Whoever thought it was acceptable to place the timing chain on the flywheel end of an engine want's kicking in the balls. I'll be honest, I didn't know these were set up like this, I've seen it on more exotic Audis but on a 2l Landy, come on man. The tooling, time and effort needed for a service item is down right obscene. Great job lads, you made easy work of a hellish job, bloody box off to service a timing set man, grrrrr.

We have a Jaguar in for turbo replacement, however the sump has to be removed for cleaning which involves subframe, rack etc dropping. Now pieces of iron casting found in sump. Another has had timing chain failure at speed . For all the Engine designers out there , have a look at old BMW and Mercedes duplex timing chains and guides...That's how you do timing chains. Our local Jag dealership has several vehicles with varying levels of damage tucked round the back awaiting work. Some have very little mileage on them. With the millions of miles of testing how did it come to this ? Carpet the under swept ...? Is it the toolings already been made let the customer do the development work.

The trend is to put the chain between the engine and the gear box . This would imply its not a service item... Then the chain is made in a size you would not want on a bicycle along with brittle plastic guides and tensioners as soft as s#1t. Take a look back when BMW'S and Mercs had a duplex chain you could tow with, a hydraulic tensioner with a strong backup spring and guides that were steel and the front oil return from the head ran down the chain. If taken to the main dealers you will be told these engines cannot be repaired and have to be replaced effectively writing the vehicle off. Got a mini with a 3 cylinder diesel engine to look at next week low mileage snapped chain... Combi Van's and Merc A class are no fun either. The designer's should be made to work on them then think again.

@@galaxymode but who would want to add additional cylinders to their car?

@@kwikmechanic6844 Well the end user wouldn't add any extra cylinders. However, during the production and assembly you can use the same interchangeable parts which reduces the cost and improves the assembly speed. At least this is my guess. In principle, the entire ingenium engine line appears, on the paper, quite ingenious! If JLR spent time and resources improving chains, guides, some other parts and bolstered their internal quality control, the end consumer would be sitting in much more reliable vehicles. My guess is that the 2027 Euro7 standard implementation killed any chances of us seeing engine improvements. My hopes are that the enthusiast builders across the world will develop more durable kits for the JLR ingenium engines. Unfortunately, so far I just saw these for the AJ123 and AJ126 engine lineup. AJ200D engines (diesel ones) most likely will not get such love, but I can only dream and hope that happens :D
