First time I have ever disagreed with something Gary says. I have a patreon and one of my rewards is sending them a postcard with a hand written thank you. I do think it's a lot more special than sending them an email. I don't think loving a letter is demonizing a phone. The letter is more special than a text not because it's a letter, not because of the medium, it's because it's something you don't do all the time. We text ALL the time so it has lost its magic, when we decide to do things differently for someone (I.e. a letter) then that person feels more special because we did something different for them and not the same we do with everyone else. It's like having a partner, you do things differently with your partner because they're special, you might give all of your friends a chocolate bought in store, but you will then make it from scratch for your partner, not because it's the old school way of doing it but because it's different and it takes more effort. And that's of course the most important fact; hand writing a letter takes more effort than texting and thats another thing that makes the person feel so special when you spend that extra effort on them. Other than that, I love Gary Vee :)

@because Geek, I totally agree with you. I read through these messages to see if anyone else was with me on this. What make a letter special isn't the medium its the time. Its like what Gary talks about with responding to twitter messages with a video it shows you took an extra second for that person. A letter does the same thing, it shows you took an extra few minutes for the person which is huge!

Also, in a letter you use your very own personal handwriting which is way more personal than the standard text on phones, which looks the same on every phone. The emojiis also all look the same for everybody, when you write a letter you can use the space whatever way you want and draw emojiis and everything you want the way you want to. Plus, the letter has a more personal feel to it, because the person receiving it knows you physically touched the paper before and can store the letter in their home in a special place, on a phone that might be harder, well, you might screenshot the message, but you can easily lose your phone or it could be destroyed or because of a technical defect you could lose all your data. So yes, handwritten letters are more special and personal, not only because they got rare nowadays. Sry if bad English
@steven94th74

what if you send and receive 1,000 letters, they pile up somewhere in your house and collect dust. what then man. texting and letters are only as special as you THINK... it's all in the eye of the beholder, so you can think a text is special, you can think a hand written letter is more special, but what is life then, just a contest to see whats special or not? lol

It's hard to argue turning off is not important when your 19 years old, still figuring it out and feeling the pressure of over 10 million people on your back pressuring you to create and execute every single day. Gary you separate your personal and business life by never bringing home business shit to home life. You separate it by taking the weekend for your family. You talk about mental illness, depression and suicide often now but from what I've seen there's potential in many to fall into those things if you don't take the time for yourself and turn off. Not for all, for some. Jake may or may not be one of them. Also maybe I misunderstood but to me, hearing "I just do what I want to do and I never question myself or my actions" is effectively saying, 'don't think or question yourself before you take action'. Which we all know you do which is why it's confusing to me.

Every guru like V says they contradict themselves, but they can effectively be in both head-spaces and selectively play by play it, and it's up to us as viewers to do the same or just take what works for us and run with it. Whether V sees it as a marketing technique or not, bringing in a justification that allows a cyclical loop of investment (if a viewer even slightly accepts the notion and stays subscribed) he's done his job. He could say fucking anything and people would listen. The only real reason I'm personally subscribed is just because of his palpable urgency, I feel it valuable to be reminded of how quickly a decade will go by so I am proactive. Also, Jake Paul was quick to answer with a sense of decisiveness, but said nothing of value.

Personally, I love to get my phone going on video, focus it up, hold it steady and look at reality with my own eyes. I love making movies and to do that, you've gotta have the footage (as Casey Neistat says, Always Be Filming - SO TRUE), but there is something about experiencing it without staring through the screen and making sure the shot is perfect, and there is always a time when you can ditch the phone and just savour the absence from connectivity. That's my personal feeling, but I absolutely respect your view and I'm sure in a few years the demonizing of technology will fade gradually as we move onto the next new thing to fear.

Thanks for all the great info! If something keeps you up at night it should be addressed is going to be something I implement in my own life. I'm so tired of stressing over things I think can be minimized. I agree with the cross promoting, but learning how to effectively use the various social platforms while producing content consistently, and still be engaging has been a struggle. I am teaching myself how to use each platform (i.e. Twitter but the same tactics don't apply to each platform if you are referring to effectiveness). How do you manage all of the platforms, engage, market and produce content consistently? How do you decide where to put your focus (time to spend on each) when you are a blogger/vlogger online, not a tangible material product type business?

I don't think it's the medium that is elevated Gary, I think it is the attention behind it. It takes more effort to hand write a letter and mail it than to send a text. The extra attention that you are paying to the message delivery is what is elevated. You can be one of hundreds of emails or one of just a few letters.

I absolutely loved what you said about Grandma vs. Technology ... The vehicle or forum in which your message is conveyed shouldn't matter. The words you use to connect do! I actually prefer seeing someone's face... I can only tell how sincere or meaning what your saying to me is if i'm able to see your eyes. Certain forums will cater to certain people.. know your audience. How the person you are connecting with is going to HEAR you best, and in some cases fastest, should be the focus once you've determined what you want to say.

On the text message/writing letter thing: I think the idea most subscribe to is that it's so easy to fire off a text message. It's perceived that little to no thought went into the message. Writing a letter, at least for me, takes considerably more time, thought, and effort. I don't think it's the medium that's the issue, it's the sentiment behind it. (Perceived or otherwise.) Same thing when it comes to calling someone vs texting them. The message might be the same, but it's the extra few seconds that you took that NO ONE ELSE DOES that resonates. Shit, I've even typed - yes, on a typewriter - my initial correspondence to new or prospective clients. It helped my business stick out like a sore thumb. I'm sure as Photo By Bokey grows, it won't be as feasible. But at the moment, I've found it a worthwhile effort.

I love you Gary and just really started watching/listening to you- Ive purchased your latest book (audio) and on its recommendations, also purchased JAB JAB...Thank you for all the amazing content you provide. I am new to the marketing game- I quit my job as a FF/Paramedic, leaving my nice salary/benefits/pension behind after 11 years to pursue my passion of opening up my own brick and mortar Personal Training/Adult Gymnastic Strength/Nutrition/Meditation facility (I have been doing this part time, but lets face it- it ain't going anywhere if I'm being pulled in two directions). I hate taking orders and I cannot stand being somewhere I "have to be." So I'm jumping. Anyway, I must disagree with you on one point in this episode- the medium of pen and paper is not what "old school" players are nostalgic for. It's the perception of the time that it takes to put pen to paper, write an endearing message, fold it up, put it in the envelope, sign it and deliver it. THAT is what people appreciate- after all, it takes a minute to write a heartfelt message via email or text- it takes much longer to write a handwritten note (whether that is factually true is irrelevant. Some people appreciate handwritten notes because it took "TIME"). The younger generation might not appreciate it. But I guarantee, if I took the time to pick out beautiful stationary, write a loving message in beautiful penmanship, and hand it to my 55yo client, SHE would appreciate it. And there is the thank you economy. Nothing is ALWAYS or NEVER. You can always make more money, but you can't get back time. I heard that somewhere from an undoubtedly brilliant human. Keep rocking and I will keep listening and applying. I look forward to meeting you one day and thanking you for making me a gazillionnaire and not for my sake. I could give a crap about money for me. THAT success will be for my dad, who raised me on his own so that I have the option to make the decision I choose to make right now. If you do decide to check on my small company, I'm doing most of my "giving" on Instagram and Facebook. Thank you for the inspiration and the tools! My man...

Some brands go with big followers influencers, and big influencers ask for more money, but your risk is you your ROI may be low due to big influencers are big in numbers, not engagement. Whereas micro-bloggers may have a small following, but better engagement rates and are cheaper. All about the micro-bloggers in 2017, however like you said, content is key.

#QOTD: Turing off is like losing weight. Everyone says they want to lose weight, but very few have an exercise schedule written out, let alone have done it for more than 2 weeks. You need to ask yourself, "why do I want to turn off? Why is this important?" Could be mental health, happiness, maybe you think a little quiet will give you better business ideas. It is up to you, but it has to be something you care about. Otherwise, why turn off? Found a reason? IF not, then maybe you don't want to turn off. IF the answer is yes, then here's a tactic. If you really find it hard to turn off, and can't imagine saying, "fuck it, I'm offline for the next 6 hours!" Then start small. Turn off for 10 minutes a day. When you turn off, mark an x on a calendar or something. Psychologically, you ill be "succeeding" everyday by turning off for ONLY 10 minutes. Then, in the middle of turning off, if you want to do it longer, you can. If not, 10 minutes later you can get back on your cell phone. A Tim Ferris tactic that I stole and works very well for me, maybe it will work for you.
