The strategy I use with the Peace Maker is to just SLAM on my brakes at the last minute so that I'm in 2nd place, then the Peace Maker wrecks the 1st place person and I then become 1st place. It only fails when you're so far ahead that nobody can pass you, but even then, you'll likely still be in 1st when you re-spawn :)

Listening to some of the soundtracks from Jak X from this video makes me miss the days were video games used to be fun & racing games used to use rock music to make the player more interested in the game. It's because of racing games such as Need for Speed Most Wanted or Burnout 3 Takedown for example is the reason why I became a fan of rock music in general. It's just a shame that not many people now days aren't into that kind of music genre & now listen to some generic pop/techno music. But I understand: different people have different interests. Jak X is kind of a "simple" game to talk about. It's an absolutely fantastic combat racer, and does what it sets out to do masterfully. With an excellent OST and great story to boot. But other than that, there really isn't much conversation to be had about the game imo. If I were to address one point you brought up about balance, I understand the criticism. Playing at your best shouldn't be undercut by some random element like a Peace Maker, as it can take away from the satisfaction of playing well. However, for me, I quite enjoy the chaotic nature of the games balance. Makes it more unpredictable, like you may be way ahead of the competition, but don't get complacent, you gotta stay on your toes, cuz that can be taken away at any time, and then you gotta take back first place. Keeps the game feeling fresh for me, especially after playing it so much. As for what Jak X represents for Naughty Dog, I agree that it's a great place for ND to leave the series. The 4 games they created are such an incredible piece of video game history, a time where triple A games could still be outlandishly creative, and made by relatively small teams. Jak is still the most creative and willing to take risks series I've ever played, and its design ethos is truly something to appreciate. I think if they kept pumping out more games, be they spin offs like they planned with TLF, or even a newer gen follow up, I think we'd all remember the series very differently. That being said, now that we've all had a lot of distance from the last title, I think ND returning to this world and characters, and doing something weird and creative with the series again would be pretty awesome. They weren't afraid of uprooting everything to create a one-of-a-kind experience with Jak 2, I think approaching a new game in a similar way would be pretty awesome, even if it wasn't strictly a platformer. I know I'm in the minority here, but I would much prefer that than a safe return that doesn't do anything risky with the property just to bank on nostalgia. Just my thoughts, great video as always my guy!

if you think about it in a way where, "what can i do about this random element to mitigate the impact it has on me?" suddenly, it becomes another element where you can demonstrate skill in. there's a few other comments talking about methods of doing just that. when there _is_ absolutely nothing you can do about it, it does suck. but when there are things you _can_ do about it, then there is room for improvement.

One thing to also add to the port job is that one thing I missed out on as a kid with Jak X was the online mode that got introduced in that game, so when they announced the PS4 ports back then, a lot of us were excited to see that get fully revived and brought back ... until they announced before launch that there would be no online service, basically making the port job pretty pointless if you already own the original PS2 release of the game. It also didn't help that bringing the games back didn't do anything new with the franchise as a whole, which makes me wish they didn't even bother with Jak X when one feature that was no longer around in the PS2 release that we were all hoping for ... wasn't going to come back along with the game on PS4, which just kind of shows how lazy and cheap Sony were and in a way they still are.

With remake/remasters being as popular as they are, and with how much money they make, I've always wondered why Sony never remastered Sly Cooper trilogy, Jak trilogy, or even Ratchet and Clank trilogy. I'd buy all three of those. Especially Sly Cooper as I played Sly 2 a lot as a kid, even if I never beat it because I was always stuck on that one level with the tiger boss. (This is from what I remember as a kid. I could be wrong about that being a level/boss) I also remember playing a lot of what I think was Jak 3, but I'm not entirely sure. I did also play Dexter, the spin off on the PSP, and I don't remember much about it.

If you're talking about remakes specifically, there was a remake of the 1st Ratchet and Clank, but it was moreso made as a tie-in to the movie about said game. But the project didn't recieve much development time or too much budget, which is why a lot of planets were cut. The remake was ok, but I would recommend the Original over it. To go back to your question, I have no idea if Sony wants to invest in remakes of big platformers, and the developer themselves are too busy with new IPs and projects. Look at Sucker Punch who are working on Ghost of Tsushima. With the Jak series, I feel like ND nowadays arent the same people who'd care about doing anything with the series. They're too stuck up on realistic and "serious" games already.

One thing I like is that in the multiplayer which you can play solo, you can customise the races, how many NPCs there are, how well the other racers play against you, and the best bit, you can actually modify which weapons and defences will appear, so you can have races where the Peace Maker just straight up doesn't spawn, plus it's useful for farming orbs, just make a death match against a single npc, make it so the yellow eco only spawns missiles and the red only spawns shields, it only takes like a minute to finish the match, just keep replaying it and the orbs just roll in.

What a game, so fun, so cool, with a great OST, tons of things to do and the classic Naughty Dog charm. One thing that happened is though that I was 9 when I got this game and this was was HARD for 9 year old me, when I was about 12 I was on the 3rd cup on the last race, final lap, all that jazz, final turn and I got blown up and lost. Normally I would just keep trying but this 3rd cup the final race of it is this long long long track that combines a bunch of tracks together and you start in these sewers and there's this crazy steep turn very early in and I just couldn't not do it properly 99% of the time and I either crashed in the wall and blew up or the other cars piled up and things got messy cause I went slower to try and turn properly. I didn't touch the game again for 8 years after that and then when I was 20 ish I dug it and my PS2 out and played the entire thing in one go and beat it finally, felt so good. This is definitely a sort of hidden gem of the PS2, people talk up the Jak trilogy and rarely bring this one up and it's a shame.

You're always improving you cars every step of the way and the fact that different vehicle types actually feel meaningful. The Weapons feel so right. With a clear distinction between offensive and defensive weapons. Dark Eco management and that amazing sense of relief when it activates when a missile would have finished you off. Health so you're not getting screwed over by every item. A proper boost gauge to keep the speed always going but not something you can just rely on every second and need to use smartly. Everything about the game is enjoyable. Not to mention it was attached to my favourite PS2 game series as a kid. With an actual good story for a racing game. @@joshshrum2764 minus the hovercraft that go as fast as a super sonic jet and only weapons is the vehicles themselves, yeah just like jak x lol

I remember playing it online. Never felt the weapons were unbalanced, but I guess i adapted. Regarding the peace maker, it was usual for the first place player to either stop or fully do an 180 to try and go down to second place just to not get blasted. The only car played in races was the Havoc v12, for battles people changed quite a lot but i remember only playing with sand shark and wining consistently. Takes me back. Great game

I remember playing this game as a kid I had to figure out how to save my data. The first time I found out my save was corrupted I panicked. And then I panicked EVEN MORE when I saw my whole memory card had corrupted saves. Eventually I found out you can save and then unplug the memory card and it just works. What made it worse for me is my PS2 was old and never got cleaned on the inside so the connectors for memory cards got super delicate, any movement and it can't read them. Still managed to finish this game tho. J&D have the best gaming series (except that one game) and I'm really glad there's a whole community working on remastering these to modern day. This series fucking rules

Never played this one, even though I love the Jak and Dax series. So a lot of this was new to me.

Its funny, rush hour is actually my favorite mode by far. Its so satisfying crashing into other cars and that snap as your car regains control. I find the best strategy for me is actually to use the fastest cars like the road blade not the armored ones. I also hold boost continuously the entire mode. The added speed seems to almost negate the force of each crash.

Fun fact: if you get gold in every event in the story mode, then start hero mode and get gold in all of THOSE events, which was crazy difficult, you get your turbo color changed to green while playing

Funny enough both Jak and Ty had a similar experience. They were both 3D collect-a-thons in the first game, but changed into mission based games starting in the 2nd, and then improved the combat in the third.

I used to be so good at this game that I used to read it over in a day. The next day would be hero mode, had the green eco boost and everything

18:05 maybe this doesn't matter as much outside of the speedrunning community, but the Jak HD Trilogy has what's infamously referred to as "the punch glitch." What this means is that every so often, for seemingly no reason, and mood likely on certain terrain than others (particularly in Jak 3), pressing square to punch would sometimes shoot Jak off in a random direction. Again, maybe not as significant outside of speedrunning, but I've definitely had one or two moments where I've had to restart entire missions (thanks Jak II) when an ill-timed punch glitch shot me off into the abyss. As much as I do enjoy the visual improvements the HD Trilogy provides (EXCEPT THAT KOR CUTSCENE. I always thought it was just my copy!), there's something to be said about the impact it has on the enjoyment of the game when you have to hesitate before using a core function to ensure it won't randomly cause you to take damage (or worse). Having that in the back of my head every time I punch definitely takes just a little bit of the joy out of it for me. (Also it irks me every time I play it through that they didn't update the eye textures in TPL. Everything else looks so crisp and the eyes are amorphous blobs with visible pixels and it just irks me. Makes me twitch.)

OH MAN now is good of a time as ever to get back into Ty The Tasmanian Tiger! Krome Studios just did HD Remasters of the first 2 games and is available on Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox and I'm currently playing through Ty 2. I recommend the PS4 versions the most because it has added motion control functionality and trophies, the platinum is relatively easy to get. They added so much to the first 2 games it's crazy. Side Note: I enjoyed the Ty 2 GBA port quite a bit as a kid.

Really wish they would remaster this game and increase functionality to include better overall online multi. It’s a criminally underrated game in a world where everyone’s addicted to Mario Kart.

I have the vita collection and completed them all! The biggest issue I’ve had with it was the frame rate. That’s really it though. The games are still playable once you get used to playing them on a handheld.
