1:43 To speak to this, my dad still plays Xbox 360. He bought me Black Ops 2 for Christmas when I was a Junior in high school and I ended up leaving my xbox and games there for him when I moved out because I knew he was intrigued. To this day he’s still playing Black Ops 2 and recently beat Red Dead. When I come home and see him playing, I’m amazed at how well the 360 still holds up- even on a larger display. The games still look good, the controller is still amazing, and it can still bring joy to people. Meanwhile I’ve spent thousands on new consoles, PC’s, etc just to scratch a fading itch. There’s still life in these old consoles, so it’s no surprise people still play PS4. That thing is still awesome.

My favourite thing growing up was getting a copy of a new gaming magazine and browsing the screenshots you couldn't get anywhere else. My favourite memory was getting the lego Indiana Jones cover magazine. I was a kid and I couldn't find any info on the game and then that happened to be the cover story that month. I was so excited and I stared at those screenshots for a full year before actually playing the game. It was a wonderful time and I believe it's on us as gamers and purists to support companies still fighting for physical media and actual genuine journalism. I stay in South Africa, so our equivalent to game informer is a magazine called NAG and they put so much love and care into the magazines but because revenue is so low they only bring a physical one out every 6 months but nothing beats the feeling of holding a magazine and reading it on a comfy chair with a cup of tea or coffee.

For Game Informer covers specifically I remember the January 2005 Snoop Dogg GTA clone cover. A game that I would've loved to have been finished. My all time favorites though were the two times that Starcraft: Ghost made the cover of Xbox Magazine (August 2003 and April 2004) only to never ever come out. Speaking of Xbox Magazine I remember growing up getting those issues with the demo discs every month. For YEARS from the very first issue up until they stopped including demo discs that was my favorite thing. I found out about so many games I would never have been interested in purely because they were included on those discs. I even discovered the band +44 because for the Tony Hawk Project 8 issue they included the music video for When Your Heart Stops Beating on there. I also remember copying articles word for word about games I wanted my friends to play through AIM. Video game magazines in the early and mid 2000s were certainly a very large part in why I was informed from such a young age and why I continue to follow video game news as an adult.

Was Game Informer available in the UK? For me the main magazines were Official Xbox Magazine and GamesMaster. The excitement of those covers! Pouring over the images, taking in every word. Possibly sacrilegious at this point but I’d also cut some up to decorate things with the art. I like being able to access more voices on videogames and enjoy the video format, not least because I feel I can get an even closer sense of gameplay. But there was something about the way those magazines collected all that information, enjoying the authors’ takes on things, that’s missing from screens. Videos are much more passive as the viewer, but reading is active and - at least for me - puts my imagination into a game much more. And with some games that is more fun than the game itself. Hope those at Game Informer land on their feet. Here’s to print media!

I actually do remember, when I was little, we used to have to drive up to a P.O box, and I'd be excited to get the game informer magazines, there was one night where we drove, and my mom came out, got in the car and tossed me the magazine with Spider-Man 3 as the cover. I held onto that for a long time, I still have the insomniac Spider-Man PS4 cover game informer, and a couple others, I'll be holding onto them forever now. That really sucks to hear about this, and screw GameStop for not wanting to officially recognize the people and the situation. Game informer was a huge impact on my gaming interests.

Game informer was and always will be my favorite source for gaming news. I remember reading about gta4 before I saw any gameplay and them talking about cover shooting and physics especially in the driving. I never got more excited for a game. Along with uncharted 1 preview and finally the last of us before it had any attention. Beautiful.❤

I used to subscribe to a magazine called play. The late 2000's. I loved their optimism about the industry and they were just so positive.

I remember being a kid and going to magazine isles when my family went grocery shopping. I'd always catch up on gaming news and get hyped up from game informer, Nintendo power and I think ign? Those were the days. But ever since getting a smart phone years ago I can literally see the news immediately. Hell look at capcoms monster hunter, they're releasing weapon trailers daily now and i can see first hand the new awesome changes to mhw!

A lot of people bought PS2s for the DVD player since they were cheaper then a standalone DVD players. Game Informer did not fullt embrace / shift to electronic media and thus were losing tons of money monthly buy printing a magazine. SEO crap also drowns proper media and it is difficult to get views.

Hey Jake! Perhaps a massive ask, but since the FPS pod is doing a newsletter now, any chance on an annual publication recapping the year and a physical combo of the newsletters? Love that you all try to peserve gaming legacy, and knowledge, so just an out there thought. Thanks for what you do. Beers on me, cheers

RIP Game Informer. I know it wasn’t *that* long ago but my favorite GameInformer was the one that featured Destiny The Taken King info leading up to the DLC release. So much hype and such cool concept art in it.

Dude I remember how stoked my friends and I were when Gameinformer released the first info and screenshots for oblivion. We were in high school just drooling over that issue. I went through my box of gameinformer magazines yesterday. I really wish I didn’t throw out so many older issues. The oldest one I have now is the God of War 3 issue.

My favorite covers from like the last five or so years have been the one with all the PlayStation characters on the gray backdrop for the 25th anniversary, the one with Sephiroth for the FFVII Rebirth coverage, and the one with Jill for RE3 remake.

I don't remember the last Game Informer I got, but I know it was from some GameStop deal. This reminds me of being a kid subscriber to OPM, Official Playstation Magazine. Getting a new PS2 demo disk was awesome. That's long gone, and seeing more go stings.

I lived in France most of my life, so I never really knew of their work, but seeing the footage in the Game Informer archives made me smile, only passionate gamers would label their archive cases "Vault 93" and such. Sad day for games media as a whole.

How is Jedi Survivor coming to last gen when they haven't even bothered optimizing it for current gen?

The two covers that I remember most were Bioshock 1, and Assassin’s Creed 1. Those intense yet muted colors are burned into my mind.

I'm primarily a PC gamer, but I do have a few old PlayStations so I can play games that aren't on PC on original hardware. I only recently picked up a PS4 Pro, so I can catch up on Sony's exclusive titles from the "last generation" that I missed out on. I still have plenty to play through, so I don't see myself picking up a PS5 anytime soon; at least until there's enough of a backlog of exclusives to warrant the purchase.

It is really a shame. I remember in high school, I would bring issues of game informer to read when I was bored. Classmates would often huddle around looking at all the images and it would spark conversation about new games and how exciting they were. I distinctly remember pinning almost everything RE4 that was in GI up on my walls. Say goodbye to an era.

I’m playing Jedi Survivor now and I’m halfway through the story (I think). It’s a beautiful game and I like the story, and it captures the Star Wars world amazingly well. But it also has huge issues with navigation that are so frustrating that it’s made me give the game a break several times, because they take away so much from the enjoyment.

RIP physical media! I think it’s so wack that the website was nuked man I subscribed to game informer after your recommendation and I have the same ones you do lol but man so sad I’m old I guess. I’m 28 and some people never even heard of MGS

In 2005-2007, i was really into Apple Podcasts and would routinely listen to the EGM and XBM (w/Major Nelson and Ryan Mccaffrey). 'Member' when you'd get those free demo CD's of 3-4 games in those magazines too? This was b4 Xbox 360 allowed u to download the demos....whatever happened to that??? Miss those days 😢

EGM was the best print gaming mag. And then Official Xbox Magazine. Helped me stay informed while doing a bid...
