Yes, James Best said he lied about being able to play but did own two guitars. I still like Best. Good actor. Liked him on Twilight Zone too.

Hey Bob, We mentioned James Best a while ago. I have been playing guitar for about 50 years and I noticed he had no idea about cord structure or how to fake playing a lead on the guitar, However it was James Best and the Andy Griffith show that prompted me to learn the guitar because I liked the character that he played on the show and I thought if I could play like that , I would be really Cool !

Thing is, if we could play like Barney Kessel, we would be doing great! Elvis was my inspiration, but then I went to bass, because guitar players are a dime a dozen but bass players here are scarce. It got me lots of gigs..one band for 17 years

Even had he played they would have recorded it before hand and he would have faked it to his own playing. The darlings never played on the show, the dillards pre-recorded all of the music for the show and they lipsinced it

Dear Bob, Funfact: My old drama teacher Wynn Pearce lied about playing the guitar when he auditioned for No time for Sergeants in NY in the 1950's that starred Andy Griffith. He got the part but had a friend give him a quick lesson on the guitar before rehearsal. He passed and stayed in the play.

Hi Uncle Bob, This is one of your best episodes. I love the Wrecking Crew. Totally uncool-looking people (a bunch of "Cyranos") whose appearance betrays their talent. Carol Kaye has always been one of my heroes. I can't play the bass like my Uncle Bob does so well "wickedly" 😎but I did get to hold a Hofner and was briefly in Heaven. Have a heavenly Sunday UB. Thanks for being here, especially in these times.

It's a shame that you have to look like a model to make it, when normal musicians (who play much better then those that made it) are either in the background or are weekend warriors

@@theandygriffithshowfactsan3585 Regular-looking people who reveal their musical talents are actually seen as more attractive...Some study found that women love men who play music...because a man who has the time for "art" must be very good at acquiring the basic necessities of staying alive (getting food and shelter) and so are seen as better mates (from the women's point of view) 😎Rock on!

Hey uncle Bob, I started picking guitar around ‘68 or ‘69 after discovering a Chet Atkins album on my mom’s dresser. Been going at it ever since. I got pretty trained ears, so I quickly saw the discrepancy you mentioned! Plus if you listen closely, you hear drums playing too! That’s pretty good talent, to make an acoustic sound like an electric PLUS make it sound like drums! Even Chet couldn’t do that! But it was fun! So the close-ups were actually of Barney Kessel’s hands?

It's obvious that James Best wasn't doing his own playing. Watch the closeups. Someone sure had hairy arms. How many families own pianos as status symbols? Yet no one knows how to play it. When folks fake playing, you wonder if they ever go to the effort of miming the actual chords. A biography of Buck Owens said that the music was pre-recorded on Hee Haw. They air strummed on camera. The Wrecking Crew was a very talented group of musicians. Carole Kaye took issue with that name. She claimed Hal Blaine came up with it. Some of those folks, such as Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, and Larry Knetchel, had careers of their own. It's sad the Monkees got so much flax over using those folks. This bunch played for many other groups in LA. James Best must have done something right. He got to come back for another episode. Unfortunately, success had spoiled Jim Lindsey. How come Bobby Fleet got recast? Was the original actor unavailable? Or did TPTB want a more serious touch? Perhaps Freddy was his brother. Bing Crosby's brother Bob was a bandleader.

@daleschroeder5582 that's not accurate. Eddie was already in the band that would become Van Halen when Gene saw them perform. In fact Gene signed them and wanted to call them Daddy Longlegs. When Van Halen got an offer from another record label Gene tore up the contract.
