These old Jags are magic. For long distance, high speed driving, they're unbeatable. So comfortable that fatigue doesn't happen, you actually get out at your destination feeling better rested than when you set off, and yet so grunty and stable that it feels like it can handle anything. Considering most people are running around in newer cars that cost several times the price of an old XJ, you can ignore the fuel bills, they're worth every penny.

I think you'll find any car manufactured during 70's was prone to rust and the Jaguar XJ series is no worse than other brands. Here in the UK winters were worse back then and the roads were heavily salted and you'd have to replace the front wings on a car every two years.

@damienmills2933 жыл бұрын
@@joshuarosen6242 I'm an Aussie and we have (had?) plenty of completely rusted cars as we mostly live near the sea (Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne) and the Trade Winds blow that salt half way across the continent. That's why Lake Eyre and Lake Torrens are full of salt. It is wind blown from the ocean. However the air is dry and if you live inland steel seems to last indefinitely. Basically, we throw away the rusted ones and do up the ones that aren't. Cars from the '70s came here already rusting after 3 month journeys on ships that allowed the sea spray to affect them. Also, they were simply not rust proofed. Leno talks about this re the cars he grew up with.

I had a 4.2 20 odd years ago before prices went crazy and despite being a rust bucket and the British Leyland build quality it is probably the most enjoyable car I have ever driven and owned. Buy the best one you can afford - all parts special to the coupe are EXPENSIVE to replace and everything will need some attention by now. You will need deep pockets to restore one of these properly now. I must have bought mine from Arthur Daley too 'cos when I took it for MOT the following year I discovered it didn't have any inner sills! I ended up swapping it for a much shinier '79 Mercedes W116 450SEL with a full MOT, but sadly no soul....

My mother had a crash on the autobahn in 1966 and the car was written off. Then they bought a 3.4 manual, overdrive. I sort of learned to drive in this car. 210kmh on the autobahn at age 18. You could probably improve the "sound" of the door closing by having the door's inner skin Dynamatted. It's a type of sound insulation with a super sticky black tar based adhesive backing on a metallic foil layer. You should change the dash to a series 1 style, with the dials in the center instead of the ugly vent.

When he mentioned doing work inside and then showed the dash, that’s what I thought he was going to say!!

Hi Harry. One thing for certain, this is very straightforward compared to the Lancia and about half the price. This will tilt toward 20 with the engine work. The radiator support will be corroded behind that small black lower grille panel. And all the coupé had an black everflex roof ( probably to help eliminate the drumming ). Good luck Harry.

I like how every panel was common for rusting away 😆 Classic BL. Great video. Looking forward to this resto

Yes we tend to forget Jaguar was kept alive by BL once hundreds of new production jags in the parking area rusting before sold
@davecullen59863 жыл бұрын
But thank goodness they were kept in business and thanks to Ford too

It's annoying to keep hearing fun poked at BL quality considering how much junk was on the roads in those days.

@@ashleyweston5420 👍 42 years and still here. Whilst many a French Italian and German car have gone. BL made some great cars, just look at the prices they fetch now.

An old friend of mine had one of these to tool about Sheffield when they were in production, as his daily driver. He went a Silver Metallic, Black Ever-flex roof finished off with a set of Wolf Race Alloys. Great car and always regretted selling it. A Red BMW 635csi replaced it, but was not as much fun.. A Deep Red Pearlesent would show off the curves rearly well as well. Decisions, decisions. Keep up the great work Harry, Evo subscriber from Ed 001. Best Rgs, Paul Rodman.

I did my E-type S3 OTS in indigo Blue 4 years ago. An amazing color, especially in the sun. My absolute favorite.

My dad had a s111 in the indigo blue, looked absolutely stunning in the daylight and its still my favourite colour on a jag

Not just treated to the Lancia restoration we now get the Jag! Looking forward to this one - now what colour will Harry go for! 🤔

Non metallic black with matte aluminum brightwork. Interior in full green leather, green carpets, door cards, green everything. Beautiful wood grain trim with matching wood steering wheel and shift knob. Wheels from the XKSS wrapped in proper modern Michelin rubber. Full bumper delete with any holes properly filled. This allows the original design to be on show as it was intended. Would shave 10-20 years off the design as old bumpers age a car and were fitted by law, not by design choice. Engine will be the centerpiece with the ORIGINAL build configuration of the V12, used in their mid engine race car. Fuel injection delete and replaced with Webber carburetors. If FI has to stay then a swap to MFI on ITBs. This jewel of a V12, with its rev happy nature would be insane with the tremendous induction bark that it so desperately deserves. This is the exact build I would personally do but would be honored if Harry was inspired by my taste and used this exact spec for his build. A 5.3 V12 XJC trip to LeMans in a 3 part Eurotrip series to cap off the project once completed or a trip to Goodwood this year with the car showcased by Jaguar with their Legends C-type, D-Type, and the dream boat XKSS. FYI the all green interior idea comes from the XKSS. Thought to paint the XJC in the exact XKSS spec but believe black would contrast better and really set off the entire car.

I remember speaking with the chairman of a Jag club in my country. Their position was, you have to take them apart and make the body weatherproof. Which they did. Sandblasted the naked body, zinc-anodized it, and then the body got "proper" primer and paint layers, followed by "correct" lacquers. In the process, the common "weak" points would be addressed (primarily wiring looms and electronics, a couple mechanical things) and after all this was done, they'd have a proper car that could live up to the statement it tries to make.

Such an underrated car Harry , i am glad you take good care of it because it is quite a unique gt even for those years . Personally i like it more than the xjs shape and atm i am searching for an xj v12 , simply mesmerised by the elegance ...

"A very common area for corrosion", points to the whole car lol. Still absolutely love this thing, glad Harry is getting it made solid again. This is one of most beautiful car shapes ever made, right down through the later XJ6s etc. I actually love the blue, but hey, it's Harry's car. That said, the blue on the other car is fantastic as well....

Love the video, I have always been told that you never see a two door Jaguar without a vinyl roof as Jaguar could never get the roofs right? Now I've just seen two together! Brilliant! Keep up the good work Harry.
