I lost my Father three weeks ago. I just got this album and didn't know anything about this song. On my lunch break this song came on and I had to stop driving and pulled to the side of the road and cried my eyes out. No song in my life hit me as hard as this one has ever done. Thank you James for sharing your pain and helping me get through mine.

Actually quite funny you said this. When my mum was dying, I related to no bravery so much. I know what the song is about but the fact JB was relating his seeing a broken human with no fight left in them, was exactly what I was seeing in my strong mother, and it resonated with me so much, sit her fight was vastly different x

This explains the development of my relationship with my dear dad. He’s still with me and I count everyday a blessing. I moved from two states away to be near him and my momma. I commute back and forth for work each week. My dear king wife makes it all work and we will one day be back taking care of her parents who are a decade plus younger than mine but the sacrifices now are so small compared to this time with them.

I lost my father June 17th me and my brother and my grandmother held his hand and he held our and as they took of the bi pap that was keeping him alive I played this song on my phone as loud as it would go and I help his hand until his heart had not another beat and the second his heart stopped was when this song ended. He heard every word and we lived this song. Idk your story but I sure am thankful your on this planet James Blount. There’s not a more perfect voice for a more perfect song that tells the story of me and my fathers last two years together. I was so very blessed to be able to be with my father 24/7 for the hardest fight he ever had to fight. We didn’t become close more understand each other the first 34 years but on June 17th we knew everything and understood each other and loved each other and the first promise I ever kept to him was full-filled in that I told him the day I moved into his home that from that day he would never have to worry about someone not being his everything becouse I wouldn’t leave his side no matter how long he stayed in a hospital or a rehab center or if he chose not to that I’d be right beside him every single day. And I was. And it ended with me being able to play this song he had never heard before. I was proud just as I was lost and crushed. So thank you truly

This song healed me ! My Father passed 40 yrs ago, from cancer. I was with him, as well as his Mom, his wife, for that last week of his life. I wrote down the words he spake during his last week and wrote a song using those words. Great song BTW! But now, 40 yrs later I hear your song....and I went into grieving anew.....after a couple days I realized my grieving was for my Father's passing 40 yrs ago.....and your song ushered in my grieving that was sorely overdue.......And now, I can still Love my Father, and miss Him; but the grieving is fulfilled. Thank You James Blunt ! You helped me heal from something I didn't know I needed to be healed for. Finally, I have a peace I haven't felt my whole life. Thank You.

I stopped speaking to my 70yr old father few years ago and he’s never met my daughter. I’ve done right in life and he forever sees me as a failure if I don’t always bend the knee to him and do as he says with my own life I earned. He gives me nothing and all I ask for is a grandfather. He refuses and puts himself, his land and 3rd wife above all 6 of his Kids and 12 grandkids. This songs for you Dad. Ive played piano for 20yrs and he’s never heard my fingers fall. I’m going to learn it on piano for you Dad. Goodbye.

I knelt by the bed where my father later died that night, his emaciated body torn with the pain of 4th stage lung cancer, his tossing and turning fed by massive doses from a morphine drip set up by hospice in his last house. "Mary is here," his third wife told him and he thrashed to see me, reached for my hand. I cried and said, "God, please just take him." And God did. This song....this song....thank you.

My dad died suddenly from a cardiac arrest while he was out and about one day. He died alone with no family beside him. I was countries away and the last time I saw him was 3 yrs ago before Covid hit. I've only recently discovered this song, and to say that this hit me like a truck is a massive understatement. It wrecks me and heals me every time I hear it. I wish I could've given him comfort during his last hours. I am a Daddy's girl through and through and I will carry this regret in my heart until the day I see him again. RIP, Daddy. You are sorely missed.

My dad passed away October last year. Leukemia took him. The doctors found out about it just a week before that. It was too fast. I was in the States back in the time, trying to make it home to Thailand when I knew that they took him in the ICU, but I couldn't make it back in time. The only thing I could do was clutching the phone in my hand, saying goodbye to him on FaceTime. This song gave me a good cry. I miss him so much.

My husband and I heard this song about 3 1/2 weeks before he died. Our nephew sang it for us. All my kids were there. He sang it because he said it fit my family. We have 3 boys and a daughter that loved the dad with all their heart and 7 grandchildren that worshipped the ground their papa walked on. Music always filled our home, when my husband stopped playing guitar, it broke our hearts even more. But the day our nephew played that song for us, my husband played for the last time before he closed his eyes and went to sleep as your song says. I seen it in your eyes, the hurt of loosing someone so dear. Thank you for your words that so many out here so totally understand. It's songs like this, even when we are hurting makes us appreciate understanding and love from each other in the family's and friends that life us up. Keep writing and keep singing. In an era where the majority of music lyrics lack any real substance this song stands alone. It's so moving, I've been trying to listen to it and sing along for 3 days, without success. Every time I choke up. Enjoy each moment with your loved ones, that time is precious. You can never get enough, and will always wish you had more when they're gone.

Monsters Song by James Blunt Oh, before they turn off all the lights I won't read you your wrongs or your rights The time has gone I'll tell you goodnight, close the door Tell you I love you once more The time has gone So here it is I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine And while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proud So daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid, it's my turn to chase the monsters away Oh, well I'll read a story to you Only difference is this one is true The time has gone I folded your clothes on the chair I hope you sleep well, don't be scared The time has gone So here it is I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine And while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proud So daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid, it's my turn to chase the monsters away Sleep a lifetime Yes and breathe a last word You can feel my hand on your own I will be the last one So I'll leave a light on Let there be no darkness in your heart But I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine And while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proud So daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid, it's my turn to chase the monsters away Songwriters: Jimmy Hogarth, James Blunt, Amy Victoria Wadge. For non-commercial use only.

I didn't either, both from my biological father and later from my stepfather, both abusive... Now I have my own children - one of which with severe mental illness - and am given the opportunity and privilege to do it right by them. Trust Jesus to help me in the journey. Sorry to read that, like me, you didn't have the father you needed. May God bless you. Hope you are well... Greetings from Brazil

This song was released on the day prior to when my dad passed. My wife sent me a link to the song coincidentally the very night before my father died while I was trying to comfort him during his final ours asking that he close his eyes and not be afraid. As if sent to me from the heavens, this song was perfect, capturing exactly what I was feeling and trying to convey to my father as he lay in fear knowing it was his final night. Dad lasted into the morning long enough for his family to gather. My sister, mom and I watched my father take his last breath as the life left him shortly after playing this song for him. I've listened to this song a hundred times since that night/day. I've found my comfort in it. Thank you.

*I held my father's hand as he died. All the turmoil, and differences melted away as his shallow whispers gently faded. This song has inspired me to create something beautiful on piano, something that flows naturally and is something I hope he might hear. From the heart is the best that I can do. I don't play well, don't read music, and don't have a good keyboard, but I will give it every bit I have. Thank you for letting us hear your heart James.*
