Jakub Józef Orliński’s debut album ANIMA SACRA is released on 26 October 2018. wnrcl.me/animasacra
Among the world premiere recordings on the Polish-born countertenor’s programme is this aria by the Neapolitan composer Nicola Fago, ‘Alla gente a Dio diletta’.
Sung by Aaron, brother of Moses, it comes from the oratorio ‘Il Faraone sommerso’ (The drowned pharaoh), which tells the dramatic biblical story of the Exodus from Egypt. The flowing serenity of the aria is reflected in the dream-like atmosphere of this video, directed by James Darrah.

I attended recently in Wigmore Hall his concert with Il Pomo d'oro (fantastic ensemble). He has not only a great voice, but also incredible interpretative capabilities. He sang most of the tracks of the latest CD Facce d'Amore. I was impressed by the 'modernity' of his interpretations. Italian opera arias written in 16-17th century by composers virtually unknown to the average person looked so fresh, genuine, and actual, almost timeless. He's also a very witty and nice person; you have the feeling that he's there not only as musician, but also to convey a message to the listeners, as to inspire them . At the end, standing ovation from the public and 4 encores (with 'Vedro' con mio diletto', requested aloud by the audience).

He incorporates his body naturally to enhance singing/his production of sound, freeing the voice through working in conjunction with the body, as one, in flow with his movement (can be seen in other work not in this video because so stylised) and the way in which he has turned his back bravely from the physical rigidity of traditional classical singers. Also the expression in the eyes and facial expression is engaging, other countertenors of today just don't really portray an aria as he does and this gives him the edge over any other so called technically better countertenor or in my mind, boring performer. Lovely, beautiful work Josef. Bravo for being a sovereign individual and not letting the status quo bully you into giving up dancing.
