600 pound life question - the restricted calories prior to bariatric surgery is called a liver shrinkage diet. A fatty liver could make the laparoscopic surgery impossible, meaning the surgery might have to be stopped altogether or in some cases the surgeon will have to perform an ‘open’ surgery instead (meaning a large incision, longer surgery time and recovery). Restricted calories and sugars up to 6 weeks prior to surgery will make the body ‘use up’ the stored carbohydrates from the liver for energy - resulting in the desired shrinkage. I hope this makes sense!

@CreamyBeige6 ай бұрын
Dr. Christian Jessen (the doctor on SSvsSS) has body dysmorphia and exercise addiction. He was on his own programme in the UK, where he was weighed and his body fat was a really low percentage. He spoke about how much time he spends exercising. It was pretty clear how serious his body issues were. He has also admitted in newspapers that he dealt with bulimia at the beginning of his television career. So although he might be a good fit for the show, in some respects, as he has dealt with eating disorders himself (or thats how he justified it, when interviewed about the show), he is probably just a little gleeful that Betsy has to be weighed at the zoo and he doesn’t, due to his own issues.

Idk, but I think a lot of people are reading him wrong but I also haven't seen a full episode of this show and can be totally wrong. Could he sound more empathic? Sure. Sorry if this has already been answered 900 times! 😆 The reason bariatric surgery pre-op diet is so restricted has 2 purposes. 1. They are about to reduce the size of the stomach, so the patient has an opportunity to get used to small amounts of nutrient-dense foods beforehand. This helps reduce the risk of accidentally eating more than the post-op stomach can hold, which causes nausea and vomiting and is generally miserable. 2. It’s not meant to be permanent. It’s basically a pre-op crash diet that operates on the theory that the body will start breaking down its own fat and nutrient stores when it needs more than 1200 calories. It can be difficult to ventilate patients who carry a lot of their body weight around their midsection because the anesthesia prevents the body from assisting via muscle tension. The weight applies the majority of its force on the vena cava and causes stress on the heart and lungs during surgery. That’s why Dr. Now tries to do his procedures as quickly as possible. They don’t have to maintain such a strict diet long term. Bariatric surgery is generally a whole program with long term support and they adjust the diet throughout that time. Or at least the good ones are.

They really make more of a spectacle of the supersizer, even the way they describe each other's food at 15:05 and 15:45 proves that. You don't hear them describing Jake's Red bull as a "sugar ladened non-hydrating no nutritional value energy drink."

not to defend this show, because it's ridiculous, but they would be absolutely insane to the "super skinnies" too. Jaime! As a fellow midwesterner, you should know that there is an episode of my 600 lb life that takes place in Hills, Iowa. It’s a very tiny town outside of Iowa City. At the beginning of the episode the subjects boyfriend brings her two slices of Casey’s pizza and the cheesy potato bites for breakfast and it’s like… dude I really can’t fault him or her for eating that 😭😭

To answer the question “how did appetite change in 5 days” I have an up and down relationship with food. If I’m sad, I can go days without eating. When I start coming back from the sadness, I realize I can only eat so much before I’m full and it’s nothing like when I’m eating normally. Like it only takes 3 days then when I come back to eating I’ll only be able to eat half of a sandwich and some fries rather than smashing the whole sandwich, fries, and something for dessert and could still go for a bag of chips. To make a long explanation longer while summing up why I explained that😅 your stomach shrinks when you don’t eat and expands when you eat more than necessary.

Even at the height of it I was still 'overweight', so I would watch this show to shame myself into not eating for days on end, and whenever I'd be tempted to eat I'd watch how the fat person was treated to remind myself of what was at stake. Genuinely such a messed up and unhealthy show. That one british doctor who was on EVERYTHING medical that could be sensationalised (dr christian I think? not sure) really pisses me off too. Key figure in the whole uk 2000s poverty-shaming programming that was everywhere.

As someone who has struggled with anorexia, I hope they got some psychological help for Jake, too. I ended up getting a bleeding peptic ulcer from not eating enough and taking too much ibuprofen for my shitty leg. I was 24 years old when I almost died from it. I was crapping blood, vomiting blood, and couldn't eat anything. ANYTHING. I lived on saltines and water for 4 months. I was on extreme acid reducers for 3 years, nausea medication for 4, anxiety meds for 5 years (still need them, but don't have Healthcare now), 6 months of suicide watch at home (no doors, couldn't shower or go to the bathroom by myself, etc), couldn't dress myself (too weak), and had an extremely restricted diet for FIVE YEARS. Even the BRAT diet was too much because I couldn't eat bananas, apples, or bread. I'd eat 3 teaspoons of rice and one 1" cube of chicken and feel like I was going to pop. At 6 feet tall, I was 113lbs. For reference, the recommended weight for a 6ft tall woman is 145-170 lbs. The doctor considered me 50 lbs underweight. I looked like a skeleton. This boy was on a path like that. Those energy drinks are going to rip through his gut and destroy his stomach. Don't ruin your stomach, folks. It's a ride you don't wanna take.

@ChaiMoose I don't cry for movies. Like ever (unless they kill the animal, so uncool). But my mom and I both wept when we watched To The Bone. It just hit home so hard. I was on watch for months, but I couldn't do it in a facility. I have severe PTSD from being assaulted by a doctor when i was 4, so medical staff and environments make me black out and have debilitating stress reactions. The doctor was afraid hospitalizing me would actually make me worse, so he and my mom had to be in communication daily while I was treated at home. I'm glad you're doing better and trying to repair your body. Eat loads of red meat. Like, I'm talking at least 3-4 days a week. It helps.

16:56 you are 100% right. An extreme calorie cut will make your muscles atrophy, then when you relapse it’s even harder to lose the weight.
@kalinka53336 ай бұрын
You're so right. The calorie intake has to be in relation to weight and muscles. The more a person weighs the more muscles it takes for them to move and the more calories they burn. If they had strapped a bunch of weights onto the skinny guy until the two people weighed the same, he would have quickly run out of energy and needed something more sustainable than just sugar water with caffeine.
@plastichouseplant6 ай бұрын
I think they put them in an extreme deficit on My 600 lb Life is for a few reasons. The first is so they can prove to Dr Now that they can stick to a diet of a very small amount of food which will be necessary to do after the surgery with a smaller stomach capacity, and also to prep for surgery as getting to as low of a weight as possible will minimize surgery complications. Also giving them a limit of 1200 gives them more wiggle room so if they end up cheating a little or not measuring properly they'll still be in a huge deficit. If they were just trying to lose weight without surgery, there's no reason anyone that large should be eating less than 2000 calories.
@sarahgent18095 ай бұрын
The calorie count they expect the very large people to drop to makes sense < although super unrealistic > because they are such a ticking time bomb and they are so close to dying or having severe issues from the weight at the very least
