I love how Captain Nemo is so calm and nonchalant, seeming quite to handle the gravity of the situation without panicking, while Ned and Conseil are so hysterical. It's like he was expecting Ned to attempt an escape only to be chased back to the Nautilus by cannibals.

That was actually not planned. Before shooting that scene, the boat originally had ballast that made the boat lower but it was removed. Beforehand, Kirk Douglas was expecting the boat to be lower, so when he tried to row the boat his oars didn't catch enough water, he put too much torque on them and fell over backwards.

@@MafiaKingfishNOLA Right. We must understand their behavior from THEIR perspective; after all, the oblivious, arrogant westerners are invading THEIR territory. The natives' reactions are totally justified, their culture & habits as valid as the Caucasians, if not more so. While this may be true as viewed in today's pc-light, it has nothing to do with the story as originally written by Verne. The film simply is presenting Verne's plot, turning it into a visual adventure in spectacular fashion.

This movie is groundbreaking for film and impressive for sure. This scene, like many in films at the time and in other Walt Disney films (Peter Pan, for example) makes it clear how little Disney and the entire movie crew knew about or understood the world they were filming. Real cannibals are not dark-skinned islanders intent on killing and eating anyone new, white, or otherwise different any time they see them. Cannibalism has been a feature of many cultures across the globe, cultures not including "cults" or individuals like Hannibal Lector (or the real-life counterparts: psychopaths and sociopaths). I mean people that have existed in groups much older in their region than, say, Americans in the USA. These people live in tribes or similar group structures with rules, religions, ideas, and family structures as complex and important as any other culture in the world. Cannibalism itself is not very exciting or complex; some cultures have spiritual or legal beliefs that place importance on the physical material of a human body, and together with other variable factors they find it necessary to eat parts of the human body after death in order to do a number of practical and spiritual things ritualistically, such as sending a loved one into a death state or afterlife, or gaining strength from them in a social sense. People that have cultural cannibalistic practice do not want to eat anybody and everybody; they eat food and drink like anybody because they are people in need of sustenance they could not get from a human body. Additionally, killing is not always, and not often, the preparation necessary for cannibalistic ritual; this is a ritual that often takes place after someone dies of some other cause than murder. Also, in times when people do kill others it is not for fun, out of anger, or generally aggressive; it is a repulsive event to kill someone to most peoples and, for example, there is a large tribe in Papua New Guinea (the location featured in this scene) that may still practice cannibalism today. They believe that sometimes a demon-like evil spirit (spirits being part of their religion) will enter a loved one or relative and they bring harm to their people. In order to stop this from happening, they kill the person (who they believe is now only evil) and eat parts of them to get rid of the evil spirit and save their tribe. My point is that real cannibalism is a far cry from the cannibalism featured in this scene. The only reason films exist including cannibalism is because someone in 1940 made a movie featuring "cannibals" for the first time and it was taken up by the movie creators who did a lot of copying at the time. This coincided well with the Jules Verne novel which features the cannibals shown in the film in a similar way, also a demonstration of the racism and ignorance that was normal at the time. I must add, the movie does not actually employ any Papua New Guinean people and therefore has given no contribution to them in any way while gaining from their use as characters, making them a cultural slave to the movie company. This happened and still happens often in media across the globe, especially coming from the USA.

The natives are like the storm troopers from Star Wars. In reality, they would have shot them full of arrows or quickly overrun the metal rowboat with the outriggers.

despite his classic cut-glass english accent, presumably the director made james mason say "pry-vacy" rather than "priv-acy" for the sake of an american audience?

Ranko Orović I think this was because the Caribbean islands were used as a stopping post during the slave trade (as several islands were European territory). Several modern Caribbeaners have descended from former slaves, like how a lot of Black/African Americans descended from former slaves.

If you had a scene like that in a movie today some SJW would call it racism.

It would be portrayed slightly different. But in the sublimely simplistic parlance of our times, Nemo is being quite "woke" here. He rebukes Ned for so casually entering their territory, and in the scene after this, he further lambasts the brash white man for his assumed privilege.

It is not the tribal state (many tribes around the world welcome peaceful contact), it is rather the isolation, being stuck on that island since the dawn of humanity. The Sentinelese might not be cannibals, but they behave just like in that video with anyone who lands on their island. They even shoot arrows at helicopters.

I don't think it's being bloodthirsty as much as it is fear of anything unknown. About how I'd treat a grey alien plundering my bedroom. Id run or beat it down 😁

If im not mistaken, they were off the coast of New Guinea and for centuries, most of the Polynesian, Melanesian, & Micronesian cultures were considered cannibalistic. Yet its been debatable over the years.
