It is clearly indicated the road is closed after Tende, but I think people are understandably too busy minding the provisional road to see the signs. There is no road anymore beyond the village of Tende. It’s gone, and it will be 2025 at the earliest before the tunnel will reopen. There is some talk about improving an old military road so a 4x4 can pass but I walked it several times and it is awfully small. However, the road via Digne and Briancon and the Queras is a beautiful former Route Nationale and that region was never damaged (only the roads in the valleys in the Mercantour took the hit). The destruction is a sad story because it’s bound to happen again due to climate change. We have a holiday home near St. Martin Vésubie and we are considering selling it. I see a lot of disparaging remarks and those are out of place. The French are performing miracles in a mountainous region and in a time of COVID. The “Tempète Alex” happened in early October 2020. Whole sections of the road, bridges and buildings were washed away in four valleys. 8 people lost their lives in France, and there are still people missing.

Thanks for posting. I hoped to learn more about the devastation we saw on this trip. We were inconvenienced that day and couldn't do what we had planned but that is incomparable to the obvious destruction of livelihoods and regular life for the locals living in this beautiful area of France. As you say, all this happened on top of Covid, which must have slowed the construction of new roads and bridges down terribly. I hope things start improving soon, my only fear is it would only take a minor flash flood event to happen over the coming weeks and that road would soon be impassible again.

I watch Misha Charoudin’s channel and all the Nürburgring madness he covers. The reason why I’m including that is the great coverage he provided of the devastating floods experienced in that region of Germany a couple months ago and the heroic effort to dig out and begin repairing all the small village homes, hotels, etc that were so completely destroyed. It looked quite a lot like what Harry showed us in this video, only in much larger valleys meaning more widespread destruction. I can only imagine how terrible it was for the people living in that valley higher up, if it has been almost a year since then and the roads are still either so marginally passable or not at all!

27:45 - I work in a shop and I think most people would be surprised just how ridiculously heavy large wheels with low profile tires actually are, and it definitely isn't just the project 7. You'd think the smaller sidewall would at least make the tire lighter, when in actuality the tires need to be considerably re-enforced the smaller the sidewall gets, which adds a ton of weight to the tire itself. I think the whole low-profile tire craze is a complete farce and I don't think it's worth the slight improvement in steering response. Although with brakes that big, I think you're pretty much stuck with larger wheels. I'm not sure if it's necessary for a street car, but having extra braking headroom is welcome when you're ripping it through a mountain pass.

For what its worth- I design wheels(as part of my job) for a large OEM. As you said, the oe wheels are very strong, with strict stress/bending requirements. This comes at the expense of weight(especially a cast wheel). My understanding is that the requirements at JLR are a hold over from the Ford(PAG) days. Most OE's have similar requirements. Aftermarket wheels tend to be a lot lighter, but almost always at the expense of strength. Forged wheels can bridge the gap a bit, but not fully to the level of an OE cast wheel.
@tamasszabo88243 жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks for the info! I thought that forged wheels are not just lighter, but also stronger than cast wheels.

@patricklinkous3 жыл бұрын
I thought it was funny how he complained about the weight of the wheels and then a few minutes later said the wheels were built to the same standard as a Defender.
@stefndogg3 жыл бұрын
@@tamasszabo8824 You are correct. I should have worded that part differently- Forged wheels are stronger and lighter than cast. But most OE cast wheels are stronger than most aftermarket Forged wheels(since low weight is generally the goal of an aftermarket performance wheel). Some OE wheels are forged, but generally the benefits are only worth a bit, and the cost of a forged wheel is much more. The casting process of most OE wheels has come a long way in the last 15 years, to where the difference is not as drastic. Forged is the way to go if you can afford a really good quality wheel, but just know that there is no such thing as a super strong and super light wheel(unless it is Carbon).

Sad to see the devastation the floods have caused. It is amazing how quickly they can get the roads going again. Firstly H & Mrs M I am sorry the return trip wasn't what you'd hoped for. This is the first video I have seen featuring the P7. My thoughts are: That it is a terribly well brought up thug. With manners. If I were to come into money I'd have one at the click of the Italian fingers as my other rides are filled with pasta sauce. Very special indeed. A big thumbs up from Germany. Go carefully.

Rather surprised that Harry chose that route considering the amount of known damage, it gave me shivers as it reminded me of a family holiday in Europe in 1968 when travelling through the Simplon Pass in Switzerland they were rebuilding it in much the same fashion, and my father had to drive perilously close to the edge of a sheer drop; he was also driving a Jaguar, a brand new XJ6.

Harry, your channel quality is amazing. Each video is a joy to watch and these roadtrips are amazing to get inspiration on future trips. Have you tought of coming to Portugal through France and Spain? There's some great roads over here!

I love Portugal, it's just the ferry trip down to you that puts Mrs.M off after experiencing a rough crossing and then being sea-sick for a the whole trip. I was fine during that particular crossing and love the ferry, so maybe it'll have to be a boys trip instead!

The roads in Portugal are only slightly better than those Harry found in France
@nastyG1843 жыл бұрын
@@anthonywbelcher It's all about choosing the right ones since there are some pretty nice roads around the Douro, then there is the Serra da Estrela climb which is superb for any sports car, there are also some nice interior mountain roads with barely any cars at any given time that make you really push a car. We really can't compare roads in countires because each one will have unique ones. STG did a really nice episode in Portugal that people visiting with cars should really watch. I think Harry would have lot's of fun making a video in Spain and then in Portugal. Much love to every tourist that visits us

We just had a week and a half in France and did the superb loop from D2204 L'escarane up to Col de Turini, then back down to Sospel on the D2566 and onwards to Italy from there. Highly recommend if you're down there in the near future, truly outstanding road

Jaguar should employ Harry as a brand ambassador. I bought an F Type over a Porsche partly because of his review and his relative servicing & maintenance costs for even his P7. Haven't commented before so thank you Harry for the F Type endorsement. I love driving my car.

Thank you Harry, I watched this before doing my own trip down from Paris to Nice on the Route Napoleon, then back from Nice on the Route des Grandes Alpes, including the Col d'Iseran in a Caterham (the road was open with no snow for the first days of October). You missed a really good pass. Steep drop offs on the way down to Val d'Isere though. The roads from Nice up the valley of the Var up into the hills are fine with occasional minor roadworks and temporary traffic lights, but nothing like your problems. I varied the trip by leaving the Var and climbing through Gillette then Bonson and then the Gorges du Cian before linking up with the Route des Grandes Alpes which avoided the worst of the damage up to St Martin Vesubie.

Always love Harry’s road trips and seeing his enjoyment of his various cars 👍😊… I love the sound of the Project 7 when Harry lets it loose, it’s like a wild animal! 😃Yet, as Harry says, it can then switch back into ‘docile mode’ and bimble along sensibly. I have to say his Project 7 really does look to be the Swiss Army knife of the garage … off road ability as well!! 😱

€25 is perfectly acceptable when you see the preparation and time that goes into it. I had one done in Tours last Thursday morning, got the result in 15 mins, print out plus a link to download the certificate and an update to the French COVID app. Worked well. Also a lot cheaper than the day 2 test required when back in the UK

At Angouleme classic a few years ago I found myself cheering for the Doctor's Renault people carrier. It would set off behind the ancient cars for a lap and always be on the tail of the last car when it came around. This was to be expected of course until more modern classics set off, but no the Doctor's car was still right up with the racers. Eventually we came to the 1990's Porsche 911racers. They all roared off. We waited for them to come round, here they came, and unbelievably there was the doctor's people carrier right on the tail of the last Porsche. I really had to stand and cheer. Sports cars seem to have had their day, although I do find the old ones do have lots of character, and a good part the fun is their rattles and crudeness of the early engineering. The fastest feeling car I have ever been in was a really old Morgan at 45 mph, a real we are going to die experience. So what next for a fun car if sports fade away?

The temporary road reminded me of the roads around Kaikoura after the earthquake. The amount of work to repair the damage was truly amazing. Never would have attempted any of it the Project 7, as you wouldnt if you had known. Still a great car to spend a few days in.
