@@SjH98 ....Betrayal happened when India interfered under Indira Gandhi to SL politics by stopping the Vadamaarachchi operation which happened in 1987, Indian forces invaded SL air space to save LTTE which was about to be wiped out by the Army. This was the reason SL had a 30 year old Civil war destroying its economy and over 100,000 lives lost. No wonder SL didn't trust India and went with China because of this. So now its time for both parties to say let bygones be bygones. Modi Govt is different than those Gandhi governments, and sensible educated players like Dr Jaishankar can bridge the mistrust between the countries and build a strong powerful relationship for the future.

In the 80s Indian govt betrayed us, but this doesn't mean we will let China to be a threat towards India too. China does not want friendly relations with other countries. It wants a master-slave relationship. Thankfully, the world is waking up and not falling into China's debt trap games. I might say that Dr. Jaishankar did not directly say it against Maldives, but the case is that when it was bad time for Sri Lanka with shortage of fuel & food, it was Bharat that sent Fuel & essential items to Sri Lanka. When IMF was putting difficult conditions on Sri Lanka, India had extended credit line of 4 Billion dollars without any conditions. In fact that shortage of fuel & food ensured that Rajapaksa went out of Sri Lanka. Also the pet project of Rajapaksa the Hambantota port that is now with china on lease because Sri lanka cannot pay back debt, but India was offered the airport (which was not required) near Hambantota, which was also built by by Chinese was given to India. That way if Wanted India can keep watch on Hambantota, Sri lanka also ensured that Chinese military vessels cannot use it as naval base. India feels that sri lanka, bhutan are our neighbours. We respect them and as big brothers we have to protect them and ensure their well being. Indians have gone to Sri lanka and do business. We helped sri lanka as neighbour & as our brother, expecting just good relations in return. Also tourist infra in Sri lanka is way better, the people more kind. Maldives has strong support for ISIS, there have been cases of terror funding. there was a case where a european couple had gone to Maldives and wanted to renew their vows, the hotel guy they asked did it, but he was actually abusing them in their local language throwing all sort of profanities, only when the video went viral that the couple were informed about the abuse. Strangely the hotel management said that this was joke. This was an insult. That was due to strong islamic influence in Maldives which has now gone into people. you will not find such thing in Sri lanka. Also in terms of infra, Sri Lanka has better infra than Maldives. Due to the abusing of our PM by politicians of Maldives, I would encourage people to go to Sri Lanka & help their economy than to go to Maldives.

I live in London, my driving instructor some 16 years ago was a nice Sri Lankan chap. My current boss is Srilankan. My occasional indulgence into sambar/idly at saravana bhavan, the owners are Srilankan. Good hardworking people like the rest of us all. When your country is a giant floating hotel, that lives off on tourists. It should've been your chapter 1 in the business book, to keep your opinions about your well paying guest to yourself, or at least a secret. It is true not only about India but about any other country. Don't go around poking fun of other countries leaders.

We warmly welcome this comment Hon Minister. Sri lankans are far more simple and warm hearted than their Maldivian neighbours. I have personal experiences in Male which prove this point even though I was one of a few Foreigners recognized by the Government of Maldives in 1998 for my efforts in transfering Technology to their Country, I had to on few instances remind their arrogant offcials that it was Sri lanka Air Force that sent tourists to Maldives when no international flights could go there due to lack of basic facilities. Most of them are a most ungrateful lot who have a warped idea that they are better that all Asians. when in fact they fall far behind. So welcome to sri lanka dear Indians we are still grateful to you for sharing your greatest son the Buddha with us, and also for the gift of the Sacred Bo tree, an event that took place over 2500 years ago. That is what real human gratitude is, This is what real friedship is. In closing I must mention that I am a great admirer of your dynamic Foreign Minister Hon S Jaishankar
