My Jaguar XJ5.3C manual has been fully rebuilt over the past 11 months and now it's finished, I took it on a 400 mile trip to experience it on some of my favourite roads in North Wales. This video reveals if it all went according to plan..

I cannot forget travelling to Heathrow from Derbyshire in my dads boss,s brand new XJ6 2.8, light blue colour, 1971. Corfu fortnight, 5 star ++ etc. Fantastic for an 8 yr old lad. It had a phone, the leather seats creaked of newness , smell of leather, wood; so quiet and so were the roads in them days. Then back home to our terraced back to back house. Reality. Thats what proper dreams are made of. Great video BTW.

Wasn't it Sir William Lyons who coined the phrase, "Grace, Space and Pace"? This wonderful car is the epitome of that phrase. Harry, in my opinion, humble as it is, this is the star of your collection, without a doubt.
@johntechwriter
@johntechwriter 3 жыл бұрын
Sir William did not come up with that tag line, but it was somebody in the company. One thing Sir William did give us was this car's elegant design, uncluttered by the dreck that is mandatory on today's large sedans. Sir William mandated that the XJ series have a single uninterrupted line on both sides of the cabin, running from front to back, and that's what we get here.

I used to own one back in the day when i was younger in my 20s and their great little hot hatch’s plus you’ll get spare parts easier which same can’t be said for the Porche 924. Just be careful what Clio you busy as many of them have been ragged around the roads for years by boy racers especially back in their day.

Fuel gauge conundrum is a classic XJ6 problem Harry. The fuel feed system has a return to the tank your’e using controlled by a valve under the boot floor. The valve has seized and it’s feeding back and filling the other (wrong) tank. If you leave it too long it will overtop the tank you’re not using (ask me how I know!). It’s a pretty simple fix assuming the valves are still available or your existing can be repaired. TonyS

Agreed Ted it's a beautiful thing. If you're interested in a local expert, Harry (a different one) at West Coast E Type in Newbury Park is doing amazing XJ12 restorations and upgrades. I can't quite understand why this Harry didn't swap to modern injection. The West Coast version includes a downdraught option giving just shy of 400bhp and looks like a 70s f1 engine. The ugly plumbing of the original is gone as is the unreliability. Anyway great Hg video as always.

Hi. Just seen your comment about switching tanks and the other one saying it’s full after a little while. It’s common for the fuel return valve to stick to one tank and therefore fill just one of the tanks up when you’re running on either. When drawing from the tank you’re refilling you wont notice. Thing to do is to empty the tank that’s filling itself, switch to the the other tank and when that runs low see if the level in the other has increased. If so it just needs the valve sorting out. Easy job. Good luck 👍🏼

That very distinctive engine note that sounds like a slightly rorty six cylinder, yet not quite. I love that car, Harry. Even before her new make-up was applied, you could see her potential and the way she performed then - although being a slightly rough diamond - was still as a gentleman's spirited cruiser. That colour does it wonders and all - especially against the Welsh background or on the sands and didn't it just fit in outside that old Hotel? Wow! She's a beauty and I hope you enjoy many many miles with her.....and can take us for a blast when her run-in period is over and we get to hear the other end of the rev range bellowing out her tail pipes and see how she goes when she's not in cruise mode!

I used to wash as a 17 yo for my boss whilst on the YTS! It was a 5.3 ltr Daimler in the lovely blue that jag/Daimler did with OG steel wheels with a vinyl roof. The owner also had a Celica as well and yes I washed that too, those alloys on the late 80s Celica's used to cut my fingers every time I l washed it. I came to hate the Celica but not the Daimler and its fluted grille. You could use the engine as a poster, and it'll sell buckets.

A great video of a beautiful car - thanks Harry. I'd like to mention a couple of things born of experience of living with these cars. When closing the boot lid just bring the lid slowly to a close and gently squeeze it shut. The other tip is about fuel management. Start with both tanks full. Drive on right tank until 1/2 full, then swap to left tank and drive until empty. You then have 60 to 90 miles of reserve waiting for you in the right tank. No need for a reserve warning lamp. 1/2 emptying the RH tank first rebalances the weight distribution in the car when driving with only the driver on board. So pleased to see you enjoying this fabulous car. A v12 manual for non-ridiculous money, what's not to like.

Beautiful car, but having owned an XJC from new in 1975 (albeit a 4.2), I remember it being a supremely silent car without the exhaust sound of this one. Mine was also a 3 speed auto. I later replaced it with an XJS V12 which was so silent I used to try and restart it at traffic lights!

Harry, there are so many comments, that the fuel tank question might have been answered already. I will take a shot at it anyway. The fuel tank switch has two sets of contacts. One to switch the delivery valve from left to right. The other to select the left or right fuel sender. If the switch has bad sender contacts you will have misleading info. If the tank selector contacts are bad, the tank selector valve will default to the left tank. But the sender will report on the right tank. Beautiful car, beautiful color!

Car looks amazing. I paused the old magazine page out of interest. Cant see why the xjs would be so much quicker from 0-60 than the v12 xjc. Then I spotted the comments on the capri 3.0s.... doesn't go round corners. for straight line man. Who wrote that? My capri was the car that tought me how to go sideways and im sure I wouldn't be the 54 year old drift king I am today without it. :) Straight line man indeed. Opposite lock man more like. Keep the videos coming and don't forget the bikes when spring comes

As a 61-year-old Aussie admirer of anything slightly different. I too have always admired the coupe, so rare out here and as you so correctly point out, elegant. You have nailed everything with this restoration. I'd actually like a 997.2 in this hue. I'm hoping with the loosening of the engine and the pipes having run red hot for a few more miles under the welly, the exhaust develops into a bellowing exquisite crescendo. Get on with those miles Harry...& thankyou for sharing. You'ré still the number one presenter when it comes to subtle technical empathy and delivery.

Fantastic car! I'm impressed by your tasteful upgrade choices, having owned a '76 XJ12C in the States. I very much wanted to do a manual conversion, but there were other pressing things, like body rot. The twin tanks are a pain. Sometimes the valves stick, causing supply from one tank and return to the other. That might explain the puzzling fuel gauge behavior. So glad you are using this wonderful car.

Watching from NZ. I still remember my one and only drive as a young passenger in an XJ. Thought I was the bee’s knee’s. Remember it as well as yesterday, was around 1970. Loved Jaguar ever since and enjoy Harrys Garage.

The changeover valve between the fuel tanks needs checking, and the non return valves as well. Sounds like your drawing from one tank but returning fuel to the other one. I had a Series III Sovereign for nearly 30 years and had to change the return valves.

You are correct. It was returning to the wrong tank because the valves were stuck. If I tapped them with a hammer, fuel returned to the tank I was drawing from. They are new valves too, just faulty ones!

"Its January and it's 11/12 degrees outside and it's sunny" ... whilst driving along in a 5.3 V12 Jag 🤣👌 Beautiful car in a beautiful colour. May you enjoy many happy safe miles in it. A late series 3 daimler double six is on my lotto win car wish list.😊

To me , having been born in '66, this is quintessential British motoring, absent the Japanese or Euro influence. And the metallic green just suits it down to the ground, bravo Harry!

That car is stunning! The perfect expression of grace, space, and pace. I’m interested in the aesthetic upgrades you have made both outside and inside. For example, I could have sworn that on the front fenders, there were rectangular Jaguar logos. Could you show us before and after shots?

Lovely Harry. Thanks for another blast from the past brought to life. I lusted after one as a youngster (I too preferred this classy number to any E-type) though the one I fancied then probably had the brighter green and tan vinyl roof 😀 C'mon the 70s!

This Jaguar looks amazing & I love the colour you chose....it really suits the car. I realise that you're still running that glorious V12 engine in, but I couldn't help but notice that the exhaust sounds a bit coarse/rough. Perhaps there's a modification you can get to alter/ improve the exhaust sound whilst rectifying the flange clearance issue?

Last time I drove a car to that beach, it sank down onto its floor pan into the sand. The exhaust was blowing bubbles into the income tide! I've never been more scared and have never been back, but that's another story! If I was ever fortunate enough to own a car like this, I'd keep it a long way from that salty beach! Hope you gave it a thorough wash afterwards to clean off all the salt and sand!
