Im super jealous of the shop and all the tools you have access to. Man I wish I had them too. I got scrape and save to buy all my tools.

+fedorvoorhees I started over 4 years ago and all I had was a set of hand files and a homemade vise. I have saved and spent all of my money on tools and supplies over the years.

Beautiful knives Jake, I wouldn't mind having one but I live in the uk and not only would the shipping make it expensive but I would end up having to pay VAT which is value added tax on it as well, I would love to have a shop like yours with all them tools in, you have obviously got a flare for knife making so keep up the good work

you may want to grind off all the file grooves after you anneal the files . when you forge it into a knife, the file ridges make hundreds of stress crack areas and the blade can break.

I would imagine that it traps air...? I just forged my very first knife today at 6:15pm....so my exp is limited but am I right? unless he gets it up to welding temps?
@bill6262
@bill6262 7 жыл бұрын
If there is any rust or junk in the grooves, it will not forge weld together with the rest of the blade, and there is a pocket of garbage material inside the metal then. The grooves are tall enough to fold over and trap the rust and junk. Jake is making a knife shaped object, then using the stock reduction method (grinding to get the taper shape) instead of forging the taper on the blade. This grinding probably takes out all the bad metal, but I like to use the hammer to make most of the taper. By forging the taper, you compact the steel even more and make a very dense grain structure, which i think makes a better knife.

very nice....I just forged my first knife today...used the old brake drum style...rail road iron anvil...I used rebar because its pretty much useless unless your building a wall......lol....and its cheap...find it almost anywhere....anyways...its not bad....its actually kind of peaceful ....it takes you away to your own world you know what I'm saying? Anyways good work....I'm going to try to attempt a leaf....yep a leaf. Maybe something keychain size I don't know yet

I heard files are good and also bad? people say their too brittle...other's say it hard to put an edge on them...Now leaf spring steel on the other hand...never heard ANYTHING bad on leaf spring steel. Not sure if you have access to such metals? Maybe junk yard...scrap yard? I've priced some of that sv30 stuff....wow that shit is expensive! I think I would only use that metal if I was making a knife for myself or maybe a close friend you know

+Robert Snelling that's awesome man, I just started forging a few weeks ago too. It's a great stress relief. Rebar is a mild steel and can not be hardened but it's great practise
@JakesCustomKnives
@JakesCustomKnives 7 жыл бұрын
+Robert Snelling it's all in the heat treat, even the best steel in the world will not hold an edge if your heat treat is wrong. Leaf springs are great! The newer steels have very complicated heat treats and could never be done in a forge. Files make great knives!

yeah I use rebar for ideas and new designs to make sure they come out right....if not..then no big deal it just rebar....I will continue to do this until I have more confidence in my forging hahaha
