That's pretty nice sorry to see the anvil not holding.. But I am sure you knew that was going to happen. What happened to the tongs did you quench them in water because they were to hot to hold? The way they broke looked like they were quenched . Maybe it happened when you were HT the last project. You should check out the grain structure on the tongs to see if the got hard or since they are already brokeben smack them with a hammer to see if they break again. For tongs one should use a steel that doesn't take a hardness. Like mild steel just a suggestion.Next time since you tend to use unknown steel for blades you should try a Diferential HT using clay of furnace cement so you could try and get a hamon line rather than the good old mustard trick.. @snek89547 жыл бұрын
Jason Brooks he made a video with him building an anvil you can watch that
@zhookeeper7 жыл бұрын
Mig I saw the original video. Wondered if there was any thing he would change in hindsight, or if it was just weld quality that caused the fail. I'm planning on stacking vertically to have more solid steel under hits, but that might make it more likely for my welds (and my crappy welding) to shear off. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5rSfJl4j5Jshqs
@danielclark36867 жыл бұрын
Grind a bevel on all edges before welding. Makes for deeper penetration and more weld to hold after sides are ground.

You'd get a lot less spring from your hammer if you had a wood shaft in it. It'd hammer through the steel instead of bouncing as much as it is..

@blitsriderfield40996 жыл бұрын
if you mean for the quench, i'm pretty sure he put it in oil. It cools the blade slower than water, which is better, but I don't exactly remember why. the only thing is, if it's too hot, it could shoot fire into the air
