The level of trust in Mr Metcalfe in allowing him to borrow this special car is something else. Obviously well justified. He’s that rare person: a petrol head through & through, a very capable driver and used to driving four wheeled performance vehicles of all kinds (& some off road bikes, too), plus a highly engaging and knowledgeable motoring journalist. Finally, though he is, I suppose, retired from his previous, commercial career, he’s got that boyish go get it attitude, with knobs on. Let’s imagine ourselves in a similar position. How many of us could safely drive this extraordinary SLR, yet do so in a spirited fashion? Left hand drive, sitting almost over the rear axle, monster torque, electrically modulated brakes & an automatic transmission slow by modern standards. Thanks to the Metcalfe’s for bringing us along! For a twenty year old car, to me, it doesn’t look at all dated. The paint is lickable! While the interior tan leather and suede is a little OTT for me, and my word, you don’t need to continually ask yourself what kind of engine you’re sitting behind. It would be tiring, that exhaust note. I’d have to have it equipped with a switchable exhaust, or it’d do my head it with that drone on faster roads. But almost anywhere you go, it turns heads and you just cannot ignore it, in any company. I’m a long way shy of every being able to afford one, but I confess to perusing advertisements for SL55s!

Years ago, maybe fifty years ago, our family of four was sat outside the queens head in weather similar to yours on arrival. My Mother and Sister happened to look up at an upstairs window, at the same time. Looking out of this window was a girl aged about eighteen, nineteen with long blond hair in ringlets with a mob cap on her head. She was dressed as if she worked in the kitchen, we were told it was the ghost of a parlour made. Remembering that pub behind was gallows where people were hanged. It still spooks them now if you talk about it.

Harry you took the wrong bloody pass! I was shouting at the telly What you wanted were Honister and Whinlatter Passes. Honister pass is my favourite road in England, just leave it til the evening and you'll have it to yourself. Borrowdale side is the aperitif, it's the Buttermere side that earns its place imho as England's finest driving road. Many's the evening I've spent happily scampering from Buttermere up to the slate mine and back, not seeing another road user all evening. Visibility is good, you can see the whole route once the climb begins, and potentially any other vehicle on it as you cross the prehistoric feeling scenery. Just epic Keep up the good work! Luvgav

The wheels they picked don't even have a German look to them. They are almost generic tuner wheels from the 2000s. You can put aftermarket German wheels on a Japanese car and it looks pretty good, you can't go the other way around.

I'm positive these were availabe on the original SLR back in the day. Seem to remember them being fitted to the car Richard Hammond drove on Top Gear. Remembered thinking to myself "why on earth would you pick those wheels over the turbine design?". I think MSO just stamped their logo onto these original Mercedes wheels rather than having them made. Can't see why they'd go to the trouble of making new lightweight versions of the less desirable wheel design. Makes sense that these were the lighter option wheel though, as there's simply less material there compared to the turbine. I think I could live with extra 2kg weight personally.

@@iolithblue Look at 6:46 those where the SLR first rims and were the best since they need to cool those massive brakes.. so, the rims pattern from one side should not be used in the opposite side because will not cool the brakes efficiently, so yeah.. these new rims are lighter by 2 pounds but are not as efficient for the braking system..

Only got into your videos recently and loving them! RE bailing on Hardnott and Wrynose pass probably the right decision in that car but if you’ve never driven them you have to at some point! They are perfectly doable even in a big car with silly wheels like my 530 touring. Yes it’s very steep and narrow and quite potholey but there’s no other road like it in the UK and if it’s quiet its a glorious drive with great views throughout the two of them. If heading East to West set your destination to The Wasdsle Head inn at the end of glorious and remote Wasdsle for a well earned pint or a slice of cake. Looking forward to some more videos!

This remains unequivocally my favorite car of all time. Since the vision concept. That side exhaust grumbling V8 and supercharger scream gets me every time. I still can’t get over the looks. Another great piece of film making Harry and Mrs. MSO, need to retrieve the steering wheel and column to match the interior leather. Come on they match up colours on a C Class. Miss the turbine wheels on this example. It’d would look great with that unique paint colour.

I saw your 2021 round up and just had to look at this review. I live in Devon and ran out of fuel (faulty sender unit) on Telegraph Hill outside of Exeter. Plot twist: the gearbox is fine, a dual-clutch to me isn't smooth like a torque converter auto. If Stig can get it around TG track very smoothly and quickly, what's wrong with it then?

I really like the road trip format for this review, & love the beautiful countryside, geology & history of the Lake District. The car wasn't too bad either, but over £50,000 for the paint alone, thats sheer madness! Makes me wonder how much it would cost to service/ maintain this supercar?!

SLR is ultimately the ultimate versatile GT. It wont feel out of place on the road or against stiff competition at the track. Beautiful video Sir, the UK has some of the nicest places to go for a walk or a drive

you made the right decision not going up those passes!! they are horrendous. you just cant beat wales for a great drive i have a caravan in barmouth and love the A494 passed bala
