Agent Under Fire character models and their The World is Not Enough counterparts: Adrian Malprave - Elektra King Nigel Bloch - Renard Carla the Jackal - Cigar Girl Zoe Nightshade - Christmas Jones Also note that the henchman carrying the case of vials in the beginning cinematic of ‘Trouble in Paradise’ is the Swiss banker Lachaise from TWINE. The embassy levels seem to use a lot of old TWINE assets from what would’ve been either the Bilbao intro or the MI6 office, while the streets of Bucharest and Hong Kong seem to do the same for London (‘Thames Chase’) and Istanbul (‘Turncoat’). The Cyclops Oil Platform reuses assets that would have originally been Zukovsky’s Caviar Factory, and ‘Forbidden Depths’ could have totally been an on-rails segment for the King Pipeline. ‘Poseidon’ could very well have been King’s submarine dock enclosure in Istanbul, Malprave’s alpine assets for a skiing segment, the underground bits of her HQ being used for the silo level.... While I never was a massive Agent Under Fire fan (I was a Nightfire girl :P ), you review has made me appreciate the game in a whole new way. =) Awesome review, Calvin - well done!

Fun fact: the licence plate on Zoe's green car is the same plate (and indeed car) as on Bond's BMW in Tomorrow Never Dies. This is my favourite Bond game by some margin. The mix of action, driving, stealth and rail sections is amazing, the Bond theme made for the game is one of the best, the story is a perfect blend of GoldenEye-esque intrigue and Moore-esque entertainment and the multiplayer mode with low gravity and gadgets is still hilarious after a night of drinks with some friends. Fantastic review Calvin, I really hope the new 007 game will be in the same spirit as this.

“Private quarter pounders” This will never be forgotten. Probably the most fun review you’ve had to date! This game introduced me to good ol’ 007 and is the reason I went on to play Goldeneye and Nightfire at a very young age. Those three are the reason I went on to rent Tomorrow never dies and the World is not enough those same years and their most definitely the reason I’m such a huge Bond fan today. While nowadays From Russia with love is my favorite Bond game I still hold this one close as a super fun adventure I revisit every now and then, yes Nightfire and many other may be above it but it’s still a nice near Gold adventure itself

It's amazing what you can find by digging around the files or just knowing a thing or two. Prepare yourself for real nerd stuff about Agent Under Fire. Night of the Jackal features a leftover model. The civilian in the blue shirt and white pants isn't just a nod, his model uses TWINE Bond's model with the bulkier proportions. His texture file is different from other models and part of his hair was lifted from the Brosnan hair texture. The Lotus Esprit was originally meant to be a 750iL. If you read the instruction manual, the 750iL is still mentioned there with a description that makes it seem like the perfect stats car like the Lotus. This was not corrected in the GameCube or Xbox releases. If you're wondering why Poseidon has armor at the start, it's because they cut an entire Section 1 before it! All three sections of Poseidon was originally one map internally known as _uwb_2_ that would've been Section 2. It got split up into "uwb_2a," "uwb_2aa," and "uwb_2b." Also the submarine featured in Section 3 is straight up lifted from TWINE PC with a couple of texture changes. Clone Bond was in fact a thing at one point. You can look up concept art of Evil Summit featuring him and a different ending with the Union Jack parachute and Malprave surviving. His removal was pretty late as there is still data you can find inside the map file. And that's not all, after that originally you were meant to fight Clone Bloch instead of the original Bloch. If you play the Spanish or French versions, they did not update the dialogue so Malprave says "So you don't die alone, I created a new Nigel Bloch. He's eager to meet you. Goodbye, Mr. Bond!" Abbey reuses window textures from Night Watch from TWINE. Same thing with some beams which were from Turncoat. Tuxedo Bond is still in the game. But his tuxedo lacks textures. I'm still the only person who's uploaded this (albeit in a gag video) ;) The game originally did have the gunbarrel blood when you died and blood when you wounded someone. Who knows why the former got cut but the latter wasn't approved of because it was considered "gory."

I've played this game since I was very young and I didn't even know half the stuff mentioned in this one comment. Very very good research sir. One thing I also found out (it could be false) Bella and Bebe were going to be featured more prominently in the game and would have been a boss fight at the end of Poseidon or Forbidden Depths.

It was cool to, years after first playing this game's campaign, finding out how many well-hidden easter eggs and cool secrets are in this game! You mentioned the laser sharks, the unlockable Lotus Esprit and the TWINE pipeline kart, which are all cool. But my favorites are probably the triple health _Dev's cache_ hidden in the beginning of Fire and Water, as well as the _hidden CH-6 rocket launcher_ in Forbidden Depths found by shooting out station monitors! And for more fun with the excellent multiplayer in this game, there's a weapon rebalancing and QOL changing mod released last year called *Agent Under Fire Reloaded,* which I can personally recommend as a great time!

Sometimes I do wish there was some bonus levels where you play as Zoe Nightshade between her initial cloning and her getting to the submarine. That would've been a cool way to flesh out the plot a little and I always like the concept of playing as the Bond Girl. If only it had more dev time. That said, AUF is one of my favorite Bond games. It's so ridiculously silly sometimes but I think that's part of its charm. The multiplayer being treated as an in-universe super-level is also fun. This is one of the few games where I have lots of fun rocket (and photon) jumping.

I do like some elements more than Nightfire and EON, lemme explain: GE had a bit of an immersive sim quality to it- Bond felt like a physical body moving, running too much hurt your aim, dropped into sandboxy levels where you could choose how you did everything. Using gadgets was more like using items vs just pressing a button and watching Bond do the action. GE's subtle immersive aspects are what keeps it my favorite Bond game to this day. AUF replicates this more than any later Bond games. Bond feels heavier, there's headbob, the animations of the guns look a bit more physical. Gadget contexts are sprayed all throughout each level and you use them as your tools to help. It even has consequences for your choices that change the game heavily vs just being another route to take. Front door on the first mission doesn't just give you away but hints at the villain while keeping you from getting the armory key. Hiding behind the boxes as the guards guards by is another great touch. Failing to get the verification code makes you start the ship level in a different spot. It's another super immersive Bond game. Nightfire is fantastic, I have no complaints about it, it's objectively more well made in many ways, but for me it lacks that immersion. Gadgets are way more contextual, especially the grapple. The different routes all feel more linear, like you're being funneled through tunnel A vs tunnel B. The control is so tight that controlling Bond feels more robotic and "video gamey". It does have those elements but mostly only in the first real mission The Exchange. Wanna stress I'm not hating on Nightfire, i love all the Bond games, but AUF has those quirks that make me personally enjoy it a bit more. It follows GE in some of those subtleties, and feels like a true expansion of it (other than Perfect Dark, the true GE sequel). Those little immersive sim-esque qualities go a long way for me. Then the multiplayer. Maps aren't as good as Nightfire but the gadgets make it the most underrated Bond multiplayer. Grappling on any surface, proton guns, jetpacks, gravity boots, it's all just pure energetic fun. It's more barebones but the simplicity adds to its fun factor. Just load up bots, have a friend over, and you'll just have pure fun (not to use that word so much). Nightfire's lack of gadgets for mp was dissapointing but it's still hectic fun with better maps for sure. Overall another great review, Calvin. It's great to see the Bond games dissected in such detail.
@jc715011 ай бұрын
That's really a good point about it's immersive sim qualities. I've been replaying Agent Under Fire and there are definitely some Deus Ex moments like "should I use my laser to break this vent lock and sneak in this office or go in guns blazing?"
@stevenstone307 Жыл бұрын
2nd comment after watching this whole thing, cheers for the Sunday entertainment! I really love this game. You're totally right, it's so unpolished. Nightfire is far more polished, but I think this game is still so worth playing. Fire and Water is actually my personal favourite. As a kid it was so difficult for me, and my older brother! I have a distinct memory, one of those random memories you have as a kid that still seem so clear so many years later. We were discussing our plan for Fire and Water after school, as we'd been stuck on it for ages. I remember one time we actually beat it, and then got stuck on one of the later levels. We never completed it as kids, so it was fairly challenging! Did you know that at the start of Fire and Water, if you jump onto those big barrels in front on you, on the little valves that stick out of them, you get given a sniper rifle?? I found that out as a kid by accident, trying to see if I could escape the map haha. Multiplayer was such a blast. I did 4 player with it once with friends that stayed over and we had so much fun, the Q Claw being the most fun thing out of it all. I have the same opinions about the maps as you do too! Forbidden Depths has such a great soundtrack, I still listen to it on youtube from time to time. And yes, I'm so glad to see someone else complain about the night vision part of Streets of Bucharest haha. I remember that jump at the end of the driving section being tricky as a kid. And I totally explored the 3rd mission map as well! I can't believe how much detail went into it for a mission that ends in like 1 minute. The pistol you start with is mega busted. You can do all the missions on 00 Agent just using it, and you should to be honest for the highest scores, you can easily end up with 100% accuracy rating with just headshots. How did the other Zoe know about the other Zoe? Why was she immediately getting it on with James?! They just met! Maybe its just James Bond lol. For the longest time I thought Judy Dench voiced M, the likeness is perfect. I really don't understand the problem some people have with this original Bond model, I think he looks great. You're very right that this isn't quite a cinematic bond game though, it feels very much like a early 2000s PS2 action game with James Bond flavouring. I never realised how much was taken from TWINE! Also a funny side note, this games plot really captured my imagination as a kid. I was always a sciency type kid and having this game be all about cloning, and running through all these bioengineer levels, I actually really loved it and it make me study on those topics. I didn't go down that path but it was just another thing I was really interested in as a kid and I have this game to thank for it. I have NEVER played this game with the Lotus! I'm going to do that right now. Cheers Calvin!

Been waiting for this video for awhile now as this game is the sole reason I bought a GameCube for my 14th birthday with all the money I’d gotten and had saved up beforehand. I’d gotten into Bond in a big way and played through the PS1 games, then the demo for Agent Under Fire (which was a large chunk of Night of the Jackal, as I recall) blew my mind. I played the heck out of the game, even when I got NightFire for Christmas mere weeks later. At the time, I came to prefer NightFire and Everything or Nothing to it (having barely gotten to play From Russia With Love due to only having it on a different console). Which is ironic because, having revisited and tracked the games back down again last year after watching your original videos (thanks, Calvin!), a part of me prefers this to NightFire. Yes, it lacks some of the polish and the more cinematic Bond elements. But replaying the two games, this was the one that felt more fun. Especially in the driving levels which, while short here, at least gave you the chance to use what gadgets you wanted! And as a shoot ‘em up with Bond elements, it retains a lot of its charm. As for the story, I’ve seen this game described as a Roger Moore era plot with Brosnan aesthetics and, given the humor and characterization of the game’s Bond especially, I can’t disagree with that. Perhaps that’s why the game works so well? A part of me would like to step into the parallel universe where we got a version of the game with Moore reprising the role, which seems like it would have been a hoot and a nice counterpart to the From Russia With Love game with Connery we got a few more years down the road. As it stands, it’s a fun Bond sidestep. All that being said, I still prefer the third person games like Everything or Nothing and especially From Russia With Love. All games I wouldn’t have revisited for the first time in a dozen years (at least!) if it hadn’t been for your videos. So thank you for inspiring some re-visitations and reconsideration after all these years!

Thanks for sharing this, Matthew! And I'm very pleased to hear you've enjoyed revisiting these Bond games. EA were onto a beautiful thing in the first half of the 00's and I really do long for those days now that we go so long without any Bond games at all... Anyway, thanks again!

Nightfire did fail on certain aspects in the multiplayer. No jetpack, no hook that can latch onto any surface, no special power ups and a few maps like that dock map would have been a nice inclusion. My only nitpick is Malprave/her clone henchwomen basically being an afterthought throughout the whole game

The thing about this game being one of the best selling titles on the PS2, isn't because of the fact it was a good game that went under appreciated at the time... It was because it was the most easiest game to run softmod exploits for. PS2, Xbox, look for any softmod methods and Agent Under Fire is going to almost ALWAYS be one of them. Its still a good game tho!

This game was my first introduction to James Bond. A relative came to visit during my break in primary school as it was my birthday and presented a gamecube copy to me...20 years later, i still have that copy and my love for it really hasn't changed (minus the flashing when you get hit cause epilepsy be damned)

Ah Q vision in the Tank level, an obscure memory I had forgotten. This video was fantastic, I loved this game as a kid and 4 player free-for-all with rocket boots and low gravity battles was the pinnacle of hosting sleep overs with my pals

I always loved playing around on Dangerous Pursuit. If you don't head to the objective area, it's practically a sandbox where you can freely drive around and fight the enemy vehicles that'll appear and chase you. If I remember correctly, you can have a bunch of enemies spawn and come after you if you hang around too long.

@1:02:00 it just dawned on my that the rig workers are dressed the same as the SPECTRE guards/workers in the oil rig from Diamonds Are Forever

I expect a 1 hour video for each level of the IO game when it finally releases lol. Fantastic video as always. The GC/XBOX/PS2 really felt like the peak of Bond games.

here in the US, Agent Under Fire was rated T for teen, so we could legally play it earlier than those across the pond!

While i have played Goldeneye and TWINE 64 growing up in the early 2000s. AUF was the first FPS i played on the PS2 and I did remember being really into it a lot as a kid back when. I was not aware of it mixed reception back when tbh until the internet became accessible later on. I did not get to enjoy the multiplayer very much sadly due to the PS2 version making it split screen only and i have no friends to play the game with me either. I did try the gamecube version with bots in 2005 though that was fun too. I think AUF might be a flaw game in some cases, it still a fun game for me when playing it. Since it offer some of the variety like the the on rails sections and driving sections too.

Wait, so does this mean that canonically in the CDCU (Calvin Dyson Cinematic Universe) that the Calvin we saw playing Agent Under Fire in the livestream was actually a clone and now since original Calvin was shot by the Golden Gun “replica” we’ll now have his clone making videos for this channel???

1:30:00 How is Bond holding on to the zipline? More than likely his sneaking suit comes equipped with a harness that he could attach to himself. Hooks and whatnot

AUF was actually my first PS2 game ever at a wee 5 years old, I still remember getting stuck on Fire and Water because I couldn't time jumping on the pistons even with the Q Jet, or the thrill of tearing thru the driving missions. It may not have the polish of what came later, or the iconic legacy of what came before, but for me, AUF is still such a defining game for me and my introduction into the world of James Bond. Also, the Photon Cannon in multiplayer was the actual best, probably my favorite weapon in the whole game save for the fully upgraded Gold P2K or the Frinesi shotgun. (or as I always called it the "Frenzy" shotgun)

I used to LOVE this game on the PS2 when I first played it back in 2004 to 2005! Then again - I was a 007 fan since I was nine (my first film incidentally being “Die Another Day” - and thus cementing Pierce Brosnan) as my favorite Bond! As such - I need to get a PS2 to play this again!
