Just a matter of time before you run into one of these new ones James. I agree fines and 9 months is nothing, a serious deterrent would be handing out 14 year prison terms.

If you haven't watched it, there's a great documentary on Crave about Frank Bourassa's 20$US counterfeit notes. The amount of preparation he put in is mind boggling. Worth the watch. Also, as a new collector, i went around a few banks and found one that gave me 20 rolls of canadian pennies for free! Oldest coin found was a 1939. Love the channel, new suscriber!

The machines that count, sort, & roll coinage don't discriminate as long as the coin likely has just the correct thickness and diameter - as evidence by the sheer amount of Canadian Pennies and British Pence you can find here in the USA when you get rolls of Pennies at our banks. Our banks and system down here don't seem to be able to easily remove foreign or counterfeit coinage from circulation. Every time I get rolls of old Pennies to look through, usually out of $5 worth, you get several Canadian Pennies and a few other foreign coins or strange tokens that are Penny sized. Clearly a Penny is not nearly a big of deal as $2, but similar challenges in a modern, automated banking world.
@CADRollHunter3 ай бұрын
I imagine that's true! The technology to remove them would likey be cost-prohibitive.
@davidbandler3 ай бұрын
They could probably use something similar to what soda and vending machines use, but those are usually a simple circuit checking for inductive or similar magnetic-reactive properties of precious metals (to prevent people from spending blanks and cheap fakes.) But that system still wouldn't be able to remove foreign coinage; you'd be looking at some sort of OCR system what's used like for paper currency. That system would be probably relatively cheap to make and use, but the cost to develop (and likely change all coinage) and deploy would be the barrier. Counterfeiting is one of the reasons why paper currency gained preference over coinage.

Hey there Cad roll hunter sorry I don't know what you go by. BUT I've recently found one of your coin hunting videos and I've been obsessed with your videos! I swear I've watched 10+ of your videos in the last two days. However just have a few questions Im fairly new to coin hunting and got into commemorative coin hunting few months back. Ever since i watched your channel tho I've been checking all the spare change in my house for cool coins not just commeratives. Coolest things I've found are .5 silver 1968 quarter and a 1970 low mint nickel. However this has been through spare change and I've ran out of it 😂. I really want to start coin hunting however Im quite young and don't have a bank account. So I was wondering if I take 50 dollars to any bank will they give me coins and if so what coin do I get? Is 50 too little? Sorry for the long message hope you can reply. Thanks again ❤
@CADRollHunter3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for reaching out! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos! Some banks will want you to have an account with them. So, you might need to do that. Depending on your age, you might need to get a parent to go in with you to set that up. $50 is lots to start with. Maybe ask for a few rolls of quarters ($30) and ten rolls of nickels ($20). Quarters are great for commemoratives, and nickels are your best bet to find something old. You might not find anything the first time - or maybe you'll luck out! But if you keep trying, you're bound to find something cool! Definitely let me know if you find anything interesting!

In the US, the current punishment is $250,000 fine and or up to 20 years in Prison for counterfeiting or passing counterfeit money. Of course, there are certain conditions warrant a full punishment yet protect a poor citizen from accidentally receiving and spending one.

A little off topic in terms of this video, but is there an area where you can get your older copper coins recycled to get more value in return versus its face value? I've made tons of phone calls, nobody accepts them. I guess it's the illegal aspect to melting coins in Canada making all areas refuse them. I wonder what's the purpose of separating the copper pennies if no added value comes from there metal content from no buyers. Any thoughts?
@NikonGlare3 ай бұрын
You keep them as coins hooping that one day you can use it to barther for its copper value. You could also find someone willing to buy them for the copper value, but it must be a local deal as shipping is too expensive with how heavy it is. It is basically a worthless bullion waiting for its day to shine.
@CADRollHunter3 ай бұрын
That's exactly it. Waiting and hoping!
@CADRollHunter3 ай бұрын
There is currently no marketplace for cooper coins. However, if the cost increases, eventually there will be a market to buy and sell them based on their bullion value, exactly the way silver coins trade.

OK I do not know Canada law but, if those fake coins differs so much from the original, then should we still speaking about counterfeit? For me action of this person is clearly fraudulent, but by just ordering those coins from china should not be penalised. Instead penalised should be attempt of spending it as a legal tender. Customs should pass cackage to the recipiont, then police authority should monitor recipiont behaviour, and catch him red handed when he would try to use those coins as a legal tender.
@CADRollHunter3 ай бұрын
It is probably important to note that these ones don't actually have a denomination on them. Just "Canada $ Canada." So, I suppose you're right there shouldn't be an issue with just owning them, if there was actually no intent or attempt to pass them off as real money.
