I've had my 3.0 SE for 9 years, and having replaced the sills once, rear swing arms, spring mounts, anti-roll bar, and the automatic transmission fluid twice, apart from a few electrical gremlins, it's been faultless. The Viscous Coupling in the petrol V6 versions give exemplary road holding, and they really are excellent budget Grand Tourers, last year we did 1000 miles in a single week travelling around Liverpool, North Wales and Lancashire. It was more comfortable than our hotel room! One word of advice, use Super-Unleaded: regular fuel doesn't deliver the torque and when you put your foot down the auto box will change down too many gears then go up again... but with 97+ RON in it, you put your foot down, and it just shunts you forward, and roars. No messing. The Mondeo comparison is irrelevant, yes, there are some shared components, but the car itself is completely different. You might as well say "It's got a wheel at each corner and an engine at the front... it's just a big Fiesta!". "Electrical Gremlins" include the emissions sensors (Lambda and cat-back), and the doors randomly unlock as you're driving along. Damp can also get into the ECU behind the front wheel arch. But get that properly sealed up (rain water from the windscreen runs down over it). Surprisingly comfortable, and everyone who sees it thinks you're minted. Mine looks about 2 years old when it's clean, not bad when it's actually 20 years old with 102,000 miles on the clock.

yes I agree mate. I had Jags for the last 20 years mainly as I love them. I This is the only X type I have even had tho and in 4 years it's been pretty good. and luckily mine has never been welded and is still very solid. I mainly had XJ6 from a 72 to a 97. But have had a 3.0 S type and my XK8. I just think they look and drive like nothing else. I agree on the petrol thing, I always use super in my XK8 is its better on it and BETTER MPG. I also take no notice of the Ford thing. to be honest the Jags made while under Ford ownership are far far better than the old Jags that were under British Leyland. Hands down better cars.

Good to see a good long responce from one who has had one for many years. Most responces offer very little information. I will try a higher octane on mine to see how it goes. I have personally given up on the 3ltr and the 2.5ltr models as they are much more complicated than the 2.1ltr models, and as I have a bigger and faster XJ6 Jaguar the 2.1 is fast enough for what I need as a general get around.
@Th3_Gael Жыл бұрын
You need to remove the wheel arch liners and clear out the drains from the wi dscreen if water is going where it shouldn't. I'm told, but don't know, that this is the reason the sills rot, blocked drains means water finds it way into the sills and footwell(s) causing further problems

In my opinion, X-TYPEs are not that bad, they just need qualified maintenance. AWDs need attention to their transfer box and driveshafts, 2.0D has a limited lifetime of injectors and fuel pump, 2.1 is a bit underpowered for her weight and runs a short gear ratio, 2.2D seems to be the best option.

Good review. I work in the motor trade and a dealership that I worked for had an X-type 2.0 diesel come in as a part-ex. I drove it both before it was sold to a new owner and after when it came back for service work. At the time I owned a Mondeo 2.0 petrol of a similar age. The X-type was a far better car, it was a much nicer drive and build quality was better. Totally agree with you about supermarket fuel quality. Their petrol isn’t as good as Esso. I have to buy Tesco super unleaded to get same mpg as I do with Esso standard unleaded. With the new E10 unleaded it’s even more noticeable and if I fill up Esso supreme 99 I get an extra 6 mpg compared to Tesco fuel.

Hi, I've got the saloon version of the very car you have, but a 2007 model. I have love hate relationship with it, I love it's looks, its thick full leather quality seats and the way it drives. But at the same time I hate it's hard unforgiving suspension when going slow over bad road surfaces. Also my rear alloy's / tires leak and I need to monitor the tyres pressures every time I take it out. Every repair bill I have had is more than the book value of the vehicle. Over the past two years I have paid out for a new turbo, injectors, oil pump, water pump and air con belt, a cost over over £3500 in lest than 18 months, but still for some stupid reason I like the car more than it deserves, and now that the engine is properly sorted out once again I love driving it hard especially over winding A and B roads. My brain tells me I'm a fool spending so much on an old Jag and should ditch it and buy something more reliable but my heart tells me to keep driving it hard and fast and enjoying it's amazing torque and the way it demolishes the miles. I think I have had more fun in my Jag than I did with my Nissan Skyline which had a good 100 HP more than the Jag, but the Jag doesn't and never has seemed to be lacking or underpowered in any way as the massive torque kicks in at 2500rpm in 4th gear barrelling you into the next bend. I think the X-type 2-2 diesel sport deserves to become a classic, or at least a very desirable collectable in the near future.

I've owned a 2007 2.2 diesel estate for 9 years. It's a very good car, in many ways the best car that I've owned. It's reliable, quiet and comfortable, economical, reasonably fast, nice to drive. All together, a very good car that received a very unfair press.
@richardcaulker10172 жыл бұрын
The absence of body roll is mostly due to the stiffer suspension of the sports models. The coil springs and shock absorbers are shorter and more robust than those on the non-sports models, which also makes the sports models a bit lower. The downside is that the ride is not as smooth on bumpy roads, especially at lower speeds. I've had a 2003 2.1 litre petrol Sports automatic since 2009, and the ride smoothness improved vastly when I changed the 18 inch tyres to 16 inch ones, which increased the air cushion. The car's phenomenal handling did not suffer much, although the roll increased by an almost unnoticeable amount. The massively wide 18 inch tyres also made the steering turn slightly whenever the left side ones went along any depressions in the road, where it had had been dug up to lay pipes or cables parallel to the curb. This slight but unnerving loss of control ceased completely with the slightly narrower 16 inch tyres. The 2.1 litre petrol X Type was Jaguar's first front wheel drive car, and expert reviewers said that they could not see much difference in handling between it and the all wheel drive 2.5 and 3.0 liitre petrol X types that they had tested, even on snow. I once missed a motorway exit late one evening, so as there were no other vehicles in sight behind me, and the next exit was several miles away, I slowed down to about 25 mph, turned off the road and drove straight up the rather steep and bumpy stone embankment to the slip road. I can only describe the experience as feeling like the car morphed into the big cat it's named after, and climbed the slope quickly and effortlessly. There've been no serious issues in the 13 years I've had this car, so I'm seriously considering going for a 2008 2.2 diesel estate with 89,000 miles on its clock.

@@NorfolkMancave I was always told by my dad to only use major brand fuels, and avoid the little known ones I might find in out of the way places, but supermarket fuels weren't really a thing yet back then. He said the only differences in the major brands were the additives but they were all reasonable. He worked for BP for most of his life. I admit I assumed most of the supermarkets were somehow linked to major brands, I'm not entirely sure why I thought this. @thomasgray5406 Жыл бұрын
@@niallmacdonald2710 Supermarket fuels are dreadful, I had a good insight into these when I was an accountant for Esso and UK Petroleum stations, it isn't just the composition of the fuel that's inferior, the nature of delivery and storage is less strict and the fuel gets adulterated. Commonsense should tell people why it's cheaper. I have a mint 55 65K 2.0d SE, admittedly it has been carefully maintained, but it has been pretty reliable. I like it being manual and not having a DPF, it's a myth that there's no enjoyment with the manual, there's more controllability and the 2.2d mated to an auto saps the extra torque and I disagree that the 2.2d is the more reliable unit, he is wrong. X Types do have their foibles and weaknesses: electronic boot mechanisms go, doors freezing in winter without D ring door handles, lack of folding rear seats in some saloons, front coils do a lot of work, power steering pumps are not great and the fuel cap is flimsy.

That's very strange mate. assuming it's a manual is should walk all over a 2.0 as it's got different turbo, EGR and all kinds of changes. pulling away from a rolling start in 2nd and 3rd it should push you back in your seat from about 1200 RPM, change up ar 2200 RPM and be pushed in the seat again. These have loads of torque. it's turbo actuator working as it should as I know its a common problem with the 2.2. it gets seazed and the turbo don't work as it should.
@thomasgray5406 Жыл бұрын
@@NorfolkMancave The 2 2 doesn't walk over the 2.0d as the age increases - by that stage a maintained 2.0d manual is not that far behind a 2.2d auto that's no longer quite as efficient as it once was, albeit the smaller unit is less refined. A modest remap on the 2.0d would bring it the extra 30bhp anyway and there's virtually nothing in the dynamics that needs updating to deal with that extra power. What I will say is that you get better mpg out of the 2.2d, the 2.0d is okay on a run, exceeding 50mpg, but in congested town traffic it really drops alarmingly to around 34mpg. You are absolutely right, you get a dog if a car of you go the lower end if the market and you have to be very selective in using Mondeo parts.
