Publisher Text:
“Bond, James Bond.” Since Sean Connery uttered those immortal words in Dr. No, the world’s most famous secret agent in the history of cinema has been charming and thrilling audiences worldwide. This fearless, peerless and impeccably British character, created in 1953 by Ian Fleming, has starred in twenty-five EON-produced films, played by six different actors over seven decades. And still the franchise continues.
To tell the full story of how it all began, EON Productions opened its archives of photos, designs, and production materials to TASCHEN. The result is this remarkable account of the making of Dr. No, Bond’s first film outing: a beautiful volume that includes a treasure trove of words and pictures, many of which have never been seen before.
Access to EON’s James Bond archives was completely unrestricted, so this book is the most comprehensive account of one of the most iconic films the world has ever seen. Step inside the pages to find the true inside story and outstanding insights into the personalities and processes behind the most successful and longest-running film franchise in cinema history.
You can closely follow the making of the film through a day-by-day account of what took place, which scenes were shot and who made the decisions that shaped the story and characters as it was filmed. Among the 1007 images, you’ll see many rare and previously unpublished stills and on-set shots from photographers such as Bert Cann, Bunny Yaeger and Bradley Smith, as well as memos, documents, posters, and production designs.
And the behind-the-scenes stories paint their own pictures too, told by the people who were there. From producers Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to director Terence Young and production designer Ken Adam, as well as the cast, the crew, writers and stuntmen, these personal narratives invite readers back in time and on to the film set itself.
For any fan, it’s a fantastic insight into how the Bond cinematic world was born - and its comprehensive coverage of the filming experience which will grip you from the first page.
Available in 3 limited editions:
1-250: taschen.com/en...
Art Edition (No. 1-250), with the framed ChromaLuxe print Bond, James Bond, 1962 by Bert Cann. As James Bond (Sean Connery) deals a card to Sylvia Trench, he says: “It looks like you are out to get me.” “It’s an idea at that,” she replies. This set photo was taken on March 5, 1962.
251-500: taschen.com/en...
Art Edition (No. 251-500), with the framed ChromaLuxe print Publicity Portrait, 1962 by Bert Cann. Ian Fleming described James Bond as a blunt instrument wielded by a Government Department, which is epitomised in this studio portrait of Sean Connery taken on April 5, 1962.

❤ I was a 10 year old intern at school when they showed Dr. No at the end of the year, and the world seemed suddenly turn from black and white to color... The year was 1964 and the place was Jounieh, a coastal town of Lebanon. Later, when every Bond movie came out in Beirut downtown, classes where empty in the afternoon 😅😅😊 ....❤from Montreal

Having finished reading this beautiful book,I can definitely see there is a difference in the book quality between this and the James Bond Archives Trade Edition. The Trade Edition is a quality publication,but on the Dr No book the paper is thicker,has a glossy white look to it,the images have a better clarity too. The same images in both books have a different look. It's quite interesting comparing the two publications side by side. I do think that both books should stand up to being read time and time again. The "printed in Italy" is definitely evident... even the slipcase is beautifully manufactured. The 007 and Honey Ryder print is nicely done, applied too. You get what you pay for in this luxury book,if I can call it that!

Fantastic book Paul. You and Taschen really do out do yourselves with each new project. I have many of your books (Star Wars IV, V, VI, Star Wars I,II,III, Walt Disney Archives, The Making of 2001: A Space Odyssey etc). These extensive behind the scenes books of classic history making movies are just what gets me excited. The only question I have is, if all of this raw material has been available all these years why has no one else written and published what is an important cultural account?

Sorry, another comment from me.. .Someone on set would have been keeping a diary of each day of filming...that is what makes this such a fascinating read! You are a fly on the wall each day of filming... brilliant! I can understand why Taschen is charging what they are for this book -paying a premium to get access to that previously unpublished material/documents in a quality,XXL format!

@@wordsmithpd I would absolutely adore “day by day” books on all of the Bond movies. I certainly couldn’t afford extravagant Tashcen editions for all of them, but I would buy mass-market versions for every single film. Please do whatever you can to make it happen!

Paul, would you say that the quality of this book is a notch better than for example the James Bond Archives Trade Edition? That's still a good quality publication, but obviously it's been produced on a smaller budget than the Dr No Special Edition ti keep prices down. Paper quality etc. I notice that the Trade Edition is printed in China whereas this Special Edition is printed in Italy.
@wordsmithpd
@wordsmithpd 4 ай бұрын
The XXL and Collector Editions by TASCHEN are printed and bound in Italy, and use better quality paper, binding, and other materials/processes. For example, each image usually has a spot varnish, so that it "pops." The Trade Editions are smaller, and use cheaper paper/materials, and are printed in China. This is not to say that they are badly printed, just that they do not have all the extras.

The dress suit Connery wears at the casino, and at M's office is by Benson, Perry and Whitley. EON asked me to confirm it. I found documentation on this, and it is in the book.
