I went to a friend's church some years ago. They passed the offering basket and counted the money right upfront and told the congregation it wasn't enough and they were going to pass it again. I didn't put the first time and I surely wasn't putting the 2nd time! I never visited again. And I told myself that I would never attend a church that has you come upfront to put your offering in the basket. That is not anyone's business and I don't need anyone to try and gaslight me to believe my blessings ONLY come from giving of money.

This kind of preaching can make you depressed. When I was young I expected Jesus to do all of this stuff with taking any personal responsibility for my finances. You learn to envy what others have and you feel sad because God hasn’t miraculously paid off the debt that YOU created. I remember a Preacher saying I walked on the car lot and said “I anit got no money and good credit” but wanted a car and they said they drove off the lot. but what they didn’t tell the congregation is that they probably had an interest rate of 29 percent on a luxury used car .
