He was already struggling with it, and well, he probably thought of everything Shepard said a million time. Tbh, I thought Shepard was acting like a dick in that mission, but well, I don't really consider using the genophage a mistake, or updating it a mistake, I kinda look at Mordin like a poor guys who ended up with the dirty job. I totally agree that it's good, it's so interesting, just look at how we have different outlooks on it. Small detail I noticed. When Mailon said the Genophage must end Mordin answered with “not like this”. Before this moment he always said it must go on, but he didn’t even considers that. This is the moment Mordin realized that, if he survived the Omega 4 relay, he would have to fix the Genophage himself and this time he would do it right. No more suffering, no more unethical experiments, the Krogan must be healed and it must be done without any more suffering.
@rosePetrichor4 жыл бұрын
One of the best characters in gaming, in my book. For all intents and purposes he was the villain of his own story, but his character growth is remarkable and he does what all deep characters in a story like this should do; asks a moral question. Some in ME are straightforward, like Legion: Can a collective of AIs ever be alive? With Mordin, the question is one of the oldest in philosophy: Should extreme circumstances justify any means? Almost all moral principles break down in a situation where two people have the desire and power to kill each other and will not back down for the sake of their own survival. Should anything be permitted in situations like those, even the most horrible crimes? What the Salarians did to the Krogan definitely seems less barbaric than what the fate the Krogan had planned for everyone else if they won their war. Does that justify it? I don't think there is an answer. Mordin's writing covers all the bases of things that people do to justify such actions to themselves; 'the big picture', drawing arbitrary red lines for themselves 'no species capable of calculus' etc etc. Only to be hit by his student turning those same justifications around on him.
@bigdunks4eva4 жыл бұрын
Great post. One of the main points of this trilogy is that things often aren't as black and white as we make them out to be. This game covers so many issues that are relevant to real life.
@CreepyBlackDude3 жыл бұрын
I think Mordin's struggle with the morality of his actions, him finally coming to a resolution for it, and him acting so decisively for that resolution, is probably why he is (along with Garrus) my favorite male character of the entire series.
@gzapray72032 жыл бұрын
Personally, this is why Mordin's loyalty mission is the best. While it's easy on gameplay terms, storywise, it's one of the most divisive and most emotionally engaging because it basically forces you to confront your existent morals and standards.

The Genophage was necessary during the Krogan Rebellions if you went through the history vault in ME3 but upgrading it when the Krogan were adapting all because you relied on simulations and statistics? Every other species pre-invasion was 11 billion, Krogan was 2.8 billion pre-invasion and he thought a sterility plague that would eventually cause the Krogan species extinct 'a necessary evil' then he's mad, blind or both. Mordin remains one of the most fascinating characters in the Sci-Fi genre. A true renaissance man; brilliant, creative, intelligent, humble, but morally imperfect. Presents a moral dilemma with outstanding outlook and pressing against his assertions doesn't feel like an antagonization, but a challenging of both his and your own moral boundaries. Sure, he perfected a sterility weapon and reduced an entire sapient species' population growth to a standstill, potentially dooming them, but he also prevented what was at the time one of the most dangerous sapient species in the galaxy from taking over. He'll claim every time that he doesn't regret his work, but there's always that slight hint of guilt somewhere, waiting to reveal itself, especially as you constantly find limits to what even he's willing to do for the sake of his work.

Honestly ,this is probably one of the best stories and redemption arcs a character in a game can ask for. In ME2, while he does show signs of guilt over the modified genophage ,he is still 100% able to justify it without missing a beat when and after you meet him. I think that his loyalty mission is the start of his path towards redemption since the entire mission hits him with this problem over and over again and really makes him question whether what he did really was the right thing to do. Also he was kinda weird and quirky a good portion of the time so we had no idea what kind of person he really was deep inside or could be later on. In ME3, he is not only fully ready to cure the genophage and atone for his sins ,but is also ready to ensure it happens no matter the cost. The most important part of this story is once he gets at the Shroud during the mission on Tuchanka , where he soon realises that he has to make a final chance due to the current circumstances: - he takes the elevator up and cures the genophage, but he is not coming out of there alive - he walks away and dooms the entire krogan race forever Even though he knows that he won't live to tell about it and that he might never be forgiven by the krogan, he still takes the elevator up and fixes the one thing that had been haunting him continously for so much time (most likely knowing that he will never get rid of the guilt any another way). In the end, he dies happy since he not only saved an entire race from extinction (a race which he had no obligation to save or like),but he is also finally able to let go of the guilt and bad memories and finally be free due to fixing his biggest mistake, even if it's only for a few seconds before the inevitable happens.
