I'm just disappointed how they change Mary's letter on the end of this game. We can't have women apologizing to men today lol even though that was the entire point to see how toxic the situation between the two was getting. Mary's voice acting is bad too. Original Mary's VA literally cried when she read that letter so the new one is just terrible in getting that point across. I still remember the original performance vividly two decades later but this would just be so forgettable.

I think the combat is great, but the issue is that they give you too much of it. It's fine when it's in spurts where you're fighting one enemy that scared you, but fighting 5 monsters in a room back to back at times makes you feel exhausted.

It had a mediocre impact when the original actor for Mary poured her emotions out literally reading that letter on In water ending it's bit of a bummer personally to see the ending just become so dull to me in the modern remake. Also it's hard to ruin a remake as long as you're genuinely trying to recreate the game. Everything is literally made for you just have to modernize graphics and visuals but maybe you can't quite hit the details as evident by this - it's good a remake but you can't recreate everything perfectly. @burtkocain68463 сағат бұрын
@HamburgerWasteland I know 2 is the darling but SH3 is my personal favorite. Heather's a way better protagonist and 3 is by far the actual scariest Silent Hill. The only thing that suffered to a degree was the story, although it was still good. If they can remake 3 and improve the story, I think it could catipult it ahead of 2 and make it recognized as the best Silent Hill.
@BeagleBabSkyeСағат бұрын
My only complaint with the combat is the very first enemy. In the original game, when you see the first Lying Figure, it doesn't fight back at all, putting more on the psychological aspect of "Was this a real person or some creature created by the town?" Now, in the remake, the Lying Figure actually does fight back which takes away from the psychological aspects of game since we know that the enemies are related to the psychosis of James in some regard. I haven't gotten that far only because my controller now has major stick drift and I have to spend a good bit to get a new one or you know... be having James move left a lot when I'm not doing anything. But from what I've seen and heard, yeah it is really freaking good. I was hesitant cause Bloober Team haven't been good in the past with their portrayal of psychologically, mentally fucked characters and other controversies but I can say without a doubt this has been a good addition to my collection of games. (Edit:) I realized I left out something about the original that I haven't progressed far enough into the remake to see yet. In the original game, when you go back to where you killed the first enemy, there's police tape around the area blocking it off as if some horrific crime has taken place. Again, this plays into the psycho-analyzing of the characters and if what happened there really was real. That's why I started this initial complaint but I'm hoping it'll be there still in the remake.
@DementedViewСағат бұрын
Not only that but James isn't exactly cornered here, so it doesn't make sense for him to just fight. He has room to run where as in the original he would have to crawl out of the tight spot he's in.

I personally have had a lot of fun with the gameplay, but thats my ape brain i love both very complex combat but i also love getting really good at really simple combat. and i also discovered that you can easily separate the enemies then do a one on one fight then sneak past and do things like that too. I personally had never seen the health icon on the bottom right until i watched Charlie, i don't even know how that's possible this dude is a menace in every other game but this simple combat somehow managed to beat him.
@Lost_Signal.3 сағат бұрын
The combat in this game is perfect. They didn't want James to be a Rambo type. He is a regular guy fighting insane creatures. He doesn't know how to fight or shoot very well. It was a decision by the developers to make him fumble when fighting. That to me is how the game and combat should be.

I think he is talking about the animations. But still I think bloober did a good job with it, since it's challenging to animate an inexperienced person with melee combat abilities.
@dsouthmonster2 сағат бұрын
I have to agree with you completely on the constant combat. My qualm was that I wished there was more healing or as much healing as I find bullets. I can't think of any point in the original when I've ever had to use a fraction of health potions/ampule as I do in just one area of the remake. I love it, and I'm generally OK at getting away or taking out without getting attacked BUT 99% of the time I either was getting clipped or healing just to have all my health get ripped right back down. I can't tell you how many times I desperately needed health one hit from the end, found something to heal, and then immediately got attacked by an enemy negating that health and time I spent looking for it.

They nailed sound and atmosphere. I agree that the voice acting is better. There are certain scenes in OG SH2 that are kind of cringe or just funny, like Angela asking you if you’re gonna love her towards the end. At the same time, certain scenes lost emotional impact IMO. For example, I actually like Prison Maria’s talk in the OG version more. The “I’m not your Mary” has more bite in the OG, the whole scene is more…sinister. The new VA went a different way. Another example is Mary reading her letter during the ending. In the OG, she is about to cry, you hear her voice break several times. You don’t hear this with the remake’s VA. I have more examples but I’ll stop there. Lastly, 100% agree the bosses were better than the OG. Really liked what they did with the finale, compared to the OG. Edit: I did have some stutter and like 3 spots with bad bad frame drops.

I've been a huge fan of the SH series ever since my uncle first introduced me to it as a kid. Silent Hill has been the only game of it's kind and piece of entertainment that has given me true nightmares, and the one character that struck fear and dread into my eyes and mind was Pyramid Head. Seeing a figure with tall posture adorning a rusty and heavy pyramid helmet while holding a bloody rusty sword the size of a door was enough to make me not want to play the game for a long time but I was also wanting to play it to conquer my fears of the overwhelming dark and freaky monsters that are in the game that freaked me out as a kid. Because of how much Silent Hill scared me and gave me nightmares, it became my all time favorite video game franchise to play, not only because of the scary and otherworldly monsters you fight, but the story of it all to why you're there in the first place and the symbolism that's hidden in alot of the monsters and the story itself. Yea the puzzles can be a bit annoying and tedious to deal with but that's honestly how all SH games have been. I've played just about every SH game except for part 4 or SH: The Room cuz i just couldn't really understand it that well and where it took place in the franchise but overall, every SH game has had difficult puzzles that have you spinning your head and going through different loops to figure out what's what and they've never really had a large variety of enemies you encounter. There's a good handful of some enemy types in the games that are out there but they're not meant to feel different every time you encounter them because then it would make it more difficult to combat those enemies if they just kept changing their approach or attacks which is why the devs keep it one way so when you do encounter them for the 5th or 6th time, you'll already know how and be prepared to deal with them better and more effectively. Im just really happy that the Silent Hill series has been resurfaced after a long time staying in dormancy. It's a franchise that imo is highly underrated and deserves more recognition because there's no other psychological horror game like Silent Hill that does what it does best and that's giving a great story in a horrifying and sad way 🔥.

Silent Hill 2 remake was technically my first SH experience(i played the first one for like 30 minutes over 15 years ago),so i knew nothing other than what i gathered from the 2006 movie. And i gotta say its already one of my favorite games ever. Such a deep and interesting story,both with the character drama and the lore behind the demonic presence. the Sound design,voice acting,the mocap,the atmosphere,graphicly one of the best looking games ive ever seen,and just so much more good about it. New game plus also adds so much replayablity for different endings and just to have fun. Also side note,i played silent hill homecoming after finishing the remake,and it was cool to see that bloober team took inspiration from all the games apparently. the very first tutorial puzzle in homecoming is much easier version of the x-ray puzzle from the remake. You find a xray that has a code on it that needs to be combined with the other xray on the wall. They mustve borrowed from other SH games as well i would assume. So i can easily say ill be buying all the SH games i can and beating them all!!

This game was truly exceptional. However one aspect that I found less than satisfactory was the navigation. As Charlie mentioned maneuvering through certain parts of the game was quite challenging particularly the hospital section. This was the one area in the entire game that consumed a significant amount of time due to the difficulty in finding my way around. I eventually managed to progress with the aid of a KZbin video which I played alongside the game for guidance. I must admit the hospital section was quite demanding in terms of navigation. The challenge was not only in finding your way around but also in solving puzzles and locating the key passwords for these puzzles. Furthermore you had to collect various items to complete a puzzle all while fending off monsters. This was particularly difficult without the chainsaw which is only available after completing the game and starting a new game plus. Without the chainsaw it takes numerous hits to defeat some of the enemies even on the easiest difficulty level. Consequently your health is significantly depleted leaving your character on the brink of death and your screen bathed in red. This necessitates the use of a healing item as it becomes nearly impossible to discern what's on the screen. Despite the challenges posed by the hospital area I thoroughly enjoyed the game. There are far more positive aspects to appreciate than negatives. I would unequivocally recommend this game for purchase. It successfully creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere delivering a uniquely uncanny gaming experience.

There is one part of the remake that is inarguably worse than the OG, SPOILER ALERT: Mary’s letter. Mary’s letter is one of the most heartbreaking performances ever delivered in a game, to this day it is unrivaled. Monica Taylor Horgan was on the verge of tears while reading it, and listening to it, we were all having our own “in water” ending but the lake was our tears. You CANNOT listen to the last stretch of Mary’s letter and hear the warbling of Monica’s voice and not feel chills down your spine and an all-consuming sadness. Mary’s original voice actor delivered two of the most haunting, harrowing performances the medium has ever seen, and I can’t help but feel that the remake, for all of the great qualities it has, fumbled the ultimate gut punch the story has been building up to. It’s a fine read, but it lacks the rawness Monica’s performance had. While the contents of the letter are incredibly depressing in their own right, it’s Monica’s performance that made it soul-destroying.

What I would add to combat is a block and a quick melee and a slow, heavy melee attack (each from original silent Hill 3 and 2, respectively) as it would keep things pretty simple and would provide more options than attack or dodge with melee. The fetch-questy nature of the game was a thing in the original but because these environments are much bigger and more complex it can become more tiring. I love this game and I love the original
