この会話を記録した別の動画(Japan Airlines Boeing 787 Fuel Leak Incident (ATC))へのNative English speakerと思われる人たちのコメントを見ると、JALの機長さんの英語は全然問題ないっていう意見が多いですね。All setなんていう口語表現もこういう事態ではやめるべきだって。"are they all set."の意味は"do any passengers require assistance."だそうです。しかし、この機長さん、わからない英語を曖昧にしないで、相手に意味をちゃんと確認しているのは立派だと思います。
よくある航空英語を使えない米国人との会話例。all set は北米口語で、このような緊急事態で「乗客乗員は安全か?救急搬送の必要な乗客乗員はいないか?」の意味で、緊急車両隊の指揮官が使うべきでないのは明白。「どう乗客をsetするのか?」と確認すると、まるで相手の上げ足を取ってるかのようにネイティブには感じられるだろうが、航空英語と米国口語は全く別物。 特に5881便Pilot「fuel or some spilled out(燃料かなにかがたれて落ちてる)」 tower「fuel that appears be coming from your left wing(左の翼からの燃料が認められてる)」などと当初口語で言っているが、これも明快に「fuel leak(燃料漏れ)」を使うことが決まっている。JAL機Pが何度も確認しているのも、fuel leakという熟語が相手から出てこなかったから。
Taku O 外人コメでも英語力批判はあるよ。日本人パイロットとは関係ない別の動画でも英語下手なパイロットを危険視するコメントもたくさんある。Taku O さんみたいなコメントは愛国心こじらせて同じ日本人をかばってるだけにしか見えない。会話を簡潔化するために定型文が用意されてるけどその定型文でしかやり取りできないのは危険でしかないよ。あくまで”素早く”会話できるように定型文があるのであって英語を勉強したくない人のためにあるのではないよ。
