Jakob, your videos are remarkably well done, and your speaking os clear and concise. I've seldom seen an instructional video that organized all the information so well. I rather wish TE had put all this in the user guide, but hey, you've done it so well I'll turn to you. I own the PO 12, 20, 32 (and microtoniq) and finally the 33. I might as well mention here that I've discovered that I can use my metronome, a Korg MA-1, to provide a sync track, so I don't need to use a PO as a sync master at all. The Korg, which I bought for about $10, has headphone out, and several sounds you can select for your beat, and at least one of them will provide a sync beat to the POs. I've tried starting, stopping and changing the tempo with it also and it has worked. So try that sometime!

Is there an easy way to find the end of that recording? In Ableton, even on the highest input level, I only get a visible recording line in the first 15 seconds, then the line looks flat. Since it tool so long to count upwards I left the room and now have a recording that is too long, but I don't know how much too long? Is there a strategy that makes this work? Does the recording end with a small blip in the line shown in Ableton? Because after 140 bars at 120 bpm I have a small dot.

I purchased a PO-33 about 7 months ago. But a few days ago, for no apparent reason, it stopped turning on. I found him with a completely dead screen and couldn't resuscitate him. I did everything that is written on the manufacturer's website, but it did not give any results. I began to study this issue and it turned out that this is a common problem faced by po owners, it just stops turning on for no apparent reason. As far as I understand there is some error in the design or program. I wrote to the support service of teenage engineering, to which they replied to me that they could not replace my tool and could not repair it. They sent me a list of components so that I could order them and repair them myself. This is strange. Because absolutely nothing happened to PO, it just lay idle for a few days, and stopped working. If even the specialists of teenage engineering can't fix this flaw (judging by how often PO owners face this problem), why do they offer to fix it for me on their own? Then they stopped replying to my messages. I was very disappointed. I paid $ 90 for a piece that didn't even work for half a year. I was refused replacement, technical support, and no response at all. And the output sound of this thing is really shitty.

That's kind of what scares me about the more expensive pocket operators. Some of them (such as the PO-33) are approaching the price point of more expensive, more durable gear. I got one (the 20 Arcade) used that had 2 columns of defective LEDs, and that makes the sequencer nearly useless, since you need those to see which chords you have enabled/patterns are selected. Having exposed contacts like that really just sketches me out, and by the time you buy one of the cases, you might as well have just saved up a little more for a second hand Model:Samples. I love the idea of the Pocket Operators, but for any of them but the cheapest, I feel like the build quality doesn't justify the cost.

With the last "sync session - extended play" at 27:00 it looks like you have both individual audio out and sync out leads from the PO-32 tonic and the PO-32 K.O. Are there 2 output sockets on the released versions, was this just on a development version you were using, OR am I just seeing things???
@JakobHaq4 жыл бұрын
The PO’s only have one input and one output and that has never changed. The reason why it looks like it does at 27:00 is because of me having to place PO’s over cables due to lack of space on the desk. I’m using various different cables also, so the pos have their individual outputs routed to an audio mixer and the sync is coming from the far left PO running through a signal splitter box.

I'm really having a hard time with the data dump. Backing up sounds and patterns through the line out into an audio interface using Ableton. I get an audio track that sounds like some crazy white noise. When I try to then restore that audio through the input on the PO33 its not working. I tried both using write+sound+play, and write+sound+record. I have been looking for a video that can demonstrate uploading and backing up patterns and sounds, and also re uploading that info to the PO33. Any reply would be greatly appreciated! Great stuff by the way.

I had a tough time with the backup and restore feature, I first tried using Audacity and failed before contacting Teenage Engineering to ask about other programs that might work. Teenage Engineering recommend Microtonic for backup, they suggested others had used iPhone voice memo as well. I did not have a smartphone to try this, so I tried Garageband instead being that it was an apple app. After some experimentation I managed to get full backup and restore. I went back to Audacity with what I learned and managed to get it to work there also. Recording Backup 1. It does not matter what audio software you use to record your backup. Make sure no plugins or effects are active 2. It helps when recording backup to have the PO-33 at maximum volume 3. It also helps if the audio software input volume is set to record at around 60% (I tried recording at about 50% to avoid clipping and this only resulted at around 70-75% of data restored before error). 4. Record in 2 channel stereo at 16 bit 44,100, save without compression to either .wav or .aiff Restoring Backup 1. It does not matter what audio software/hardware you use to restore your backup 2. The volume should be set at around 50% on the playback software/hardware. Set the PO-33 to about 6 (don’t know if this matters but the volume defaults to that anyway) 3. If you have a high cpu load (or your pc is acting up) this creates issues with the transfer of the playback, there is no buffer under run protection on the PO-33. If your cpu stalls AT ALL transfer will fail. 4. If your backups are not playing back smoothly try another device. I saved the .wav files to a flash drive and played them back from my blu-ray player with a line out from the headphone jack in my stereo amplifier to the PO-33. No stalling, No issues. (Transfer rate 1.4Mbps) These are just my experiences with backup and restore on the PO-33. I am not suggesting that this is the only way, this is just what worked for me. The key is do not get discouraged, there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks for the in-depth guide. I have ordered one. Should I watch the video about the PO-35, too? Or is the functionality different so that it would confuse me too much in the beginning?
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
Um..well if you're new to Pocket Operators then it can be confusion for you to watch the one about PO35. Let's me clarify. . The PO-35 and PO-33 are very different in what hey do and what they sound like. When I say that they "operate in the same way", I'm referring to the fact that they're Pocket operators and so the basic operation is the same. . For instance many functions requires holding down one button and pressing another or tweaking a knob to perform certain functions like changing volume etc. . Also Inserting notes, changing volume, operating effects basically work the same way on all Pocket operators. However the latest metal series PO's include new functionality that can't be found on the earlier models. And many of these function completely differ between the metal series Pocket operators (PO32, PO33, PO35). . So even if you might find the PO35 video interesting and informative, it could be confusing seeing how PO35 has the most functionality and features out of all Pocket operators. And so many of the features found in that unit is not available in PO33. Like scale and key switching, muting and more.
@y.51076 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks for the reply. I just got the OP-33 in my hands today. Your video helped me a lot. I think I understand the basic concept now. The only thing I find quite hard is to make a bit more complex songs. I guess looping patterns is the way to go here. Unfortunately, the button No. 13 doesn't always have contact and I need to press it a bit stronger than the others.

I strongly recommend that you watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5OxaWiobrCCadk . I was wondering if you can help me... I'd like to record my PO 33 patterns into Logic Pro. I have a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 audio interface. I tried every which way last night and could not get anything to work. It was as if the audio interface did not recognize the PO 33-- no sound, Logic wasn't picking up anything. The audio interface itself is fine, I can easily record my synths to Logic Pro. So, what am I doing wrong? What cables do I need? I was using a single 1/8" from the audio out on the PO33 to 1/4" cable going into the Focusrite.
@JakobHaq5 жыл бұрын
That’s the right cable. Hmm, If everything was connected properly then you shouldn’t have had any issues so make. However, the pocket operators will reset/lower the volume output when connecting and disconnecting cables and headphones to the output port. When you’ve connected a cable to the output, make sure you then increase the volume output by pressing and holding [BPM] and one of the buttons from [13]-[15]. Also make sure you don’t have any sync modes engaged.

You can work around it to a point, ex. some drum samples combine a kick and a cymbal, or you can sample a complete drum track from a melody, but you will have more freedom with two units. I bought PO-32 Tonic when it came out and use it with PO-33.

Right now I´m deciding if I would like to buy the KO or the Arcade unit. I get that these are totally opposite operators. I have no questions with ARCADE. It´s a really crazy device. But I have some doubts KO. I love samplers, so KO seems to be a great option, but the thing is... Can this device offer a better experience than Koala sampler (for example)?
@JakobHaq4 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting question and even though I don’t feel like it’s a fair comparison, I’ll try to say my piece. . Their user interfaces makes them very different from one another, in terms of workflow and interaction. Koala is a touch app and offer no other tactile experience other than a flat surface. PO33 on the other hand is a hardware unit and after working with it for a few weeks, one adapts muscle memory and could practically operate it with closed eyes. I don’t get that with Koala. . When it comes to performing Live and working the FX section, both offer different experiences to. In Koala one switches over to an FX page and so one loses control over everything else. If one wants to record notes or do any changes to a pattern one have to leave the fx page basically. . PO33 has every control available on its surface. After learning how to operate the various “key-commands” (1, 2 and 3 button presses) one can easily switch between workflows, essentially going from recording a pattern and then directly to live performance without switching any “pages”. It’s all about key-commands. . Now, sample memory and storage, well that’s very different between them. With Koala you have as much storage as your iDevice can handle and that is always a very good thing. One can import samples from various sources and one can also record samples internally from other apps. Oh koala has the ability to sample from itself with (with the option of using input fx). . PO33 on the other hand has a very limited sample memory and does not even come close to Koala in any way shape or form. 42 seconds, make the most of it. Also when sampling with PO33 you’ll have to make sure you got a variety of cables for your external gear that you want to sample. The upside with the short sample memory is that I always find myself coming up with new clever creative ways of making the most out of my sampling sessions, simply because I’m forced to solve that memory problem. This is good for creativity. . There are loads of stuff to compare but I’ll just say this. When I’m already working with an app-based session and need a performance sampler, I’ll go for Koala. However, when working with hardware devices ... I go for PO33. . Other times I just feel like working with hardware over software and in those cases I’ll grab the 33. And other times it’s the opposite and I’ll grab my iPhone and start up Koala. . I love em both and I have use for both in different scenarios. In the end, only you can know what works best for you though.

Thank you for all your advice. I'm going to watch the video to see if it's in there but maybe you can help, how do I load individual samples or copy individual samples into separate buttons rather than have them spread through the whole interface. I know this is possible as I've seen plenty of people do it I just don't know how to do it myself. Any help or advice would be thoroughly appreciated. Thanks again for teaching me. Sorry if the answers in this video and I haven't seen it yet. This is something I really want to do and will make so much better it's already awesome of course and can't believe I'm holding something that you helped create that's a real buzz.

I suggest you watch the video. My videos are well structured and contains highly condensed information. If you skip stuff, you’ll miss out on info. This one even has a menu that shows up at every section. Everything you need to know about how the PO33 works is in this video. It’s the most thorough video on KZbin.

Very cool review/tutorial! But why do you show exactly 13 of the 16 drum sounds in every drum slot? Why not all of them?
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 👊🏼 To answer your question...it was kind of a brain fart on my end. Even though I worked in that video for a month I didn't notice that thing with the drum playback until the video had been up for a week... 😅😂

Hey Jakob great tute on the PO -33 are you able to provide a recording for the factory default for the PO-33? a friend of mine just got one but accidentally wiped the sounds and is still getting to know the machine.. that would be great thanks!
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
If your friend want to do a pure factory reset then all he/she just need to perform the factory reset combo. First unplugg batteries, then holding down the pattern + write buttons while inserting batteries to restore the unit to factory default. NOTE! This will set the unit to a factory state meaning anything that’s been done with the machine up to that point will be erased and replaced with factory sounds and patterns.

Why not sync them
@theTerribleFamiliar5 жыл бұрын
@@AJC19811 Certainly possible. And there are a few more editing features in the Volca, but getting samples onto it is such a pain. The app that made it somewhat simpler is no longer supported on iOS and is unusable after OS 12. Bummer.

I am intereset in buying a case for my PO-32 and the PO-33, there are those new CA-X cases but can I also use the ones which were created for the older Pocker Operators ? (I don't use the microphone anyways) Thanks for helping me out :)
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
All 9 Pocket operators have the same dimensions and interface layouts. 👍🏼
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
However, the Metal series have a built in microphone. The old original cases does not have a cut-out for fitting those.

Hi Jackob. Love your work. So i can individually oitch every slice of a drum kit? And even automate that? Can i have some note over there and pitch it?
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
K.O doesn’t have a different scale modes like speak, but yes you can pitch each drum-slice and even automate it.
