Job fairs are a great way to find companies and talk to real employees. In this vlog I talk about my experience at Silicon Milkroundabout as both a person looking for a job and a person representing a company looking to hire.

I'm a couple years behind Jake, I'm currently in my second year of University but watched Jake before starting, somewhat as what to expect and love that he's continuing to help with what I need to prepare for in the coming years

I've been on the hiring side of career fairs. They're exhausting. You speak to hundreds of people and only have a couple minutes each to determine whether or not to 'recommend' them to a recruiter back at the office. I'm technical, but a lot of the people who staff career fair booths are not, so asking them 'what would I do' means they can't answer because they don't always know. Standing out at a career fair is all about being personable and expressing interests and skills that align with a list of things the company is looking for, but the people evaluating you at a career fair aren't always equipped to understand the topics and needs. It's more like a screening stage than an interview - Are you someone we should talk with or not? That's as deep as it goes.

I'm a UX Designer and been to the SMR twice. Its great but you're bang on money when you talk about how vague they all are about the basics. I once spent 20 minutes queuing to speak to a Travel aggregator company, only to find out 20 seconds into their pitch that they were based in Berlin.

Jake, perhaps make a video talking about what you're looking for in a job. It's obvious that job satisfaction rates very highly, but what does that entail for you? This might help if any headhunters happen to be watching your videos.

Recruiters are a great way to find a job, they can be super nice and helpful. Some can be quite pushy. I had a terrible experience with one. He sent an application on my behalf to a company after contacting me. I later asked him some more in-depth questions about the position, then asked him to retract my application as I was not interested in the job due to the pay/location. He was super offended and asked me VERY uncomfortable questions about my previous jobs, their pay, my current offers etc... and he didn't even retract my application, so I had a call from the owner of the company the next day and had to explain that this position wasn't the right fit for me. So uncomfortable.

Not going to the job fair shirtless was probably the right decision. ;). Jake is looking fit, which reminds me I need to get back to working on my fitness. Another KZbinr “Captain Joe” who makes videos about being a commercial aircraft pilot recently did a series of videos about getting in shape for a big fitness event. It was an interesting departure from his usual content. Jake could contemplate something like that if it is of interest to him. My software remembers a list of recently used files and paths. Obviously that is machine learning. ;) It was interesting to get Jake’s take on this event from both sides of the recruiting table.

As a non-techie I'm pleased to find insiders also find it difficult to discover what tech businesses actually DO. It seems like most IT companies are start ups with a handful of desk slaves to develop product. Ok if you're a partner, less fun if you're looking for a balanced lifestyle.

Jake mate, just be an bloody entrepreneur! You're obviously trying to avoid alienation - despite your admirable pedantic job-seeking ethic, unless you get unrealistically lucky, it is highly unlikely you will find a form of labour that satisfies you under someone else's stewardship. Just carve out an existence of your own - work 12 hours a day for the next four weeks on creating your own path and commit to that. It's painful watching you trying to mash and cram your spirit into an uninspiring keyhole that will yield nothing but a false climax. "Man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognise that it is he who is asked" - Viktor Frankl.

I’ve always been told that as a Cambridge graduate the jobs come to you, is that just a myth then would you say?
@jakewrightnet
@jakewrightnet 7 жыл бұрын
There's probably some truth in that but it's not that easy. I think having a Cambridge degree makes it easier to get noticed and easier to get interviews. Once I'm in an interview though, I'm on my own, the degree doesn't matter anymore. I also think that as time passes, the Cambridge "advantage" diminishes-recent experience becomes much more relevant.
