Jalen maturity on that 22yd pass to Devonta on last drive was great to see. He would've bailed pocket earlier this year. He trusted pocket and subtly manipulated it to buy time for Smith to get open. Outstanding and shows true growth.

Some things on the first two plays: 1. I don't think Hurts is truly reading Devonta on his left, then moving to the stick nod on his right. The eagles are in empty and know the steelers are playing zone with a single high safety. I think he looks to Smith to keep the safety away from the stick nod that leaves a backer isolated. That route was his first progression, which is why Hurts takes his eyes off Smith "early" (credit: Fran Duffy) 2. The second play, it's 3rd down and steelers have 10 men. Preston Smith comes off the field late, and neither Higgsmith nor Herbig make it onto the field before the snap so steelers drop 7, not 8, and only have 3 rushing. And it still resulted in a turnover

The Eagles' offensive braintrust seems to have been putting a high emphasis on ball security recently. After the TB game in week 4 Hurts had turned the ball over 27 times in his last 21 games. Since then he's turned it over 3 times. The Eagles' passing game was very good on Sunday, and the way it functioned speaks to the overall identity of the offense: the offense wants to make high-percentage plays that chew the clock (2 (!!) Pittsburgh possessions in the second half). If I were a betting man I would say Moore, Stout & co. would rather run the football more often than they did vs. Pittsburgh. Either way, the desire to chew clock probably makes the shallow cross a more appealing option (even if there are better ones out there). For me, Sunday's game was a moment in which the Eagles deviated from their previous preference for the run because Saquon didn't look right and Pittsburgh was ready for it. I am also growing concerned about Philly's ability to adapt to new coverages but for now the offense passed an important test with flying colors.

I need hurts to play like this every time he throws. My problem is. Ok we run the ball more then we pass. I get that we got saquon, but when we do pass this should be the standard everytime. This should be the level he plays at every time. Like if you agree.

Great point on Smith not settling. He settles. Then even if he doesn't get the 1st down, they would likely be close to tush push call.

On the second play I agree that in general a QB should go through the reads here. But Jalen is just at his absolute best when he is being decisive above all else. When he is sitting back there in the pocket and taking his time he loses that instinctual skill that turns him from average to elite.

@dionmccall658112 күн бұрын
When you run the rpo its like play action, you have to go through the motion to achieve its goal. Goal was to make this look like a read option to the left, which means to make it look real the QB needs to make it seem he is reading a player on the left. This action also help create the window needed to get that ball to AJ
@ghos7kam77912 күн бұрын
What are you confused about? That play Barkley and Hurts both sold the run. They experienced the Saquon effect. Lol. MattyDubs channel explain that play. There was no read confusion.
@mattheifner146510 күн бұрын
First play of the game is a weird horizontal stretch they had to see on film, single high safety was frozen by hurts enough to let the stick nod come open, which is nice if it works. I agree the mid level pass game is iffy if you want to be playing in the post season, wouldn’t be surprised to see some drive concepts with a mills concept attached to it if they’re putting stress on LB play. It’d probably be nice to stand in and get to #3 on the dagger concept, but happy feet + good athlete + color in your face is a bad equation sometimes when pushing the ball down the field (IMO). I felt like the shallow cross where smith should’ve shut it down could’ve been a delayed WR with a built in screen with the TE late in the concept. Could be a bit of reach, but possible

@alanf561512 күн бұрын
you analysis of the 3rd down pass to devontae smith is just off. hes the crosser and the tight end is the sitter. additionally the eagles are a team that goes for it often and in this part of the field they are definitly ok with throwing in front of the marker to a pretty good yac guy and setting themselves up for a manageable 4th down. i dont see how your not ok with this pass by hurts given the way his teams operate and where they were on the field.
@dionmccall658112 күн бұрын
His analysis is correct, as a receiver you dont run yourself into being covered if theres an open zone thats were you sit. It would be very abnormal to have the TE sit in that region against cover 2, and it was only open because smith over ran his route so much he was picked up by the flat defender
@alanf561511 күн бұрын
@dionmccall6581 the idea is that the tight end distracts the linebacker or that a linebacker overcompensate for the crosser. The 2 routes work in tandom to stress the defense. multiple curl routes would be way easier to defend. Additionally getting the ball to devante smith on the move is usually a good idea. When you have a team that goes for it on 4th down it materially changes your strategy in different parts of the field. Throwing it in front of the sticks becomes a solid strategy and I think actually is very healthy for an offense bec it promotes yac and reduces the stress on the qb
@Itsxmusic11 күн бұрын
I liked the back shoulder fade but I’d prefer he hit the crosser. I need Jalen to get used to taking the easy completions. Too often he misses wide open crossers on 3rd and 6+ only to take an unnecessary down field shot or a sack.

Steelers fan here to see how we let Hurts shred us😂. Honestly some good and bad from the defense. Hurts played well, and Brown/Smith were causing problems. There were plays that we actually covered well but their oline allowed hurts time to make plays. Our D being on he filed that much made our pass rushers tired and then our whole defense was vulnerable.
@danielvalentino367512 күн бұрын
That 3rd Q shallow cross to DeVonte on 3rd. You were wondering what happened. Could Jalen have thrown to the wrong person. Looked like Smitty pulled the CB off the TE that was open. I think Jalen misread this
@dionmccall658112 күн бұрын
No, he called it correctly, and this is a problem smitty has, he frequently runs himself into being covered instead of sitting in the zone,
@ghos7kam77912 күн бұрын
Man you just confused about everything. There's no wrong read if both routes are open. Smitty has to get in between the zone defender and sit there. Or it's the route design that should have options vs man or zone to sit or keep running on shallow crossers.

Could his line of sight get blocked? Possible. Also many linemen swat passes, but not just from shorter qbs. That could effect the trust factor, but I'm just guessing here. Hurts is still a decent enough height, so his line of sight is only an inch lower than Mahomes, Rodgers, and Jackson. Brock, Baker, Minshew, Tua, and Caleb are all the same height and throw well inside and outside the numbers including Hurts. The shortest QBs with the likes of Bryce, Kyler, and Russ would have the most visual over the middle struggles if anything. Notice how Russ throw outside the numbers a lot. On minimal occasions Bryce had to jump shot passes at times cus he and Kyler are 5'10 and Russ 5'11 so at least Hurts is a 6 footer.
