Bootcamp & A-school can definitely make a man fall off that horse if they aren’t laser-focused towards what’s necessary for his own goals. I appreciate you putting yourself out there, Brandon. This will definitely help some young guys who PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL, and take the advice of those who have gone before them.

I’ve always viewed the SEAL’s as top of the food chain. The mental fortitude, physical requirements, and pure will to succeed just speaks volumes as to what these soldiers are made of. I remember wanting to join the marines in high school, but I was too busy partying and chasing girls. I attended college afterwards and I’ve always regretted not joining the service. I have nothing but respect for our men & women in uniform. I was a terrible runner and never would’ve survived in special forces, lol. Great videos for those of us who can live vicariously through you. Mad respect. 🙏🏾👊🏾🤙🏾😎✌🏾

I am a retired Navy Seabee and always appreciate the sacrifice of the Seals. I was thinking that the Navy should be grateful for the mentoring you are doing for future BUDS participates. I would think the Navy would want a higher success rate. Just the money savings. Training isn’t cheap.

He can upgrade that discharge. These days, it is easier. I have counseled veterans who served with these discharges. No guarantees, but he might have a case for upgrade to general discharge. Great interview. Thanks to the guest. Thanks Jake for doing this for military special ops aspirants.

I was in the National Guard did OSUT at Ft Benning in 1991, I think being exposed to that for the first time is not easy, I know it is not the same or close to Seal training, I don't remember losing anyone, a couple guys tried to get medical discharges but that started in reception. About when we were about to graduate, everyone in the National Guard gets told (at the time anyway) we can go active duty and they can void any contract we signed with the Guard. You are fired up at that point, you just completed this and you look back and think it wasn't that hard, we watched some video's on Ranger school, and you get even more fired up. They even told us if we do that we can get a guaranteed spot in RIP not sure if it is still called that (Ranger Indoctrination Program) think it was 3 days. I was 6'3" 240lbs one of the few guys to gain weight in Basic and AIT, but I was feeling pretty invincible. I had one Drill Sergeant that was pretty down to earth. He didn't talk me out of it but said he was being honest, he said you are up on everything, you are pretty squared away, but what you see in the videos are the good parts of Ranger school, we talked for a while about it, he wasn't putting me down, just trying to explain what I would be getting myself into. As pumped up as you are just having someone say that, made me think back, there were times I did want to quit in basic and AIT, I will admit I had a couple breakdowns. Sometimes people need to hear that and these types of stories. There is little room or error or doubt in those types of programs. You have to be in the proper frame of mind. Like that guy was saying you have to know your priorities, and if you are not ready for it, you are not going to skate by, they may let somethings go in Basic and AIT, when you get to that next level you really have no excuses. Obviously I didn't do it, was there a chance I could have passed, maybe but probably very slim. I think I have met more people that didn't make it through Ranger school, then people that did. That is why Seals, Rangers, etc get that respect. Another note, I went back to my unit and my first or second time drilling with the unit, one guy showed up to the platoon room, everyone is calling one guy duffle bag shuffle, didn't know what was going on, he got to go to Air Assault school he went and less than a week later he was out, no secret it was no motivation. In a Guard unit that didn't get many slots for schools at the time, everybody knew. I will tell you what, if you try your hardest, you get injured, something goes wrong it is one thing, everyone will try to understand, but no mo, forget it.

Funny you mentioned living quarters as it reminded me of a friend who worked with me in corrections who mentioned inmates cells were larger than his living quarters in the Navy, along with being vastly cleaner. Inmates would complain about living quarters and he would just laugh saying they had no idea how good they had it! He would say his Navy experiences were all about the smell of FAB. Been watching your videos, I'm on the pdf (will be sending email regarding that) but from what I hear other people talk on your channel here is a formula to become special operations (doesn't matter seal, ranger, green beret, pj whatever) It's just my personal opinion and observation of a pattern that I wanted to share here but Jake please correct me if you think my way of seeing this is wrong or not true. 1. Gotta want it like nothing else in the world. Can't allow them bad thoughts to creep into yo mind 2. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Can't be prepared and recovered enough. (especially if you go seal gotta get back in shape after bootcamp) 3. Don't do no stupid shit that can hurt you, get you kicked out of pipeline or get you outta your game. Like Jocko said Discipline = freedom 4. Pull that trigger. Take it easy, relax, have fun with it.

Good stuff. I spent plenty time in the goon squad as well, in 228. I was a better than average runner in the class, until I got some gnarly ass blisters on my heels in Indoc which got progressively worse over the weeks. One time I finished dead last coming back from a conditioning run, was dehydrated AF and just needed a damn drink, but the whole class was already in formation next to the boats for surf passage by the time I got back, so I couldn't even hydrate. That was the one day I couldn't raise the boat over my head for shit during surf passage or for boat PT. That also happened to be the ONE time that chief Lemieux or whatever his name was, was one of the instructors for the evolution. That dude pulled me out from under the boat and told me to get in the fetal position. It was such a damn joke because all I needed to do was hydrate. Seriously pissed me off, but that one instructor thought I was SUCH a piece of shit because evey time he saw me, I was either fucking up or just in a shitty situation. It's why we could never, EVER got along IRL, even to this day. When I did finally get dropped the Thursday afternoon before Hell Week, along with 4 other dudes, I walked into the chiefs' board, I was asked a few questions, like why I failed drown-proofing, and that fool was off on the side giving these snarky ass reactions. He was expecting others to do the same but his only problem was all the other chiefs liked me. Before getting dropped tho, I'd heard all the stories about chipping paint and was trying to do anything I could to avoid going to the fleet. Tried going SWCC, EOD, and even cross rating to corpsman to go recon, lol. It actually almost worked, but not quite, lol. They also sent me to San Clemente for a month as well in X-Div, which I didn't mind. While the fleet wound up being a bit better than I thought it'd be, it still sucked, and I still chipped plenty paint. Swabbing decks, scrubbing heads and toilets, wiping down walls endlessly and other dumb shit took up the bulk of my time. I did mess crank too for 2 months but got out the last month of it for SAR school, lol, and soon went on multiple deployments. Shit sucked, especially seeing my buddy Lee get flown off to BUD/S while I was stuck floating around on that ship. FOMO and feeling in the dumps like a mofo, lol.

What was even worse was that I'd just missed the last batch of dudes to get sent out for overseas security billets. They were taking bunches of dudes at that time. Those were some sweet gigs, and dudes very often trained hard and got quickly back to BUD/S. We had a dude named Thomas in our boat crew quit the second week of phase, went security, and when I got back to BUD/S for 240, guess who was already coming back from San Clemente to graduate? Thomas. He looked hella happy and proud. Sadly, he popped positive for cocaine returning from his 30 days leave. Helluva way to go, right.

@@jakezweig The real-deal bonafide chip-painters from BUD/S are the undesignateds, many of whom happened to have the SEAL contract. I remember seeing dudes with the SEAL contact in bootcamp and it made me feel like an idiot. Like, why didnt me and Jonesey get them? Turned out they got guaranteed a shot at BUDS as long as everything else checked out, but the big caveat was that they had no rating. So if they didnt make it thru, they were getting shipped to the fleet as a deck seaman, which is the bottom of the bottom of the food chain. My first berthing was with the deck seamen and youre surrounded by dudes who barely had IQs high enough to even get into the Navy, and they literally chip paint for a living. And their hours are even worse than everybody elses. Not only do they wake up earlier, and end later, but underway they get called for flight quarters at all hours of the night. So theyre constantly getting woken up. SUCKS to be them. I know plenty old timer SEALs had to go that route and u could understand why they were so motivated getting back to BUD/S, lol.

@@jakezweig My personal deficit was the 500m swim in bootcamp... swam a 14:52 on my first swim. I showed up not even knowing what the sidestroke and breastroke were, all the while my freestyle sucked too. Im a chess player and that kinda thing is not my style. I saw a buds documentary on the discovery channel of november of 98 and got enthralled. A mutual friend told jonesey about it, and we became the best of friends. But jones had jjst graduated and was already set to go the next month. I told myself i needed a few years to train for it, but since jonesey was going almost immediately, i said fuck it and went too. Well Jones didnt know shit about swimming either, and ironically, i was the one who passed his last attempt of the test.. swam a 12:17, but jonesey never even passed and had to do 20 months in the fleet. So there i was at BUDS, and i at least improved my sidestroke a lot, but sucked at every other pool evolution they had, lol.

I actually had a lot of fun in the fleet. I was also on the Special Operations my last two years and can compare the two lives. I started out working the flight deck of a carrier - we never would’ve tolerated that in my berthing or any berthing I know of. We were squared away. Clean berthing, laundry, security, all that shit was police heavily. No one was allowed to stink, let alone assault anyone we would’ve dealt with that immediately

I shit pants walking home in the middle of winter once. I was probably 9. Cold , snowing and couldn't hold it II was on a road that was busy and the road split a park in two. Their was a giant fence along the sidewalk that I couldn't climb over so I shit my pants and walked the mile and a half left to get home. I got home and left my underwear under the front porch. My dad found them shitty drawers in spring ( for some reason he went under the porch ?). Anyway, the only person that knew that I shit my pants was me , until my dad found them thawed out undies. Hey Jake - unrelated question here, but nonetheless curious to ask if you or anyone else here has heard: does the military now have access to candidates' medical records who are applying for a secret or top secret clearance? I have a friend whose MOS was in HUMNIT but was recently separated from the Air Force because the they discovered he took prescription pills for ADHD as a kid. He claims that he never disclosed any personal medical history to his recruiters, at MEPS, or to anyone while he was at basic training before being booted out. I would think HIPAA protects any health records from being accessed without consent, so it nonetheless shocked me when he explained why he can no longer pursue HUMNIT. Also very possible he could be BS'ing, but I thought I would ask. Anyways, as always, thank you for consistently putting out original content, it's fire.

I was on the Eisenhower and my first day we went underway for 2 mo tha. Didn't have shower shoes plus my shower stall just barely any water would come out had soap in my eyes. I'd never seen the ocean till that day. The berthings man being on that bottom spot sucked ass man. Man boot camp was a breeze for me. I wrestled as well so I slept through bootcamp basically. I qualled for swimming and swam so good they asked me if I wanted to qual higher up. Said what is a SK gonna need another swim quall for. I guess the rates LS now. Anyway they more guns instead of the 9mm and 12 guage.

Damn when I served under Bush for a couple years muh fuckers were popping hot left and right for weed. 45/45 and back to the platoon. Knocked down to private and back to the fight. This is a good story, probably because it's not a success story; but some things are missing. Because if a Boat Crew is down a Man or two, wouldn't that make that boat slower, and heavier? Especially when carrying the logs; one person is allot of strength missing pending where they were on that log.

My perspective was in contrast to the innumerable number of buds vids showing prospects carrying the logs on their shoulders and overhead; given that they look about as smooth as telephone poles and wet, until now, that possibly was incomprehensible. the same with the boat, I seen videos where they were carrying the instructor in A RIB and not actually in the boat itself. These little details change the whole context of the dude's accounting of Buds. I'm not trying to discredit the narrator or belittle him, just scratching my beard over some details which thankfully, you promptly delivered. The World's a Different place on the other side of a Lense; and I appreciate you resharing that Side in detail: thank you.
