He ticked all of the boxes. He looked the part and was utterly believable as a professional spy. He was smart, aware, questioning, intense, moody, had little faith in the competence of others (his early exchanges with Saunders) and very human; all very much how Fleming detailed the character. Aside from the attache case in From Russia with Love, Bond never relied on gadgets; more so his own resourcefulness. This was one of the few things that let Dalton's Bond films down imo - he was the perfect actor to show Bond getting out of scrape without the assistance of gadgets.

@@LexingtonDeville984 The first drafts are always wildly different though. If Dalton had stayed in the role, the screenplay would have changed a lot from that anyway. Though it would still have been different to what we got with Brosnan. I'm torn on it, because while I'd have loved to have had Dalton in the Goldeneye that did happen, it wouldn't have happened the same if he were in it. Goldeneye and Licence to Kill are my two absolute favourite Bond movies of all time. If anything were to have been different, I'd rather Dalton had started in the role 1 or even 2 movies earlier instead of that later tat they made with Moore.

Dalton is the most underrated Bond ever. He read the Fleming novels to get into character, didn’t want to copy what Roger Moore had done, turned down the role twice because he was too young the first time, and turned in two of the most underrated Bond films in the series. For me, he’s my #2 Bond behind Connery. Were it not for all the lawsuits and legal issues in the early 90’s, he would of done at least two more before handing over the reigns to Brosnan. Imagine an alternate universe where Connery gets the novel version of Moonraker as his final outing, Lazenby gets a revenge trilogy, Moore has Octopussy as his swansong in 1981 and Dalton gets the role from 1983 onwards with a legacy of For Your Eyes Only, View to a Kill, Living Daylights, Licence to Kill, and Property of a Lady/Risico. Brosnan would get GoldenEye and everyone would be happy.

@Slave2PaperWithInkOn Agreed on FYEO and AVTAK but although I would love to have seen his OHMSS, he was only 22/23 when it was made/ released, and in those days he looked very young (The lion in winter, Wuthering Heights) wheras Bond was a mature man, so I think he was right to ask not to be considered. Better would have been around 1983 (Jane Eyre) or even as early as 1975 (Permission to kill). As the first writer says, in another universe...

When I was a kid they would show old Bond movies on TV, and I was hooked when I saw Sean Connery's films. A few years later a large newspaper had a running campaign where you got a DVD of one Bond movie with a copy of their newspaper, one movie per week and it was in order from first to last (Die Another Day at the time). I picked up all the movies with Connery, a couple with Roger Moore and then it got to Timothy Dalton. I had never seen them and assumed that he must've not have been a good Bond actor when my dad told me he was only in two films. I bought the first movie anyway, and holy sh*t! I was blown away by how great he was as a Bond! I bought the second one and it was just as good. I couldn't believe that there was another Bond that was on Sean Connery's level, AND HE ONLY MADE TWO MOVIES!

Wouldn't say he was "robbed". It was just how the situation was. He was all set for a third Bond film when the whole legal disputes happened. After they ended(all the way in 1994) he was sort of over the role. He was ready to come back for one more time but Albert Broccoli said that he's gotta come back for more than just one film. He respectfully declined. I think he had a good run, regardless. Set the staple for what would go on to become Daniel Craig's Bond.

But as much as we wanted Dalton to have his 3rd bond film, it is better to leave us wanting more than outstaying his welcome. You know the thing with that is after three films I feel the quality only goes downhill. I feel Sean Connery's first three films were brilliant, but it was all downhill after that, with Diamons Are Forever I think being his worst film. Similar story with Roger Moore. His first three films were his best, and it went downhill afterwards, with A View To A Kill being one of the worst Bond films. Same thing with Pierce Brosnan. Even his films were not that good, but Die Another Day was another low point for the series. Daniel Craig same things. Casino Royale and Skyfall are brilliant films, but after that I think they were getting unbearable. Blowfeld as Bond's long lost brother. Who the hell wrote that? Timothy Dalton did two phenominal films and I would have liked him to do one more, but I'm glad he did do so many like the others. Some of the films became unbearable.

To me Timothy Dalton is the definitive James Bond, not only is he the most accurate to the books but he was a true fan and was an advocate for keeping Fleming’s vision for the character intact, and he also had a perfect balance of the seriousness and dark humour needed for the role.

Dalton was by far the best bond. He even looked the part from head to toe. He played it as close to the books as possible. Bond was written as a tortured, reluctant killer. Calm and collected under pressure and silently aware of his unique abilities.

With your name it's weird because l sadly lost my Dad two days ago with dementia and ongoing health issues. Bond is always been around in my childhood in the 70's. Then back in 1992 i decided to buy all vhs tapes of Bond.(including never say never) and sheduled them on a Monday night when l finished work from Sept through to Dec. Enjoy everyone and when timothy dalton's time arrived it was like a new era. Gritty, (Then) modern, Fresh and now. Then by next week it was all over. What a pity he didn't see out his contract on screen. Because he WAS the current James Bond.

Oh yeah, now THAT is a proper Tribute that Timothy Dalton deserves. He gave us two absolutely outstanding performances and i am happy for him that he was always being able to play different roles and really be a chameleon of an actor. He definitely was an amazing Bond and the initial Audience response showed they were just not ready yet for a more serious and realistic 007. The Dalton Bonds definitely brought the Bond Movies into the proper direction by making it less silly and making the world Bond lives in feel a lot more dangerous. And even till this day it is HIM who i always see first when someone mentions James Bond anywhere. He was definitely My Bond and still is.

Timothy Dalton is one of the if not the most underrated Bond of them all ~ both of their Bonds movies were superb as his stone cold acting (as true Fleming's British spy from his novels) 😎🔫 I'm just sorry that he didn't get chance to play in more movies from that amazing franchise (maybe he could step in Bond's shoes a bit earlier (in the later Moore era) 😉

If you think about it, Timothy Dalton as Bond had almost the exact look of Ian Flemming’s description of Bond in his novels, he was almost exactly what Fleming imagined Bond to look like, therefore Dalton was one of the best Bonds

My absolute favourite Bond actor. I'm so glad I found many like minded people through this video and the comment section. You guys are the best! Timothy Dalton's darker and more serious interpretation has been my favourite ever since I first saw him in a bond film. I grew up with the Brosnan Bonds and now of course with the five Daniel Craig films (born in '86) but I really just like Dalton the best. For me, he also has that perfect bond look. Suave, focused, dangerous and hyper intelligent. Simply the full package, if you ask me.

Timothy Dalton is criminally underrated as Bond. While I’ve never “hated” any interpretation of Bond, so many of the films portray Bond as a superhero of sorts. Dalton changed that. He played Bond as a government agent killer. Period. End of story. Yes, he is also charming, full of whit and dry humor as one would expect from Bond, but Dalton made you BELIEVE that he was fully capable of snapping your neck or shooting you in the head without a seconds hesitation. Dalton’s performance in both of his films made Bond a man who was real and someone who the audience could genuinely believe was who he said he was. It’s such a shame that he was simply 20 years too early, as film audiences at the time very much saw Bond as a stereotype by that point that had to say and do things in a certain way and Dalton simply didn’t bow to that audience. Daniel Craig is my personal favorite Bond, but Timothy Dalton blazed a path for Craig to follow and is a very, VERY close second.
