A very logical & useful explanation as always, notice John at TTG is also referencing your expertise. Just a few observations with my XK8 ; # a good battery battery is sacrosanct, a good sign is the windows have forgotten their settings. # as with our Land Rover TD5 we used to get the "3 Amigos" show up with a dodgy battery, TCF, ABS, HDC. Does not prevent driving, though very annoying. # reversing light bulb is not sensed. # engine coolant level, sounds scary, has occurred twice & each time it is the header tank. Usually when I corner too fast ! & the level misses the sensor. # handbrake on, I never use the handbrake ! However, I have on my wife's Freelander & it will still drive away ! Is the handbrake on the prop shaft as on TDi & TD5, or wheels ? # something to remember, if you have no juice in the circuits you cannot open the boot to access the battery. My XK8 badge boot release would not work even with my wife bouncing up & down on the boot lid. (no video !) Looked up the internet & saw all sorts of scary ideas like removing the rear "seats". !! I tried pushing power back in via the cigar lighter, no joy, so contacted TTG & John provided a work around which, hey presto with a Li power pack, popped it open, thank goodness. Been on a charger since & windows have been "trained" successfully. Keep safe & keep up the good work for the XK8 Nation during 2021. Cheers

Alan, thank you for the comment and compliment. Good information from your experience. Answers to the couple of questions you asked. The hand brake operates brake shoes inside the hub of the brake discs. The coolant level might be the fact that the degas/atmospheric tank is empty. Might be worth checking as this ensures the header tank is always full. See this video for your reference kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6ame2WOa7OpoKM . Thank again and have a good Christmas, regards Damian

Red engine light means electronic throttle failure. You should be able to get some limited (a third i think) mechanical throttle opening but you will have to use all the throttle pedal travel.
@ODRModurol4 жыл бұрын
Andy, Sorry should have made clear, this is from the drivers handbook of a MY1997 car. The engine is AJ26, the XK8 didn't get electronic throttle until AJ27 MY1999. Assume it means something else wrong with the throttle and puts into just limp mode in this case. Don't know for sure. Thanks for the comment and input, regards Damian

I got the restricted performance message on mine every other drive until it warmed up, never found out what the issue was. Also got coolant level low even though the reservoir was virtually full and ESP/ABS fault if I let it sit for a week or more (presumably due to the voltage sensitivity).

Hi Damian, is there any relation between the S mode and the kick down switch under the accelerator pedal? It looks like when I it this switch (ie accelerator "to the floor"), I notice the yellow warning light switching on, but then nothing else ('cause I release the pedal?) and no default code on my OBD... I didn't try it with the S mode, though, but should I? I can't understand exactly what this kick down switch is related to... Regards
@ODRModurol2 жыл бұрын
Videau, what year is your car? The switch was deleted at some point as an upgrade as could be controlled by the throttle position sensor. Do you get a message in the message centre when you get the yellow warning light? Using the S button shouldn’t effect the kickdown feature. Is it changing down? Here is the quote from a later Jaguar manual “Kick-down - When D is selected and the accelerator pedal is depressed fully, the transmission will downshift to the lowest appropriate gear. Once the accelerator pedal is returned to a normal driving position, the transmission will up-shift to the highest appropriate gear. Note: Kick-down operation will vary according to road speed, current gear in use and accelerator movement”. Hope that helps, regards Damian

@@ODRModurol it's a 96 model, and no, no message, just a flash of the yellow light, Asie something is wrong with the switch itself. I read what the manual said and can't figure out what can't be wrong... i'll check it by waiting for à message to appears, either on the panel or the obd... thanks for the replacer, regards

One that is critical but not in this warning system is the blinking MIL (Check Engine Lamp). Do not continue to drive the car as catalyst damage is imminent.

Conanwon1, Probably would be OK, going to be running rich or lean, but would not like to give advise for this. Just need follow to instructions in your drivers handbook and get it sorted ASAP. You don’t want any unintentional consequences. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

I just had mine throw a Transmission Fault Code. Can I drive it to the repair shop, or should it be towed?
@ODRModurol2 жыл бұрын
Randall, not 100% sure as depends on the code, hence the repair shop. Is the message accompanied with a red or orange light? Have you had other warnings as often low battery voltage can throw up error codes. If so would charge the battery and see if it clears to error. If not best to be cautious and get a tow as if the gearbox does break up inside it probably won't be repairable or more costly to repair. (Also depends on the cost of tow versus a new/refurbed gearbox). Hope that helps, regards Damian

I put a full cold air intake system on my XK8 and occasionally get a "reduced engine performance" light with little if any change in performance... Any ideas???

I read recently that the standard induction arrangements have fairly tight parameters, even slight deviations from that will cause the ECU to assume a problem. It may be a case of having to reprogram the ECU to accommodate the new airflow volume you now have. The standard setup has cold air feed of course from the o/s wing. Best to speak to specialist.
@ODRModurol3 жыл бұрын
Faustus, doubt it’s that tight that cold air would take it out of its capability especially with some of the winter weather experiences especially in North America. Thank you for your input and comment regards Damian

@@ODRModurol Air temp extremes it can of course cope with, but air volume is a different matter. I saw this explained recently on one of the 'to the garage' videos, worth a look.

Faustus, it could cause an issue just doubt it especially if the MAF unit and intake bore are the original size. Tend to try the easier DIY stuff first. Most problems can be fixed with standard maintenance. Thanks for your comment and input regards Damian

I've had a "restricted performance" come up in Scotland while on holiday. It was a bit of a pain in the ass because the car felt like it was restricted to about 100HP. Turned out the throttle body needed cleaning. I've also had an overheated coolant message which I've now fixed by replacing the coolant sensor. I've had a gearbox fault come up as well but that hasn't come up since, no idea why that came up, probably just a glitch. Messages scare the shit out of me though especially when it doesn't tell you specifically what the problem is.

@@ODRModurol Both of my floorplans are rusted out which is irritating. Going to get those sorted asap. Just noticed rust on the floor where I park the car. I pulled a nice chunk of rust off the car. I think Jaguar really should have done a better job with rust prevention on these cars but at least it's not serious. Other parts are showing their age though, the corners of the sills are starting to rust and on the lips on of the wings. One of the rear wings also has a bubble. Once I get them all sorted out I should be all good though. I hope.

Kuddlesworth, sorry to hear your car is suffering from tin worm. Its the side effect of using them. You might want to have a look behind the front crossmember inner wings and under the rear crossmember brackets. Don't want to loose any more cars when its all do-able. Kuddlesworth, best to get it checked out as there are the suspension mounting points. Don't think Jag did that bad the front crossmember is aluminium so no worries there. Just somethings you can't predict like where rust will start to take a grip. Thanks Damian
