Hey Jarrod. I've got an interesting perspective for you: take Anderson since summer 2014 - when it appears he finally overcame the slightly hushed-up ankle injury/niggle he had: 255 wickets @ 20.8 in all tests of which: 103 wickets @ 24.4 away from home. Firstly: 250ish wickets is as many wickets as constitute entire careers of some of the greats (Joel Garner, Michael Holding and some others). So this is no piffling little window of data. Secondly: what? 24.4 average away? But we all know JIMMY IS NO GOOD EXCEPT IN ENGLISH CONDITIONS/DUKE BALL! Hmmm - clearly we were a bit wrong. Let's compare that with Steyn's last 250ish wickets from 2010: 254 wickets @ 22.4 in all tests of which: 96 wickets @ 26.8 away from home. What? Dale is worse than Jimmy when you look at their last 250ish wickets - both all matches and away - by around 2 runs per wicket. How is this so? We all know that Dale is 'clearly' the better bowler and what's more he can do it away when Jimmy can't. Hmmm - maybe we need to rethink this. OK - looks like Jimmy had 2 careers: early and late. Early was ok. Late was magnificent especially given what load was placed on him. And Dale's figures slightly slipped - not much, just a bit, from his early unstoppableness to the end of his career. Injuries? I don't know much about him and that may well be the case. I think the overall numbers are clear: Dale was a better bowler over their careers. But Jimmy has just got better and better, learned to bowl away, learned to work the batsmen out and that post-2014 phase ranks with the greatest bowlers of all time. And he needs credit - a bit like Federer - for working very hard to keep fit and stave off injury to allow that to happen. This is a slightly artificial view - based mainly on the 3rd hand 'inside knowledge' of an acquaintance of mine who is a Lancashire CCC member (just rumour or is there truth in it? What do I know....) (PS I'm both Jimmy and Dale fan-boy. How can you not love these guys?)

dale's number were indeed affected by injuries. he was suffering breakdowns in middle of games, his pace started to reduce and ultimately he retired. steyn had a blockbuster start to his career but a painful ending whereas jimmy probably had a painful start of career but is gonna end it as blockbuster.

A great and balanced analysis. However, a couple of years on, the average is now below 26 and the economy rate below 2.8. I'd say an important point with this analysis is "watch this space" as it is still a work in progress. Who knows, Anderson could conceivably still be lowering those stats for another three or four years, by which time his "post getting great" career in itself would be one of the biggest in test cricket. The final analysis can only be made at that point imo.

I came here to make a similar point. 2022 and start of 2023 are shaping up to be amongst the best years of his career. To be bowling with that pace (he's now comfortably quicker than Broad, who I think may retire first), accuracy and skill at 40 years old and closing in on 700 wickets is unbelievable.

Steyn better young, Anderson far far far better old. Anderson’s peak is post 34, Steyn was done at that. This says nothing about Steyn though, his career had a normal trajectory. Anderson is a true freak. Perhaps the only great player who is significantly better at 38 than he was at 28.

Steyns struggles against left handers were difficult to explain. I actually watched his first test live and nobody would have guessed he’d go on to become a modern great after seeing Trescothic smash him around with disdain. As soon as the right handers came in it was a different story. The swing, the seam, the pace was amazing. He was bowling 80mph at the left handers and 90mph at the right handers. It looked like when he was bowling at the left handers his whole action and run up were wrong. he did well to somewhat even it out by the end of his career. But I will say this: Steyn was a great bowler...at right handers. In an era with so many left handed openers this is a relevant point.
@JarrodKimberYT
@JarrodKimberYT 3 жыл бұрын
They are both natural outswing bowlers, it makes sense that they would both struggle more than others. That they both worked that out and went on to be elite says a lot for both of them. But obviously Boult or McGrath with a natural ball that leaves the left handers would have a superior record.
@HkFinn83
@HkFinn83 3 жыл бұрын
@@JarrodKimberYT oh Jimmy’s amazing at left handers. Loads of outswingers are good at them. Steyn just struggled in general at them. It’s like his whole action was for a right hander then at the last minute he’d push the ball over with his wrist, as though he was bowling down the leg side to a right hander. Imagine if he’s played in the old days with fewer lefties...average 18😂

Also, what effect did the application of this liquid manure have on the pitches? Did it create uneven bounce, or just made the area stink and thus unattractive for batters? Or did it do something else? Just my curiosity I guess :)

Good vid but you failed to mention two huge aspects of this debate which is really disappointing: 1) Anderson was robbed of his PRIME years as an athlete and bowler by a poor selection strategy by the England selectors and injuries (2003-2010) 2) Steyn was part of much stronger SA teams than the England teams Anderson was/is part of. Anderson's detractors (not saying you are one) make it all sound so simple. All you have to do is roll teams over on green ones in England with minimal effort and be semi-competent away from home to build a career as an England quick. If that was the case Woakes and Finn (no disrespect) would have 300+ and 400+ test wickets each. If you were picking a dream test 11 at the minute for any conditions, the question would be who is your third seamer to go with Anderson and Cummins.

Kimber you have scarred me for life with that pic of Anderson, Broad and Cook holding bats naked. 😂 Wth were they thinking! But I agree, Anderson is so underrated, he should have been a NZ player. Edit: James Anderson on posing naked for a magazine: "if there are any gay cricketers they should feel confident enough to come out because I don't think there is any homophobia in cricket." All jokes aside, what a wonderful man, kudos to him!

@@JarrodKimberYT I agree with ur few other videos but this tour Broad and Jimmy didn't do much tbh. When they play in England they do miracles. They are game changing bowlers but neither this time nor earlier in India they didn't do much whether u agree or not. Of course the track wasn't best for Pacers yet I expect broad n Jimmy to take some wickets Bumrah is no where close to Jimmy and Broad they are way more experienced. You know how bad wicket played after 1 st innings in 1st Test Eng has failed to cross 200 after that. If there wasn't much in track why didn't Eng score more in 2nd innings? You crediting first test to Jimmy but u didn't see how wicket exploded after 2 days but India played pretty well Eng didn't they made hay when wicket was rubber.

Cook, Strauss, Trott, KP, Bell, Prior, Stokes, Root? I mean they got to number one with a top quality batting line up, and even now when their top order is failing, they still regularly have the deepest batting line ups around. Not sure many countries out there are dropping Bairstow for instance.

@@JarrodKimberYT how long were we number 1 for? Not very long by the time we got whitewhashed in the ashes 13-14 most of them batsman were gone. The batting is deep because we don't have top class top and middle order batsman so they stuff as many all rounders in as they can. Stokes is exceptional and root looks back to his best but the batting has been inconsistent to say the least for a long time
