SH2 isn't on gog unfortunately. The only way to digitally buy Silent Hill games is the original on PS3 or Vita, SH4 on gog, Short Message on PS5 and Homecoming and Remake on steam. It's incomplete and all over the place.

@@soliduswasright678eh I think the remake does a great job of keeping that surrealist fever dream aspect but in a different way imo.. Angela especially feels so much better in the remake compared to the og (to me anyway) bc she actually feels like a character going through extreme ptsd and the remake actor nails it. I also love that James has a lot more personality in the remake. I love og James but he was mainly a plank of wood in the original with almost no emotion and now I feel like I can actually tell what James is going through or thinking in a specific scene and it adds a layer to the story that I feel like wasn’t quite there in the og. But totally valid if you don’t feel the same way.. I’m honestly just glad that silent hill is being discussed so positively online since we haven’t gotten that in what feels like forever

I'm only about 4 hours in. I'd played and finished the original way back when and this feels so much like my memory of the original. Gameplay wise as well. I find myself reverting to certain gaming habits I haven't used in years because most modern games don't demand that much from a player. Feels good. Even the combat, bugs aside, takes me back. That tension. I smiled, Jake, when you said you used the stomp mechanic get the tension out. That's exactly how it is for me. Can't believe Bloober nailed this. Great hommage.

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite horror game I’ve never played. I rented it when it came out and it was a bit too scary for me back then. Since then I’ve watched tons of KZbinr video essays breaking down the themes and allegories of the town and monsters that inhabit it. I love psychological horror, it’s the scariest sub genre for me personally and I love how deep the lore goes. I’m an old fart now, and have gotten better at handling horror games, so this will technically be my first playthrough of SH2. A friend’s coming over to play with me, passing the controller back and forth, so it should be a great Friday. And yes Jake, the pizza is on me.

As a dev I said this when that first gameplay trailer came out the game actually looked really good which was shocking because of the studio behind it, but they were using placeholder assets which made me wonder why they were showing the game in the first place, but since they had no release date there wasn't any need to worry and people were exaggerating. The things that looked the worse of the game was the horrible blood particles when hitting a enemy which was probably a placeholder, obviously the sounds but they get replaced at the end of the development cycle and touched up continuously, and the last thing I said was they should get rid of the button prompt when fighting enemies and make the combat more like the last of us 2 which they did and they pretty much nailed it. What is the most surprising is how damn close they got to making it exactly like the resident evil remake games its like one for one and feels…like expertly done, which is crazy coming from bloober studio just very shocking to me they somehow made something of this quality, I didn't think it would be bad but I didn't think it would be like real triple A standard.

The normal enemies are a threat in this for sure. In the original you could run around 90% of the enemies. In the remake, they hide effectively, chase, and dodge/counter. Most every fight is tense. Also, Dead Space is great but you have so many weapons that the necromorphs are just fodder in a majority of cases.

I just encountred two single things that worked better for me in the original. 1. The Pyramid Head hospital chase: In the og game the chase was initiated by a camera switch revealing him just showing up around a corner direcly behind you (and as far I remember the only jump scare in the whole game). That didn't work as good now that the static cameras are gone. 2. The burning staircase: In the og game "for me it's always like this" could also be interpreted, that her purgatory-loop always resets by suicide. Now what she says seems to be more pointing out how she percives the world. Everything else was on par or even better. Love the new dialogue dircetion (except the mentioned expection) and how much more natural all characters feel.
@ians_parks
@ians_parks 8 күн бұрын
The bathroom door slamming after you knock on it and leave could be considered a jump scare. Also the mannequin that jumps out after as soon as you pick up the flashlight. There's also pyramid head just appearing in the labyrinth non nonchalantly as you explore. Or even that early lying figure that crawls out from under the car.
@br0adsw0rd65
@br0adsw0rd65 7 күн бұрын
@@ians_parks I have to admit that I don't rememer the door scene anymore. The scenes with the monsters you mentioned were foreshadowed by the radio static (not making them any less scary, just not unexpected jump scares). I only remeber almost losing control over my bladder twice in thr game: the first time when I just run by a corridor lamp (woodland appartments?) and a shadow manifesting suddely in front of me (it was my own shadow... the light souce was now behind me after all) and the second the sudden appearance of pyramid head in the hospital mentioned above.

I think the ONLY complaint i had was when i reached Marys letter monologue. I think the actress tried something new, and i appreciate that. But the last several lines in the original made me tear up EVERY time I've played it. There was something about how raw her emotions were that always resonated with me. I think that feeling was lost this time. Maybe bc i was expecting the line delivery to sound a certain way, idk Overall excellent game, especially if THATS my biggest gripe lol

Them being not 1:1 remakes means it CAN’T objectively be better. The difference in camera, VA direction, controls, etc. means that you can’t say it is an improvement in every regard. Those can very much be preferential and can’t really be measured. Now if it were a 1:1 like Dead Space or Dead Rising then you can make an argument. But for remakes like Silent Hill 2 or the recent Resident Evil remakes, I believe the games just have so many changes that are up to preference that you can’t measure them against each other

This is actually the first time I've played a Silent Hill game, I've only played a little bit of the original, but the fixed camera angles I couldn't really deal with, but I am loving the remake way more personally, it's so creepy, the enemies can be tricky, like you said, that you'd be used to their move sets, but then they surprise you when you least expect it, the puzzles can be a challenge at points, I'm loving the mele combat it feels really intense, this is such an incredible game! Bloober team did an amazing job on this, very pleased. The only minor nit pick I would say is, i wish they had released a deluxe physical copy release, with like a Pyramid Head statue or something, that would've been cool. Incredible game!

I really wish they didnt change the charectors though. There is a reason both of the ladies look like each other, and why one is supposed to hotter. That whole dynamic and the torment James goes through might be lost on new audiences, just thinking they happen to have similar names. I couldn’t remember all of the story beats. characters, and locations. It was like playing for the first time in a lot of ways. Now I’m 40 yrs old the game hit me differently too, having now experienced life, loss, and grief etc. I can relate to these themes more as an adult. Although I appreciated the series when I was a teen, it didn’t hit as hard. I hope we get remakes of the others. Bloober Team had a lot to prove, and they succeeded.

Interesting because, aside from this, which I like a lot, their only other game that I like is Blair Witch despite disliking the movie. I got bored of their other games. Granted, the game is not fun on Xbox because of the frame rate/pacing, but it's 60fps smooth on PS5. The dark wooded areas I enjoyed exploring; it had great sound design, and protecting the dog throughout was engaging. I like the SH2 remake more than the RE4 remake, and especially the RE2 remake, even though I like the original RE2 and RE4 more than the original Silent Hill 2.

The day before the pre-order early access, I decided to get the game, so I could play it on the night of the 5th (in the US). Downloaded it early, and the second it unlocked, I launched it up and started going. Been playing it every chance I get since then, though due to work and life stuff I can only manage an hour or two at a time. So far I'm about 19 - 20 hours into the game. Last night I finished the Prison, and the Abstract Daddy boss fight, and landed in the Labyrinth proper (at the Crossroads save point). I'm absolutely loving this game. I went in with extremely low expectations given Konami and Bloober's respective track records, and have been pleasantly surprised at every turn. I'm an avid fan of the original game. I'd say 2 and 1 are my favorites, maybe tied, but I think 2 wins out a little bit for me, and I've played it literally dozens of times - gotten every ending, gotten my glitch-less speed run down to about 50 minutes, read every single note and solved every puzzle on every difficulty, etc. etc. I love the original. That said, I genuinely think that this remake is an all around better game. From the graphics to the atmosphere, to the writing changes and performance capture, to the puzzles they've expanded, and how much love they've clearly shown for the original games (yes, games plural, they've added some subtle references to 1 and 3 as well). Love the way they've decided to handle replacing content, whether it's story or puzzle, and paying homage to the original through memories you can find, love how they've expanded things (with one exception: I wish the Abstract Daddy fight was slightly shorter, like maybe 25% shorter, but I absolutely love what they did with it). Love the new scenes with the side characters. I even love that the game is longer, and parts of it feel a little too long, because it adds to the feeling of being trapped in a place. It's just incredible. I will always love the original SH2, but this game is my new favorite SH game. Maybe one of my favorite games, period.

Loving it so far. Also, where they have remixed it a little I think the flashes work better as James is supposed to be winging it in the first place ie the bit where fixing the record for the jukebox the song triggers a flash and he decides to now go to rosewater park from neelys bar. I think it works better to be honest.
