Korg really needs to go back and make a modern version of the iKaossilator app. It would have so much potential now if it integrated with other apps or let you use your own sounds... heck let us use the instruments from their other products similar to Gadget (which also could use a refresh).

Same. I Also wish Yamaha would update/retrofit AUv3 support TNR-i (Tenori-On) for the current iOS. It would also be wonderful if Arturia hadn’t given up on Spark, because that app is, like DM2, drum synthesis as well as a live performance percussion app. I love my Spark (v1) hardware. *Side note: I would love to see some forward-thinking developer come out with a sequencer hack for the Spark hardware like we’ve seen done with Zequencer for the Behringer BCR2000 hardware mixer.

I didn't get into iOS music making until a few years ago, but one iOS/Android app that I absolutely loved was Caustic 3. It was first released back in 2011 and had tons of features for creating music. The developer was fairly active with the community and continuously added new synths and features until 2017. Sadly, it no longer receives support is a bit buggy with current operating systems. Google now says it isn't even compatible with my devices (even though it is installed and still works on them)

You are a great historian on the world of iOS music apps and I love every time you show us that history. Because of Apple policies on how apps disappear from the app store, if people don't do stories on this history, we will never know what used to be. I have an original gen iPad, too old for most things, but every time I buy an older music app, I check to see if I can load it on my old iPad. A couple of them like the Korg MS-20 are a little glitchy if I push the limits, but most of them work quite well. Mostly it is a repository of history for as long as that iPad keeps working. Sadly, I entered into the iOS music world too late to grab most of the older historic apps.

Figure kicks a**! The Reason peeps where so much ahead on ios. Thor synth was mindblowingly good when it was launched too - and still is. I've downloaded lots of music apps since the start of the AppStore. The biggest single release for me in the early days was the original NanoStudio, by Blip Interactive. I was actually working in a music store at the time and it blew us all away. NanoStudio 2 is on the store but the original is 32bit and needs iOS 10 or earlier. I highly reccomend anyone wanting to see how ground breaking this was to find the youtube channel Blip Interactive, he's only ever uploaded 3 videos, and play the earliest video, from June 2010. In that 4 minute video he builds a full track with NanoStudio 1. NanoStudio had a 16 pad sampler, 4 instances of a great va/wavetable synth with lfo's and modulation, 6 midi track sequencer and automation, effects... it was just amazing, on an iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 at the time. Anyway I have fond memories of those early iOS music days, was pretty cool. I bought NanoStudio 2 and it's great but I've used it very little, sadly. So many things to play with now.

I love these retrospective videos. I made so many songs in Rhythm Studio, and later made a bunch of songs by using Audio Copy to transfer Figure stems into Hook, a Retronyms app. I always struggled with Audiobus. I tried using third-party solutions to restore Alchemy, but couldn’t do it. In my opinion, the GarageBand version is a poor substitute, mainly due to limited control, and the inability to run it as an AUv3. It never made sense to me that Apple pulled it off of iOS. That was by far the most painful loss I’ve ever suffered, since I was one of those suckers who paid for the IAPs. At least I was able to back up the Windows version.

yeah, thumbjam is a good one. though it has a kind of retro feel to it, but it’s quite a capable piece of software - as a synth and MIDI tool for virtual routing as well. it also is appealing to just mess around in jams with it. had finished several productions with it in the mix within AUM, these two work with each other seamlessly, relatively reliable to use TJ that way, had very few issues with it over the years. not the case with every IAP-based app for sure.

funny, actually i thought i was just getting into music making on ios just now, but watching this video, i realized, that i have creating on ios for a bit more than 10 years now. only not very seriously. i had the original version of loopy, but never really used it much and still don't. i got me a version of "music studio" in 2011, now published by steinberg, but originaly released under a different name. to my knowledge, this was the first complete daw in ios. i mostly used it on my iPad 1 while travelling, and it still works. if i seriously want to produce something, i still prefer a computer with a big screen and some dedicated hardware connected to it, but when travelling or also playing around while relaxing on the sofa, mobile devices are really impressive nowadays. making music with them might also be one of the only uses for old devices, that are technically still like new , but in terms of software as dead as the dinos. in the meanwhile i have an ipad 1&3 lying around and just recently replaced my ipad mini 2 with an ipad 10. so i have 3 outdated devices that are actually still running great, only that there is no real use for them anymore, which is a shame! so i certainly am interested in some information about apps, that still might run on them.

There are a few synths that are just as powerful, but all one would basically need is take something like SynthMaster 2 and give it a UI page that works like the Alchemy one. My First music app was BeatMaker and I downloaded it in Dec 2010. It is no longer in the app store because it has been replaced with Beatmaker 3. The next one I downloaded was Figure in April 2012. I really really liked this app. It is still in the app store, but it's broken! It's been broken for months, maybe years. You need to log in to use it and even if you successfully log in you get a blank screen. I don't know how you are able to still use it; lucky I guess. I feel like Ampify's Groovebox has a similar vibe, but with more options. I got DM1 in July 2013 and I still use it to this date :-).

No doubt people have said this already, but in iKaossillator you need to perform the drums (and everything else), otherwise you get the loops the app provides. You certainly can make your own drum track, though you build them from canned sounds (which is what any sample-based app offers, whatever type sequencing or looping it does). Maybe you're misremembering? Check it again - you can play the screen, recording the playing. It can give very good results, and its limitations can be refreshing now and then. Anyway, thanks for the review. It is interesting to see how we did and did not overlap in our choices and usage patterns. I agree about the inadequacy of the current system regarding updates breaking software. But Apple cares about Apple. They have not fixed major issues with the dock and on-screen keyboards (for text and music) for years, with the crappy backup system, with the pretend access to the file system, and so on, despite knowing many customers have problems with these issues. They just want to sell things.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 2 жыл бұрын
The loops stay in the same Rhythm and build-up no matter how you play them. They’re kinda locked into some sort of sequence. However, you are not entirely wrong because there are two drum banks that allow you to record your own rhythms. But I find that preset clunky. It’s too easy to hit notes you don’t want to, ending up triggering sounds that you didn’t want to use. The drum sound selection It’s very limiting and yeah limitations can be good. But personally I do not find this limitation fun at all. Plus there’s no shuffle/swing control and I need that stuff. So I end up using Figure. It has shuffle/swing, wider drum sound/kit selection and a different more intuitive workflow.
@bitegoatie
@bitegoatie 2 жыл бұрын
@@JakobHaq I guess I'm saying there is no need to choose between Kaossillator and Figure or any other thing. When the mood strikes, I use an old app, a new app, whatever app. Figure and the KO are just different instruments. I still use both of these apps, though much less than I once did. In each case, that's because development of the app stopped - improvement stopped. I've been as big a fan as you of Figure, maybe even for a few weeks longer. Everything you say about it is true. At the same time, (i)Kaossillator is more flexible than you're now allowing. When I use it, I am not thinking I should have used something else. I can see not using it, with, what, hundreds of apps on our pads, but it's not the case that it's so hard to find notes or that you can't bend it to your will.

A good practice when browsing the AppStore is to see when they were lastly released. Either that or use an app-tracking site like synthfrog. Not all apps get listed though and by experience the best way of actually checking is asking others online if an app still works etc. The iPad musician group on Facebook is a good place. There are quite a few iOS music groups over there with dedicated members. Theb you’ve got Audiobus forum too.

I saw your notification on Twitter but your video didn’t come up in my KZbin notifications, even though I’m subscribed to your channel. I wonder whether the KZbin gremlins have escaped again?

Have you activated the bell too? KZbin changed that a few years ago. In the past one just needed to sub and it was good. Now they want people to click the bell too. But sometimes that fails too. I usually just check in on my subscribed tab and all the latest videos from people I subscribe to always pop up there. So far I haven’t missed any videos … I think 😅😅😅

@@JakobHaq I’ve definitely clicked the bell but KZbin is sometimes a bit like an elderly relative who forgets things. I’ve noticed that they don’t always notify me when other people I follow have uploaded something, so I know that they probably don’t have it in for you. Keep on making great videos and I’ll keep looking out for them.

Open the “settings app”. Tap on your account, then tap on “purchases” and then “show account”. Log in when prompted with login page. After login scroll down to “purchase history”. In there you’ll find all purchases. You can even setup time periods and what types of purchases you’re looking for.

I’m running a channel heavily focused on iOS mobile music and I don’t do videos featuring GarageBand. Im very niche. 😅

@@JakobHaq GarageBand is... almost great? Like the Mac version is suffers a lot from no midi output, which on the Mac can be explained by it being a 'lite' version of Logic... which has The Environment full of crazy midi manipulation stuff. I wish Apple would make iPad GarageBand more 'Pro' if they aren't going to bring Logic over, but then they're leaving a lot of space for other developers by not doing this, so it's all good I suppose.
