km (I remember the metallic noise after cold start) and now after 27.000 km there is the camshaft sensor with the error and in LR says he has to change distribution because they made electronic chain adjustment test and this failed, it is a 3.500€ job !! In this case there isn't the metallic noise the engine runs good ... he also changed the oil and oil filter after 15.000 km but the result is distribution to be changed only after 27.000 km. To tell the truth the problem could be provocated by the fact that he travelled some miles with oil very very low under minumum, he didn't cheek the level, this car oil warning light is on only with 3 litres of oil in the engine vs 6,5 litres and it is inacettable, LR cheeked the turbo gaskets and all was ok, no smoke from the exhaust, the engine perform very well I wonder how could it happen that was with only three litres on the engine after 12.000 km, in my opinion something faulf oil filter or mistake in LR workshop is happened.... the risult is the camshaft sensor on and chain electronic test failed means he has to change all !!! I suggested him to write to LR customer service because this is inacettable !!! It maybe is damaged the upper chain tensioner that could be changed easily but I don't know if this could resolve the problem, it is a risk to avoid Land Rover workshop in such a delicate problem we are blackmailed !!

I hope you're charging good money for this job mate, I'm seeing everything from 1500GBP to 4000GBP (dealers) with most places settling in the middle somewhere. It's hell of an involved job and not without risk, so you've got to make it worth your while. I know for a fact that loads of places are saying "nope, not interested"... There must be getting on for 2 million Ingeniums out there now, don't know how many are diesels, but I think it's safe to say this won't be the last one you get asked to do lol! 🙂

Recently purchased a used jaguar XE and it's doing this noise from a cold start and lasts about 30sec and the rattle sounds disappears, the dealer said it's normal, it's just the tensioner filling up with oil, but I'm not too sure it's just that, the fact is that I can't hear it afterwards, it's just the first 30sec from a cold start.
