I once read in a Hoyt manual that they recommend a minimum of 15-20 twists and a maximum of 1/2 twist per inch (62" bowstring equals 31 twists) in a bowstring. BCY recommended 1/2 to 3/4 of a twist per inch of bowstring. I built my own strings, and ones with fewer twist are in general noisier and harsher when shot, regardless of the material.

you beat me Sergicebrianarc! .. good explanation on a subjet that is seldom explained. I only put turns in pursuit of correct brace height, but now i know that the roundness is important for consistent string behaviour and also for sound tunning . Thanks!

I already had a new string on order because my 72" Uuhka limbs are crazy loud and I'm going to try a fastflight string over my current 8125G because my research showed a lot of people have the same issue with the new S curve 72" Uuhka's and fastflight seems to quiet them down. But I also had noticed my current string isn't perfectly round either, so that sounds like that's not helping either. I had my current 8125G string made to order as per Uuhka's own website specifications but now I think it was made too short without enough twists in it because to run the recommended brace height the string had flat spots. I put more twists in it and it got rounder, still not perfectly round, till I was at the maximum brace height Uuhka recommends. That did quiet the bow down a bit but not as quiet as it should be. So your video does indicate that I was on the right track but not for the right reason.

oh god, I just have (way) too many string slaps recently and do not know why, and yes, I did change my brace height for the tunning and dont think it can cause such issue, thank you for pointing it out

There is also the Scruton effect to the string when twisted, it will go smoother through the air with less turbulence.

Hey Jake! Do you make your own bowstring or do you purchase it from a manufacturer? If so, could you recommend us a manufacturer or two that you think we could try out? Thank you!

Hi Jake, is there a certain direction of twisting that is specific to which hand that we draw with?
@SheldonGoh2 жыл бұрын
Just to tag along on this question - is the direction of twisting the string and direction of serving the center serving thread related to the direction your hand will twist the string when releasing it during a shot? Also, how does twisting the string more or less affect the center serving? I would assume twisting the string more would reduce the string diameter a bit - does this affect the quality/tightness of the serving? Thanks!

Twisting : direction : centre serving - GRIV & Chris Bee’s Podcast called “BEECAST” episode #28 with Tim Gillingham, you can find on Apple podcasts. A detailed explanation on how twisting & serving, the direction and tightness affects arrow flight . An eye opener that actually taught me differentials at the rudimentary level. It’s an hour and 45 minutes long and worth every second.. explains more than one can consume about string geometry.. Happy shooting !!

The myth of adding twists from one end or another is well known, but what do you think about the direction of the twists, clockwise or counterclockwise in relation of being right or left handed?

Hi Jake, thank you for this video and all the others! Could you do a video strictly on vibration dampening? You briefly mention this throughout your videos when talking about stabilisers, brace height, etc. Given that the rules have now changed so that barebow can use dampeners, it seems like a good area to cover. Mostly I'd like to know, does any dampening have an effect on arrow flight or scores? My guess is "no" because the arrow has already left the bow. My RevX stabilisers don't even have external dampeners though I've noticed Brady has added some to his. Any help is much appreciated.

Does it make any difference, whether you twist the string left or right?

Good video but you showed us to many twist and no twist but nothing in the middle. So if I have enough twist so I can’t separate the two haves and my brace height is ok I’m good?

Hi Jake, many thanks for this interesting video. I shoot a HOYT Epik handle with HOYT Formular Velos and I use a BCY 8125 string with 42# on the fingers. How much strands would you recommend to build the string with? The nock is a BEITER #1. Thanks in advance!
@justinvzu012 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend getting a Spectra 652 Fast Flight string instead on Velos. That'll get the most speed out of those limbs. I think both should be 18 strands though.

In french Canadan archery You should never twist your string! If you want a shorter string buy a new one or tie a knot. If you want a longer string you can fire the bow without an arrow. It helps condition the fibres.
